@OmegaOmotron You're playing the 2010 version probably, farms now need "mud" floors or something like that. You make that by watering the ground, just look at captnducks' 2010 vid tutorials, they explain how to farm in the 2010 version.

@captnduck How can I run water over the tiles? And why don't you need that in the tutorial video? The four former tutorials were great and helped a lot!
5 tiles of farm per dwarf seems really high...I got through my first year with only 25 tiles or so, even with 20 dwarves. Won't 50 tiles fill your food supplies way too fast?
Perhaps I'm using a different version, but I can not place farms indoors. It says "Needs Soil or Mud" When I look at the area, it says it's covered in rocks.
its because you are digging in a specific mountain, captnduck is digging in a dirt like place, unfortunatly, you and I dug into rock mountains *thats my guess at least*

You've probably restarted by now, and maybe even figured out your problem, but here's the solution anyway: To go down, you *dug* your stairs out of the earth. To go back up, you will need to *build* a staircase. That is probably why you could not figure out how to go back up. The option to build a staircase is under b for Buildings and then I believe u for Upward staircase.
You can dig into soil layers and they count as muddy. So chances are he just dug into like silt or laom or some such. Other options are irrigation to muddy a stone floor.
How did you make the game run at that speed? I tried setting the frame rate, but it didn't change much? If someone has asked this question before, sorry.

Heh. Trivia I learned today: Some scientists found a spot along a fault line where there's not much of an earthquake because the plates just slip past each other. They dug two miles down to take core samples and found a lot of talc. The slip happens because talc is an incredibly soft mineral at hardness 1. Human fingernails are about 2 on the hardness scale.
I should try DF, sometime. I'm mostly acquainted by funny stuff I read about it in TV Tropes.
Hey, I have a wee problem. I'm still confused on the farming.
I know I can't build a plot inside the fortress (I still don't understand why you can in your video), but when I build farm plots outside I can't even plant seeds.
I have seeds, and I don't know why I can't plant them. I'm guessing it has something to do with the sandy area I chose?
Don't i explain this in the video? Outside farming is difficult and it requires special types of outside seeds, you can buy those from humans and elves i think.
If you have sand, then that counts as soil. Try building farms there, one level under the surface.
With any kind of sand you can farm in that AFAIK. If your top level is rock, then you have a problem. Still if that happens, try draining a small lake if you have one, that soil should work.
You recommend 5 spaces of farm plot per dwarf? I usually bring a fair amount of food with me, but before the caravans start coming in, my dwarfs live primarily on dwarven syrup roasts. Not only can you generate a tremendous amount of food with sweet pods, but with a skilled cook they are extremely valuable too!
What is that patch u are using? cause im having a hard time finding what looks like yours lol. cause my beds look like 8s. oh and i cant see the fish in the water but i think i built my fort under a pool with 3 carp in it. :(
That's the default ASCII appearance. In an earlier video he mentioned he's using the Guybrush (16x16) tileset and the Dystopian Rhetoric (16x16) graphic set. He's also using a slightly altered color scheme, but I can't help you on that myself.
Both sets are available from the wiki (search "tileset" to find the user-made links). Installation instructions are also there.
If you want, captnduck also posted a link to a zipped-up version of his game set-up on one of these videos.
After watching the first few videos to just get *settled in* with DF, I figured out how to start building and digging on my own. But now I'm having trouble building certain things. I've had success building a few workshops, but I can't build a bridge, any furnaces, or a trade depot. I site them but the dwarves just ignore it. I have huge stock piles of wood and stone, but my mason and carpenters just idle or do something else.
It's probably too late to answer this... but make sure you have a dwarf with the required skills/materials to build the workshop/building. You can check this with the "q" building menu, and by moving the cursor over the incomplete building to see the skill/labor required to construct the building.
Isn't that the whole point though? "Losing is Fun" right? Isn't that pretty much the game's motto? If nothing wrong is happening to your fortress, such as goblin seiges, water/magma floods, or other various problems... it get's boring. xD Although... strangely enough, my second fortress (first one sucked) has 80 dwarves, and I have yet to have any problems beyond a few random goblin and kolbold theives that run at the first sign of danger... *sigh*
Also how can I make my masoner mine manually? I added mining to his labor but he's still not doing it(and it says he has no job) and I have my two miners still mining.
I thought so to at first, but that was only in the "2D" version of dwarf fortress. Since the game gained a Z-axis, you dont need any sort of support at all. You dig out an entire floor, and as long as there is 1 tile to support it, it will be fine.
Lol, my carpenter is a retard, he seems to love collecting wood rather than building stuff. Unfortunately I started in heavily forested area, and high cliffs made of not limestone, but marble. Its taking forever to carve out a simple fortress
"Be careful though if you make rooms too big without any kind of support, the cavern could collapse".
This isn't true since the move from 2D; you could dig out an entire z-level and provided there's one tile holding up the rest of the map (including your up/down stairs), it won't collapse.
This is good to know when you're constructing more complex architecture ;)
Asi i said farms cant just be built underground anywhere, they need to be built in the soil. Soil is the top level ground just underneath the service.
If you've seen my later videos, notice that the walls in my farm area are brownish, and that when i go deeper down the walls become grey stone. The top level is the soil, so dig out some rooms just under the surface and build farms there.
Just wondering, What Tileset are you using?

With any kind of sand you can farm in that AFAIK. If your top level is rock, then you have a problem. Still if that happens, try draining a small lake if you have one, that soil should work.

how do I irrigate a cave floor so it can grow crops?
gopherdude 2 years ago
Flood it with water. But watch my later videos on channeling water first.
Allthough if you are a starting player forget it, its tough stuff and its so much easier to farm in the soil.

Probably an incredibly foolish question, but is your ingame speed actually that fast? Or is the video sped up during the activity scenes?
Nomaki 2 years ago
It is that fast, it isnt sped up. I got a nice computer. Anyway you will see it slow down in the later videos.

Hah, my bad.
I've only ever played Dwarf Fortress on my laptop - Just tried it on a dedicated processor on my PC and it runs amazingly fast XD
Love your tutorials by the way, I've been playing for ages but never quite managed to get the details, and you've managed to help me there!

IAmPhotoBucket 3 years ago
It's probably too late to answer this... but make sure you have a dwarf with the required skills/materials to build the workshop/building. You can check this with the "q" building menu, and by moving the cursor over the incomplete building to see the skill/labor required to construct the building.

yeah it is too late son my fortress burned to the ground months ago.
GOD.

*sigh*
Samurai0316 2 years ago
Don't get me started - started a game and wondered why none of the dwarves did anything. Then I realized I'd not given them any skills.

Also how can I make my masoner mine manually? I added mining to his labor but he's still not doing it(and it says he has no job) and I have my two miners still mining.

Oh nevermind, I just realized that I didn't have enough pick axes :P
eNergizer361 3 years ago
Don't you make the rooms too big? I heard that rooms can collapse if it's 7x7 and it needs support.
eNergizer361 3 years ago
I thought so to at first, but that was only in the "2D" version of dwarf fortress. Since the game gained a Z-axis, you dont need any sort of support at all. You dig out an entire floor, and as long as there is 1 tile to support it, it will be fine.
captnduck 3 years ago
Well I don't see any supports in the middle of the rooms. Should I bother with supports?
eNergizer361 3 years ago
Lol, my carpenter is a retard, he seems to love collecting wood rather than building stuff. Unfortunately I started in heavily forested area, and high cliffs made of not limestone, but marble. Its taking forever to carve out a simple fortress
TotalVengance 3 years ago
You can turn off the wood hauling job for the carpenter, and any other hauling jobs. That will keep him focused on building.

thanks for the tutorial mate~
very helpful

"Be careful though if you make rooms too big without any kind of support, the cavern could collapse".
This isn't true since the move from 2D; you could dig out an entire z-level and provided there's one tile holding up the rest of the map (including your up/down stairs), it won't collapse.
This is good to know when you're constructing more complex architecture ;)

just Great!!!,thank you so much , now there is a wonderful tutorial :)

when i try to make a farm inside it says "needs soil or mud". How did you get yours to work?
emespain 3 years ago
Asi i said farms cant just be built underground anywhere, they need to be built in the soil. Soil is the top level ground just underneath the service.
If you've seen my later videos, notice that the walls in my farm area are brownish, and that when i go deeper down the walls become grey stone. The top level is the soil, so dig out some rooms just under the surface and build farms there.
