I see where you're coming from, but have you heard both versions? The structure of Snow Patrols IS better, take the solo for example, in snow patrol's version there is a guitar solo, in Leona Lewis' version there is also a guitar part, but she warbles ALL THE WAY THROUGH. Music is about ALL the parts, so why so vocal obsessed? You get the impression from Leona Lewis that she loves her voice too much and doesn't actually care about the feeling of the song, or the meaning of the lyrics.

Any sound producer or real music critic would also tell you without a doubt that snow patrol's version portrays more tonal expression throughout the song as well. Let's be honest though, covers are almost never as good as the originals because the singer can't truly relate in the same way as the original writer, you can only do your best.

I don't know about this stuff on a technical level but isn't it a case of beauty being in the eye of the beholder? A cover could be developed with the same levels of emotion if the song meant something to the person covering it.

Personally I see the cover to be better in every way you mentioned; I don't see how you can judge the composition when it appeals differently to different people, who's to say she's doing anything wrong when her song was more popular than Snow Patrol's?

Actually to this moment in time Snow Patrols version has out-grossed Leona Lewis' version, despite the advantage she had through publicity (whereas Run was SPs debut). Leona Lewis got higher in the charts, but like I said, she had a HUGE amount of publicity backing her, Snow Patrol still claimed the number 2 spot without Simon Cowell and his publicity machine.

well it wasn't really orchestrated publicity it just happened as she natually decided to cover it for the Live Lounge, thats where the publicity started through the radio because she sounded so good and did such a gr8 rendition of it. Technically Leonas' out-grossed Snow Patrol's version as it made the US and Canadian chart alone on downloads and to be fair i love both versions but now Leonas' better lol her voice is just spectacular :)

Will Young's version of Unchained Melody got further in the charts than the original, but it's not even close to being as good. Where something gets in the charts reflects nothing, advertising alone can swing it.

Yes she has a good voice, but the song is about music, and the harmony of the voice and the music creating a single piece, whereas LL is coming across as a diva, that she loves herself, and her voice, throughout the song. You don't 'feel' the song the same way you do the original.
