  • Loving this! Amazing.

  • This may be the most amazing and inspiring performance and instrument I have seen in a long time. So very American and so "real". I'm grateful there are people in this country that take a simple thing and can do so much with it, as well as sharing your whole adventure

Thanks so much for sharing, and best of luck to you in your journey

  • All I have to say is Keep it up and you should have a utube video on tuning 3 strings and four string CBG,s..That would help alot of newcomers..and you are definately the King brother :)

  • How many cigarbox guitars do you have?

    Melodeeman...

  • @uncleboogie69 I've lost count. If you include the ones in the Speal's Tavern Cigar Box Guitar Museum, I probably own over 40

  • cool man

  • Sounds almost identical to a banjo.

  • this makes me wanna dance a jig and ave my hand in the air

  • I am planning on building one myself. What type of pickups do you advice using?

Been thining about humbucker pickups, Big strings tuned E open. make the nek myself and create a neck through guitar neck. I want the sound to be a bit dirty and mean.

  • REAL FUCKING AMERICAN GENIUS!!!!! MR. I can take garbage and jam harder than you guy!!! Awesome. you will be jamming in the apocalyptic wasteland the US will become and you will still be creating cool shit.

  • did i here a cream riff in there?

  • @hunterdanjones hahhaha yeppp

  • Badass. Also, glad to still be getting the newsletter via email BTW.

  • its tuned AEA

  • This is good. Sorry for asking technical things, is this tuned to GBD or DGD?

  • how hard would it be to make a resonator cigar box guitar. or dobro style. would you need a ukulele sized cone or would a regular fit? any thoughts?

  • @jkuebler89 In keeping with the theme I'm going to use the bottom 1/3rd of a coffee can on the cigar box.

  • Whats the best strings to use for a 3 string guitar? Nylon or steel? Whats most common and whats used in this video?

  • There are no rules...and no "best use" when it comes to cigar box guitars. Try any and everything! Nothing is common and everything is uncommon about these instruments. That's why they're so freakin' cool!

I personally use the A D and G strings from a pack of John Pearse Acoustic 'light medium' guage strings.

  • William the part by the tuning pegs is called the nut. The bridge is by the picking hand.

  • OK, looking close at this thing (I want to make one too) I see a nail for a nut and no frets. Right?

  • Rockin! Thanks for keeping the Cigar Box Guitar culture booming

  • what kind of sting?

  • Wow that was so awesome, your playing is inspirational!

  • did i hear sunshine of your love?

  • I don't get why people always go with the neck-thru design... I mean, I understand that gluing on a neck is a little more complicated, but wouldn't the sound be a lot better?

TBH i don't really know, but I'll be building mine within the next week, and it'll be a "glue-on" neck

  • Hey I'm going to be doing a glue on as well, good lick

  • Neck-through design creates sustain in the finished instrument. But if you're doing an acoustic with the central sound hole, go ahead with the glue on model. Just make sure to reinforce your box or string tension might be a real bugger.

  • Ooh, never even though about sustain. I'm not too worried about that tho, I would rather have the better sound and power that comes with a "glue-on" neck and bridge.

  • That's because a thru-neck will handle the tension a lot better. stick with the thru neck, or else your instrument might fall apart in pieces.

  • neck thru design gives you more sustain...

  • EVen with the neck-thru design it is still glued to the cigar box.

If the neck was simply glued to one end there would be nothing on the other end for the strings to go through. The Cigar box itself could not support the string tension.

  • I think if I got a thick enough box, it could probably support just three strings.

But by having the bridge glued to the soundboard, as opposed to just having the neck sit on top of the guitar, you get much better volume, because of the leverage the strings put on the soundboard... make sense?

I've been doing my homework :D

  • The bridge IS on the top of the box (soundboard). The stick goes through the box, flush with , then under, the top. If you wanted more area inside the box, you could probably thin the part of the stick a fair bit, but even an inch thick maple "backbone" would be much stronger than the cedar used in making cigar boxes.

  • OK, this is tough to explain like this, if I could draw a picture...

So with a normal CBG bridge, there is only pressure downwards.

With a normal guitar bridge, the strings PULL on the bridge and have much more pressure against the soundboard, creating much more volume...

And it should be strong enough. Acoustic guitars don't seem to fall apart, and they have very thin tops and minimal bracing.

    Just my thoughts.

  • I just want to clarify... When I say "bridge", I mean the point where the strings end... I notice a lot of CBGs where the strings are attached at the end of the neck, and the "bridge' is just a screw sitting on the soundboard... That is not what I mean by bridge.

Everybody needs to turn and look at their acoustic guitars... You'll get a better understanding of what I mean

  • Neato!

  • fab tone.

  • OM!!G so cool the sound xD!

  • how i can i measure out the fretS?

  • String it up and tune it then use a digital tuner to work out where the frets are, then simply mark it.

  • no need for frets with a bottleneck :)

  • would the pin things on an acoustic guitar work to hold the strings on a cbg? (new to cbg's)

  • Are you talking about Zither pins

  • what do you use for frets?

  • My imagination

  • normaly people use fretwire, draw or burn them in, or go fretless

  • go scalloped like a blues player

  • This is soooo cool! I bet he could play the phone book!! :)

  • thanks for the tips, saw some things I could use there in your finger work.

  • sound like kazakh dombra a 2 string turkic long neck bowl lute

  • can you tell me what kind of strings you used? pleaseee

  • ADG strings from a pack of John Pearse acoustic guitar strings

  • thanks a lot

  • @InsurrectionRex Correct, and he tunes it in GDG, AEA, AEG or GDA,

  • @InsurrectionRex Hey Shane, is that nylon/bronze/steel?

  • so fucking awesome...

  • I'm trying to make one of those guitars but I have alot of doubts, the pincipal is how I tune the guitar? standard? from which string?? I really appreciate the help...

  • hey, I have a shirt just like that :)

  • I dont no how the fuck you did this....God bless ya..

  • Been playing this guitar since 1996, so it's kinda natural to me anymore. Also, the key to fast slide playing on 3 strings is the short spark plug socket I use as a slide. It enables me to jump in and out of the strings.

  • @InsurrectionRex I also found a steel spacer at Lowe's that was perfect. $1.51 lol. Great stuff. I just made my first a few months ago, and I'm jonesin' for another already!

  • @sitkatop sorry hit the wrong button...

  • ROCK ON!

  • Great Job,I loved it!!!!!

  • brilliant stuff!

  • Absolutely kick ass!

  • Great Scott man!!! How u do dat? Supa sweet.

  • Best CBG performance ever. Nicely done, Mr. Speal.

  • one of the best cgb songs ive ever seen shane!

  • Agreed

  • whats the tuning

  • tuning is either AEA or GDG (can't really remember...half the time, I don't even use a tuner!) I use this simple I - IV - I tuning for most of my 3-string songs.
