"... to Iran... I mean, Iraq..." Wag the Dog much? Spineless puppets of the Saudi King. American's are so useless ... no truth left so we all watch Oprah while children die in the desert for Oil.
Seriously, if you propagandists could think for yourselves for 2 fucking seconds you'd realize helen thomas actually cares about truth, unlike the rest of you douche bags.
Really I agree with you. She jumped all over Bush for his years and it is so good to see her jumping these idiots now! She is wanting the truth and she is NOT afraid to ask it! She is open and I really love it. Unlike the rest of the Obama ass kissers shes trying to get REAL answers!
She's supposed to do that. The rest of the media rolled over and played dead. Andrea Mitchell's gone (foreign policy beat) and April Ryan, while a bit out of line to some, is perhaps closest to her in not backing down.
Anyone who uses the phrase "so called terrorists" to refer to the monsters who slaughtered 3000 innocents in cold blood on 9/11 loses their right to have ANYTHING else they say taken seriously
We won't have to do anything in Iran, Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel will take care of that for us. Israel is Iran's primary target. They'd only turn on us once Israel's out of the way (which will never happen on Benjamin Netanyahu's watch)
That's not the point. The point is that 9/11 was planned by terrorists trained in Afghanistan and given sanctuary and funding by the Taliban government, and right now the Taliban could take over that country's government again if we don't stop them, because their government and army is not currently strong enough to do this on their own.
If we don't stop them now, they might do this later. That sounds an awful lost like pre-emptive warfare to me. If you're saying we need to go to where they were, we need to bomb Germany and Saudi Arabia too. They also trained in Florida for a while. A group taking over their country sounds like a civil war/revolution that we have no right to intervene. If someone helped England in the 1700's we wouldn't be America today.
Not if the group taking over their country is one that has explicitly called for the destruction of the U.S. With Iraq you may be right, because with Saddam out of power, there may not be any significant figures there who wish specifically for our destruction. But when you have a group that ALREADY has bankrolled the cold-blooded slaughter of 3000 civilians, preventing them from coming back to power is not "pre-emptive" action--they've ALREADY attacked us, albeit kind of by proxy.
Reread this comment, and think about what we're responsible for. We've bankrolled the cold-blooded slaughter of over 1 million civilians. We had no right to even enter their country, but we did. We destroyed it, murdered their leader, destroyed their government, set up a giant colony, exported some of their citizens to torture and murder, and killed tons of innocent people. We imported fundamentalists that regressed human rights there. Everything was fine before we conquered it.
I completely reject your premise about "bankrolling the cold-blooded slaughter of over 1 million civilians." We didn't support the insurgents who were doing most of that killing--we stayed over there in that hell hole to try to stop that killing. Also have problems with that line about "murdered their leader" --no, actually the Iraqis executed their war criminal of a leader--we had nothing to do with that trial OR execution. Also, it's not a colony--colonies are permanent, ours is not.
I want you to set me straight on this, because I don't even slightly agree with you. If you don't get emailed messages you get that are private, I messaged you there. I hate character limits.
The German, Saudi, (and Florida) governments had nothing to do with bankrolling their attacks, sponsoring training, or giving safe havens to Al-Qaida--all of which were done by the Taliban, and will be done again if they take over in Afghanistan again. When we were trying to become American, we weren't doing so with the intention of destroying any other nation. If we had been, the nation we were targeting for destruction would have had EVERY RIGHT to help England.
Saudi Arabia had EVERYTHING to do with bankrolling and providing safe haven. Everything.... Anyways, I hate what has happened, what is going on (even before our involvement) in afghanistan, bc I've been very politically active on social issues since I was 19 or 20. I don't care if it is their tradition of culture to oppress women and gays since before time, it is not right. I would take out a 2nd mortgage to donate to help that cause & get involved, but the terrorism effort is a false economy.
Not the Saudi government, they didn't--they worked WITH us to determine the identities of the hijackers, and they cooperated with our investigation. Any money that they got from the Saudi government could have been channeled fraudulently through front funds, but the Saudi government did not provide money to terror groups with the intention of helping them attack the U.S.--the Taliban did.
Now it seems like you disagree with Iraq too, but my point wasn't to charge you with supporting the cause. That is what we did. WE have to own that. We did it based off bad intelligence, and we've moved on somewhat based off intelligence gathered from torture and bribes. A ton of the info we have now isn't good either. Then we have the history of Iraq on us. If you were a woman (or are) would you date someone who beat his previous wife? No, because history repeats itself.
I agreed with Iraq when we went in because we had no other choice with the intelligence we had. I'm upset that we could not get the intelligence right, I think the war was handled terribly, but with the state it is in now, I think it is time to start withdrawing. I don't quite get your dating analogy.
I was saying we some entity has a certain behavior established in their past, it is going to continue.... That we would botch Afghanistan and Pakistan too. Unfortunately I supported the Iraq war too, because of what we were sold. I should disclose that here. I don't know that I've ever been so ashamed of anything.
I drifted from the issue and got into my own personal stuff. Sorry. There is no government in afghanistan to topple. There is no infrastructure. It is social chaos there, and we are fighting the people. If you want to destroy these organized efforts in pakistan and afghanistan for 9/11 that is fine, but it can't be a massive military operation. Obama resold the idea as a surgical procedure, and that is what needs to be done. Otherwise our collateral damage is too great both financial & social.
And if Obama can do this as a surgical procedure, more power to him--I'm not sure he can. But it needs to be done somehow, because the Taliban cannot be allowed to come back to power over there, or we'll be right back where we were on September 10th, and everything we've done will REALLY all be for nothing.

Thank God we have Helen Thomas!
At least she is not afraid to ask the hard questions!
Sam Stein Huffington PostWheres Sam???
Lucky for Obama Sam Stein got him out of the jam at his first so-called press conference.
Might another journalist of Thomass integrity followed up with a hard question?
Then it was Mara Liasson of NPR to whom Obama gave the floor. No more hard questions would follow after Helen Thomass question was dodged by Obama.
