Brilliant performance! This hymn, standing 2nd in my list of preferences, right after Handel's "Halleluyah" and before "Jerusalem", is the most bright reflection of the spirit of Patriotism. By listening to this piece of music one can clearly realise what is it being а Briton.
@Drakelx555 Yes. It is from the English composer Gustav Holst's 'Jupiter'. A section named 'The Thaxted' is used in the English Hymn 'I vow to the my country'. Which happened to be Princess Diana's favourite Hymn and was performed at her funeral and at the funeral of Sir Winston Churchill many years before. :)
Civ V does a great job of its music - they chose Thaxted as the piece of music to represent England, so when you play as England you get this piece as your first background music. If you meet the English as another nation you get this as the background music. If as the English you have enemies declare war on you, you get another version of Thaxted, done on pipes in a militaristic style.
@ColdWarShot When I was at school our headmaster used to insist that all the verses were sung in assembly & we were expected to know it off by heart by the second year, I can still sing all three verses.
The Death of Major Peirson, 6 January 1781, by John Singleton Copley, painted in 1783. It depicts the death of Major Francis Peirson in the Battle of Jersey on 6 January 1781
This is a WONDERFUL versions of this moving classic. It evokes many scenes in one's mind of sacrifice, triumph, galantry and victory. Very uplifting, inspiring hope. Thanks for posting.
Was this written before or after The Planets by Holst?

I would like to buy the album with this rendition of "I vow to thee" on it, does anyone know the name of the album?

Being an atheist does not mean being incapable of feeling spiritual beauty.

If God Save The Queen is ever replaced (I highly doubt it will be) I'd want it to be by this.

@ImActuallyBatman Either this or Blake's "Jerusalem." I think this one would be the better one.

@PolishedMonocle Agreed, now if ONLY someone would record the second verse instead of skipping it!
