What a band. Saw them mid-70's. This is among my top 4 Renaissance songs (Prologue, Ocean Gypsy, Ashes are Burning are the others). Everyone should hear Annie Haslam at least once in their lives. Or John Tout for that matter. BTW, Jon Camp's bass solo on Ashes Are Burning may have been the best bass solo I ever saw live (in rock).
Found out about this group from clicking the Random Article button on wikipedia and, being curious enough, decided to listen to one of their songs here on youtube... I fell in love almost instantly.
This song and Al Stewart's "Roads to Moscow" both opened my brain to the history of Russia circa WW II ... the first time I heard each of them, I wept.
Extrait du fameux LP Live de 76, voici le titre "Mother Russia" ... monstrueux de douceur, de clairvoyance, de larmes et de rire que l'on sent au travers de ces notes. Une belle page d'histoire mise en musique magistralement !
I saw this great group at the end of the 70s, I believe, in Berkeley. They headlined with Al DiMeola, a bad choice, although I like Al a lot. But their music was so different and at least half of the people came for Al. So when Renaissance came on people just walked out. It was embarrassing, but I did get front row seats due to the exodus.
What an amazing song. I like to listen to Al Stewart's Roads to Moscow first, then this one, as they are about the same person, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.
I was in the 13th row center during the 2nd of 3 nights (June 20, 21, and 22, 1975) at Carnegie Hall-NYC during the taping of this album and with the addition of the New York Philharmonic backing them up, this was the most glorious concert I can recall. Annie Haslam's voice sounded like it came down from heaven!
I saw them in Heidelberg in 1976 - fantastic - opener for them was the amazing Moog wizzard TOMITA. If somebody is interested to see the concert fotos - see Flickr - Affendaddy - Albums - Renaissance.
I would here this 'POWERFULL' haunting song on KSHE-95, - Saint Louis, M.O..
Parkway Central people! Give your feelings to this! It reminds in my gut, the bitersweet happiness of that time, with its internacine sadnes of great athletics gone wrong;anerexia(sp),bulimia and injurie. You people never new what happend! Agregious digression(I never could spell).
Annie's voice and Terry Sulivan's drums are particularly breathtaking in this rendition. Its the middle of summer and I feel a cold wind while listening to this!
Saw them LIVE at the American Theatre in St. Louis... mid 70's... AWESOME.... today's "talent" couldn't draw these guys bathwater!! LOL!!!

I saw them in the 80s supporting Steeleye Span at the Royal Festival Hall.
GOD, I was BORED. The endless piano noodling! The needless cruelty to acoustic guitars! That bloody mellatron! AARRGGHH!

It's impossible to imagine a band like this coming together and making it now.
The seventies had their embarassments - but Renaissance was a miracle.
Give me the music from 68-76 anytime.

JANIE...FORGIVE ME FOR BEING REDUNDANT.
I am this Passionate, ABOUT THIS PARTICLAR tune.
Besides, it takes ne back to an ara when I regularly "sucked-down" Bolshoi coccktails, Renaissance performing next door @ Carnegie Hall.
It truly...was "A Trip"...
