It is not always possible to check for obstacles/shallow water, esp. if the water is only accessible by a jump. Think about it mate, presumably the people who have died/been very badly hurt would not have done it if they knew what would happen, so whether or not people think they're going to be safe is irrelevant. Yes, I can see how it can be a rush, but would you want to put you and your family through agony if it went wrong, which they so often do?
If you dont know how deep it is- dont jump. simple. Build up the height gradually as you get better at the hobby/sport and you should enter the water correctly. I hate demonising of theis simple jumping into water as 'tombstoning' really disrespectful and shows that the media just love a good warning story.
