Windoze free for 3 yrs!! Linux Power!! Cinellerra seems to do everything I want, but man it's quirky, the chroma key plugin kills, I'm def gonna spend some time with Blender...nice work!!
Thanks for taking the time to make this... I am unhappy with current NLEs for Linux and it is nice to see there is a nice alternative I have overlooked.
@carson535 not really, you can use offset and cropping, but you can't scale a strip's clip, it's a pretty big limitation. Also, if the aspect ratio of the image or video your using in the sequencer differs from the scene's, it will be stretched and distorted. Basically unless you use offset or crop, anything you put in the sequencer is stretched to full size, without preserving aspect ratio. At least thats been my experience thus far with the sequencer.
@uranorexic Hello. :) All versions of Blender are Free it's an open source 3d animation program and has a video editor embedded. It is probably not very good for people just testing the waters as it is robust (complex). If you're running linux you should look into Kdenlive and Openshot. On windows you might look into Virtualdub, though I run linux so I don't have much to say about Virtualdub.
I was looking all over for a good video editor, and was just short of buying one, then found out Blender (which I already had on my computer to mess around with learning 3D) had the VSE. This was a great help with getting started, thanks! Now I just need to find some more advanced editing techniques (splitting/transitioning vids, etc.).
Nice. I've been scared to death of Blender since I saw the interface in an Inkscape tutorial, but after watching this, it looks like a great way to go. Thanks!
Thank you very much for this video - I wasn't aware Blender could do this - I've been fretting around for a few hours trying to find a free video editor for future animations to be made in Blender and I never realized the program itself did it - thanx!
Great tutorial. Many tutorials are hard to follow, but I have a better understanding of the Video Sequence editor now and what to look for on my screen. I've worked with other software such as 3d Max, Final Cut Cinelerra, Jahshaka, etc. and Blender is a little tougher to get into without help. As for Windows I dual boot. I don't like Windows, and Linux has its issues as well if you're not familiar with command line to fix issues and configure which is not always easy for many people.
@chrisxdeboy I don't use Windows since Windows is terribly unstable. I use Ubuntu Linux so that I have a steady and non-crashing computing environment.
My suggestion is to either ditch Microsoft Windows or at the very least set up a dual boot system so you can use a reasonable (robust and powerful linux) operating system when working on anything of importance.
@iamsemjaza Heh, I'd be using linux, except TF2 and steam aren't on the platform yet, and the only linux computers we have aren't powerful enough for video editing.
@chrisxdeboy You can try lighthouse pup. I've installed it on 11 year old Compaqs running Windows 98 and it runs better than the Windows 7 machines we bought for the computer lab last summer which has come up with bugs after 3 months. lighthouse was made for older machines and comes with tons of software, and I've added Blender, Cinelerra etc.

@iamsemjaza Windows is terribly unstable? When did you see windows last time? Nice feature with the blender's video editing though - it's pretty hard to find usable, free video editing software. Are there any external effect plugins available?
@ZeeKat Every time I talk to my friends and their windows systems crash dude. Windows has no stability compared to Linux. My Linux systems only fail when an actual physical piece of hardware gives out.
There are quite a quite a few effects plugins, just google blender plugins. :)

awesome video, thank you. but I have a doubt about something you did OUTSIDE the blender.
If I'm not wrong, you are a Ubuntu user, right? I use here WinXP and K-Ubuntu.
I like to make tutorials of things I know, but I simply couldn't find a good software for screen capture neither in windows nor in Linux. (years of frustration , so I quit and now I tape with a camera the screen.)
and you seem to have one that works, so PLEASE.. can you tell me what software are you using for screen capture?
Thanks HEAPS! That was really helpful. Before this I was trying to do all my video editing using Avidemux (great program) as Kino wouldn't handle any res more than DV, kdenlive was too unstable and Cinelerra was a bit to advanced for me.
@MasterofMysteryVol2 create a 3D television (a 3d scene), and apply the video as the texture of its screen,
or (I believe it's faster) create a television, and make the screen area to be alpha (with "alpha channel" or "chroma key") and make this image or image sequence of your TV, running in an above layer.
as the screen is in alpha, it means it is transparent, so it will show everything is behind/under it.
I hope I helped, e-mail me if you want more ideas.
I am frustrated atm.... I am doing exactly like you but Blender wont import my videos correctly! My AVI file rendered in Sony Vegas gets all =%¤&ed up. And when i pick like MOV or whatever it says no FFMPEG! And my add doesnt show like movie + audio (HD) like yours and I have same version as you! please help :(
It's about a puppet that doesn't want to get squirted by a squirt gun. You can see it here on youtube on my friend chrisabraham's profile it's called "Don't Soak Me Bro!"
maybe you can help me with a problem, i find the sound prview to be quite inaccurate when doing precise editing. even when i enable the sync function in the audio tab. is there a way do increase the accuracy? because right now im scrubing over my strips(sounds odd^^) to find the place to cut (sounds even odder).
Wao! Great job. Thanks for clearing up some many questions. I was able to splice together my video while listening to you and I have never used blender before today.
Generally there's no reason to capture the whole screen, ON youtube (and other video hosting sites) whole screens tend to be hard to read too. Focus is good. ;) gtk-recordmydesktop has a "follow my cursor" option.
Yes. I had installed 3.1, thinking newer would be better. I changed to 2.6 and reset the user data path to default - instead of my custom %HOME% variable and it's working fine now. Now if I can keep my wacom service from hanging in camstudio - nothing is ever easy.
What screen-capture-to-avi software do you prefer? Windows btw.
That makes sense. I'm not certain how to handle the aspect ratio. Youtube's HD is, I think, 16:9 (.5625), while my monitor is 1440x900 (.625). So I guess I will end up squeezing, cropping or adding a border.
Unfortunately, my blender install did not go well, something about finding python. It says I should check the console but I do not know where the console is located - so I am trying to find a forum for posting a question about that too.
Thank you for this tutorial, it has been very helpful.
You mentioned that I should keep the resolutions and frame rates the same: does that mean I need to have the source video the same size as the video I plan to post? I was planning on recording (via camstudio) screen grabs of my desktop, which is 1440x900, then post it at the HD resolution of youtube's HD format (whatever that is) using blender to downsize the avi source. Will that work?
Basically I was sayiing that all of your source videos should all be of the same resolution and frame rate. They should all match (I have several camera that take video at different resolutions and frame rates). After that you can resize as you wish in blender (but try to keep the aspect ratio the same).
I believe no matter the size of the video it will still play. But if you have one sized at 600x800 and it fits your sequenced size, and another vid with 720x576, you won't see the entire frame/video. Right?
Generally yeah, but you could use the transform effect to change the video size, however don't mess up the aspect ratio.
To use an effect right click on a strip to select it, then add the effect, some effects require two strips to be selected. Hold down shift while right clicking to choose multiple strips.
i feel like i followed this to the T, but somehow i'm not getting any sound in the final render.
my original file is a quicktime movie (.mov) i formatted it as both ffmpeg and quicktime format. The ffmpeg gave me an invalid file, while the quicktime format gave me a video with no sound.
Did you remember to turn on "multiplex audio" under the audio tab in the render dialogue? Also some systems seem to have a codec issue with mp3 sound muxing in video files and need mp2 (broken or missing codecs on some operating systems).
I did remember to turn on the multiplex audio and i put it under mp3. It seems though there is some sort of conflict with codecs between quicktime, WMP, and AVI.
I haven't gotten a hang on what format works with what format-type HOWEVER i've recently come across the VLC media player. it's an open source player that can play every type of media file under the sun. It doesn't matter how I set the format, it plays it no matter what!
howdy. great intro. One trick I discovered that I havent found documented anywhere involves dropping a speed control on a video clip and then extending the clip. Instead of simply duplicating the last frame, it will change the speed of the video to match the new strip length.
I like your videos, and you are obviously very knowledgeable about Blender. Thanks for the information.
