  • Just wondering, What Tileset are you using?

  • Oh man i love thisgame but at first i didnt know how to play.I started to figure out myself and it takes one month.I learn nothing. Then i started to watch you videos and now i know how to play,Thank you.

  • @TheMinecraftBuilder1

    Make a refuse stockpile.

  • someone please tell me how to get rid of dead animals? there is a animal stinking my fort :/

  • ledgend ive been stuck 4 ages and my fortress got boat murdered, this vid stoped this for happening thx :) !!

  • How do i dig out rough-shale walls & smoothed pillers/walls? The dwarfs are not following my designations when i ask them to mine it.

  • Isn't there the risk of cave monsters, and the "hidden fun stuff?"

  • @TheKatamariguy yeah. you definitely don't wanna encounter the "hidden fun stuff".

  • 'Designation cancelled, Damp stone located.' WHAT DO I DO?

  • @1190lewis I had this apparently theres a risk of water being nearby but I got this several times in he same room, I guess you should look for any danger.

  • How the heck do you save in this game?! I played for 5 hours and was doing fine when 8 had to leave and then when I came back there wasn't an option for loading up my previous game even though I clicked save? Where is the save file located at in the windows legacy zip file??

  • Errr... my fort only has stone everywhere. Ive tried finding new spots on the world but simply CANNOT find anywhere that has 'underground' soil for farms. Was this changed in subsequent versions? Cos basically this doesnt help anyone to actually start farming. I cant make farms, and so i starve to death. And ive no idea how to actually MOVE soil inside or anything. Any ideas? Maybe if you built the fort somewhere relevent to 99% of the world...

  • @PsycholexUber

did you use the find tool? Or have you tried generating a new world? I went through five before I was happy with the one I got. The bigger it is, the more chance you've got of finding a good site. I used advanced world generation, only parameter I changed was a higher value for Embark Points. After picking a site I opted for Prepare Carefully, adding more food and drink to start with. Makes it easier to get to know the game, not having to worry about farming right away.

  • I dont have soil 'inside' my mountain. How can i replace the stone floor with dirt? Sort of makes doing farms impossible inside :/

  • @PsycholexUber irrigation

  • 00:32 What do the Dist and Num stand for? I get that num means number, but what number is that?

  • you had put "purple" not Plump.

  • Je videos zijn goed, maar doe iets aan je accent. (niet lullig bedoeld, diep respect hoor, maar het klinkt afschuwelijk)

  • Is crop-rotation a factor in this game? Because if it is, it wouldn't be the best idea to plant plump helmets year round.

  • @Xemptuous It aint ;)

  • Great. great tutorials dude! You explain it very carefully and slowly and the texts help as well.

I'm very excited to play the game now.

  • I forgot. I still mix up the names sometimes so could be unintentional :)

  • on 5:23 you said purple helmets in the text, don't you mean plump helmets? or did you type that on purpose?

  • @42f87d89

You can get some "texture" packs around the nwt to make it more understandable.

  • i got my farm set but when i go to plant the seeds it says there are no seeds aviable. now when i go to food stockpile i find them in a barrel, why wont it allow me to plant them?

  • Dutch?

  • looks amazing... too bad i cant ever play it because when i open the dwarffortress.exe it says couldnt locate fmod.dll and doesnt let me play... i have no idea what to do and is feeling hopeless...

  • where do i get the better images? mine is only ASCII characters

  • I set my carpender to make beds but I dont know where they are!

  • could i make big rooms if i just left pillars of rocks? (then later engrave them or sumpin)

  • queer voice in my opinion listen to the way he says dwarf and other words it was a pain to watch this video

  • So complicated...I LOVE IT!

  • This game is horribly fascinating. But way too complicate. The hell if I'm gonna play it. I'll just watch you play it.

  • hey inside my fortress i have no soil ground anywhere and have nowhere to put a farm. any suggestions?

  • @OmegaOmotron You're playing the 2010 version probably, farms now need "mud" floors or something like that. You make that by watering the ground, just look at captnducks' 2010 vid tutorials, they explain how to farm in the 2010 version.

  • This game is shithard to get into. Good thing you make really good tutorials

  • When Dolomite sees a carp, he cuts the mutha fucka!

  • Like marbles . And no , they don't .

  • I learning a lot.

  • Purple helmets :D

  • thank you for this it helps alot (subbed) hope your still making vids

  • Also, could you tell me how to make mud real quick? I have an idea but I think it might result in flooding the whole fortress.

  • @OMGBEARS watch dfvidtuts2010 part 2 about farming.

  • @captnduck what are minmum requirments?

  • @spartons222 I dunno, google it.

  • @spartons222 not much tbh

  • @spartons222 Very, very low

  • @spartons222 To play the game? A bucket with wire inside. On really old computer the game might lag when generating terrain but other than that its fine.

  • @OMGBEARS the only way i can think of is if you build a tunnel to some water then make a floodgate attached to a lever open it up and let the area you want to be mud flood and then close it up again and wait for it to evaporate.

  • This tutorial has been very helpful thus far, and your sexy accent only makes it better!

  • how do i collect water? do i need a certain tool like a bucket?

  • @masterjamie9 If you want your dwarves to do the work then yeah, you need a lot of buckets. DFwiki pond for more info.

  • @masterjamie9 I suddenly witnessed my dwarfes running to the river at the edge of map, i was wondering whether theyre gonna drown themselves or desert me, but turned out they were just getting water :)

  • How do i get rid of downwards stairways?

  • @imantonater Some of the DFort forum vets recommend that you build a floor over downward stairs to "get rid" of them. That's what I did.

  • what do you do if you hit an underground lake while mining down

  • @captnduck You called Plump Helmets "Purple Helmets" by mistake at 5:10 in the subs.... little freudian slip there, eh? ;)

    BTW, awesome work.

  • Noooooo... I had an awesome fortress going up until now, well, it was all organized, and I took at least an hour to build it... Then I realized I forgot the seeds. Now I gotta restart. :P

  • skills arent required to do anything, any dwarf can be assigned to do anything, However, the skills determine their starting job preferences, which can be changed at pretty much anytime anyways. skills determine how effective any dwarf is at said skill.

  • You should mute the god damned music so we can actually hear you talk..... You already have a very hard to understand accent, and having music over the top doesn't help any.

    Other than that, great tutorials.

  • @staphinfection

Have some respect for people who speak more languages than you.

  • how do you remove and add skills? say for example youre building a trade depot but you cant because you dont have a dwarf with architecture. how do you make the dwarf learn architecture? help

  • I can't grow for some reason. Is it not possible to grow on Red Sand, or am I just missing something?

  • This is kind of like Evil Genius

  • @Xerticle Yeah, only better.

  • im using the most recent version of the game and i cant find out how to get the mud how do i do that? and i cant build outside either ? do i have to flood my mine to get the ground muddy??? please help?

  • For some reason i have alot of food at my food stockpile and barrels, however, they don't put the barrels in the stockpile, stocking all the food outside the barrel.

I have the MAX barrels set to 49 (my max)

  • could you make a tutorial about how to muddy the ground?

  • I can't plant anything in my farm plots, even though it's underground and I have seeds about 2 tiles away from it. I'm using clay as soil.

    What's wrong with this?

  • @theviewerlol Are you using the latest version of DF? If yes, then the ground needs to be muddy first.

  • @captnduck The question is, how do i make it muddy? :)

  • @ChieftainKYS That'll be in the DFVIDTUTS2010 part 2. But you just need to run water over the tiles and then get rid of the water.

  • Comment removed

  • I used clay as soil. I can't plant anything, even though I have like 12 plant spawns and using an underground farm. What's wrong with this?

  • Ingame, how do I turn off the music?

  • I've got a problem, none of my seeds are appearing in the farm plot menu.

  • @UnibX Same problem with me. Wiki'd it and found out that i have to find mud. Only problem is, I have no idea how to make mud.

  • @SargeKirby Same problem here. The thing is im actually near water, but still no growth at all.

  • @UnibX

  • I am confused, how do you make these walls? I searched in your video tutorials but I never saw how to build a house from scratch.

  • @Feloix

    Nevermind about that comment.

    I found it

  • How can you place the farm plots inside the cave like that? I can only build them outside and when I do I cannot plant my mushrooms.

  • I don't have soil.. Just stone and sand in my fortress.

    What should i do?

  • @jattus2 same here. ive started over 4 times

  • Every time i try to mine the miners don't do anything

  • @mmiguelltamargoo make sure they can reach the spaces your trying to mine

  • i try and build farm plots indoors but it says i need soil or mud. do i have to haul them inside or something?

  • No, you just can't make plots on rock. You need soft ground to work with.

  • @Josephfuture you need to build outside or else the plants will die because of no light

  • @Josephfuture or you need plants that survive underground like mushrooms and cave wheat

  • 5 tiles of farm per dwarf seems really high...I got through my first year with only 25 tiles or so, even with 20 dwarves. Won't 50 tiles fill your food supplies way too fast?

  • @UnhappyYak nah it all depends besides with his dining hall the food supply will be stable with ll the dwarves working and whatnot

  • While making the stairs downward, I hit some damp stone.

I checked out the wiki and apparently it's signs of magma or water.

Is there any way to keep mining regardless of the warning.

  • Damp stone is water. Hot stone is magma. I think.

  • Only if you feel like drowning anyone who wants to go through there.

  • Thanks for these videos. Very helpful.

  • But i think im fucked now. I've digged everywhere and there's absolutely no stone on the map.

  • Wow how'd you manage that? Did you choose a location in the middle of the desert or ocean or something?

  • Nvm i just didnt dig deep enough. And no, there are trees and forest.

  • a desert , ocean , or there is a fucking annoying aquifer in the map

  • @Elintasokas

Try digging down. You should be able to hit stone eventually.

  • So, below the downstairs I put upstairs?

  • Yep thats it. That or just keep building up/down stairs on every level, it's far easier.

  • fyi: Dwarves use Talc to keep their Plump Helmets dry.

  • Perhaps I'm using a different version, but I can not place farms indoors. It says "Needs Soil or Mud" When I look at the area, it says it's covered in rocks.

  • its because you are digging in a specific mountain, captnduck is digging in a dirt like place, unfortunatly, you and I dug into rock mountains *thats my guess at least*

  • The stairs thing completely screwed me up! My miners got all the way to the bottom and now they're trapped down there. I've done everything I could think of to get them out, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to restart... a damn shame, too, because I was finally getting it. :/

  • You've probably restarted by now, and maybe even figured out your problem, but here's the solution anyway: To go down, you *dug* your stairs out of the earth. To go back up, you will need to *build* a staircase. That is probably why you could not figure out how to go back up. The option to build a staircase is under b for Buildings and then I believe u for Upward staircase.

  • Thank you; I had figured it out since, you're right. But, it will hopefully be useful info for anyone else trying to get into the game. :D

  • holy fuck 7:00-8:00 is confusing

  • @Ihateuall, are you referring to the graphics? If so you can change the graphics- check the wiki.

If not, sorry, I don't know what you're talking about

  • what version of DF were you using? the modern one kinda sucks...

  • Comment removed

  • how did you make a farm plot in the cave?

I tried but there is no soil or mud so I can't

  • You can dig into soil layers and they count as muddy. So chances are he just dug into like silt or laom or some such. Other options are irrigation to muddy a stone floor.

  • How did you make the game run at that speed? I tried setting the frame rate, but it didn't change much? If someone has asked this question before, sorry.

  • Computer specs?

  • Have you tried changing the "Partial Print" Option in the init.txt to "YES"? Ex: [PARTIAL_PRINT:YES:2]

I noticed the game sped up on my computer from 0-2 FPS on the intro and 1-5 FPS in-game, to 100 FPS on the intro, and 20-40 FPS in-game when I did that on my really crappy old computer.

  • Get a beefy rig?

  • Having a quadcore with a singlecore dedicated to DF helps. Another thing i did at one point is to turn temperature and weather off, that helps a lot. But be careful not to turn it off while its raining, i had a fort once and the whole area was flooded after some years.

  • That could be handy in my desert biome right now. IF it ever rains that is.

I'll just need to build a big ol' resivor first.

  • I just got the message:- Farmer cancels Plant Seeds: Needs Plump helmet spawn.

I've looked at the wiki but not sure exactly how i get around this issue, any advice is appreciated.

  • Well the message tells you the problem, you apparantly dont have enough plump helmet spawn, aka plump helmet seeds. Import some from the dwarven traders

  • You don't have anymore seeds to plant ,don't worry it means that all your seeds have been planted and will be converted into food. And some food converts into seeds (eg.anything that isn't cooked)

  • Heh. Trivia I learned today: Some scientists found a spot along a fault line where there's not much of an earthquake because the plates just slip past each other. They dug two miles down to take core samples and found a lot of talc. The slip happens because talc is an incredibly soft mineral at hardness 1. Human fingernails are about 2 on the hardness scale.

I should try DF, sometime. I'm mostly acquainted by funny stuff I read about it in TV Tropes.

  • hooray for capt duck!!!

    my dwarfy hero

  • Hey, I have a wee problem. I'm still confused on the farming.

I know I can't build a plot inside the fortress (I still don't understand why you can in your video), but when I build farm plots outside I can't even plant seeds.

I have seeds, and I don't know why I can't plant them. I'm guessing it has something to do with the sandy area I chose?

  • Don't i explain this in the video? Outside farming is difficult and it requires special types of outside seeds, you can buy those from humans and elves i think.

If you have sand, then that counts as soil. Try building farms there, one level under the surface.

With any kind of sand you can farm in that AFAIK. If your top level is rock, then you have a problem. Still if that happens, try draining a small lake if you have one, that soil should work.

  • how do I irrigate a cave floor so it can grow crops?

  • Flood it with water. But watch my later videos on channeling water first.

Allthough if you are a starting player forget it, its tough stuff and its so much easier to farm in the soil.

  • You recommend 5 spaces of farm plot per dwarf? I usually bring a fair amount of food with me, but before the caravans start coming in, my dwarfs live primarily on dwarven syrup roasts. Not only can you generate a tremendous amount of food with sweet pods, but with a skilled cook they are extremely valuable too!

  • I just wan to thank you for these tutorial videos.

  • What is that patch u are using? cause im having a hard time finding what looks like yours lol. cause my beds look like 8s. oh and i cant see the fish in the water but i think i built my fort under a pool with 3 carp in it. :(

  • That's the default ASCII appearance. In an earlier video he mentioned he's using the Guybrush (16x16) tileset and the Dystopian Rhetoric (16x16) graphic set. He's also using a slightly altered color scheme, but I can't help you on that myself.

Both sets are available from the wiki (search "tileset" to find the user-made links). Installation instructions are also there.

If you want, captnduck also posted a link to a zipped-up version of his game set-up on one of these videos.

  • Probably an incredibly foolish question, but is your ingame speed actually that fast? Or is the video sped up during the activity scenes?

  • It is that fast, it isnt sped up. I got a nice computer. Anyway you will see it slow down in the later videos.

  • Hah, my bad.

I've only ever played Dwarf Fortress on my laptop - Just tried it on a dedicated processor on my PC and it runs amazingly fast XD

Love your tutorials by the way, I've been playing for ages but never quite managed to get the details, and you've managed to help me there!

  • After watching the first few videos to just get *settled in* with DF, I figured out how to start building and digging on my own. But now I'm having trouble building certain things. I've had success building a few workshops, but I can't build a bridge, any furnaces, or a trade depot. I site them but the dwarves just ignore it. I have huge stock piles of wood and stone, but my mason and carpenters just idle or do something else.

  • It's probably too late to answer this... but make sure you have a dwarf with the required skills/materials to build the workshop/building. You can check this with the "q" building menu, and by moving the cursor over the incomplete building to see the skill/labor required to construct the building.

  • yeah it is too late son my fortress burned to the ground months ago.

    GOD.

  • Isn't that the whole point though? "Losing is Fun" right? Isn't that pretty much the game's motto? If nothing wrong is happening to your fortress, such as goblin seiges, water/magma floods, or other various problems... it get's boring. xD Although... strangely enough, my second fortress (first one sucked) has 80 dwarves, and I have yet to have any problems beyond a few random goblin and kolbold theives that run at the first sign of danger... *sigh*

  • Don't get me started - started a game and wondered why none of the dwarves did anything. Then I realized I'd not given them any skills.

    :D

  • Also how can I make my masoner mine manually? I added mining to his labor but he's still not doing it(and it says he has no job) and I have my two miners still mining.

  • Oh nevermind, I just realized that I didn't have enough pick axes :P

  • Don't you make the rooms too big? I heard that rooms can collapse if it's 7x7 and it needs support.

  • I thought so to at first, but that was only in the "2D" version of dwarf fortress. Since the game gained a Z-axis, you dont need any sort of support at all. You dig out an entire floor, and as long as there is 1 tile to support it, it will be fine.

  • Well I don't see any supports in the middle of the rooms. Should I bother with supports?

  • Lol, my carpenter is a retard, he seems to love collecting wood rather than building stuff. Unfortunately I started in heavily forested area, and high cliffs made of not limestone, but marble. Its taking forever to carve out a simple fortress

  • You can turn off the wood hauling job for the carpenter, and any other hauling jobs. That will keep him focused on building.

  • thanks for the tutorial mate~

    very helpful

  • "Be careful though if you make rooms too big without any kind of support, the cavern could collapse".

This isn't true since the move from 2D; you could dig out an entire z-level and provided there's one tile holding up the rest of the map (including your up/down stairs), it won't collapse.

This is good to know when you're constructing more complex architecture ;)

  • just Great!!!,thank you so much , now there is a wonderful tutorial :)

  • when i try to make a farm inside it says "needs soil or mud". How did you get yours to work?

  • Asi i said farms cant just be built underground anywhere, they need to be built in the soil. Soil is the top level ground just underneath the service.

If you've seen my later videos, notice that the walls in my farm area are brownish, and that when i go deeper down the walls become grey stone. The top level is the soil, so dig out some rooms just under the surface and build farms there.
