Straight screenshots, dump into paint, save as a bitmap, then edit with photoshop.

With my software, Ctrl+V is default for open in a new window (Ctrl+E is paste in the window you have open). For any other software, just check the Edit -> Paste menus, and it'll give you options to paste in a new window, new layer, new selection etc. Just look at the shortcut keys on there to figure it out.

I do mine 800x800 pixels, then just set it to repeat over the whole background. You can do it bigger or smaller, I just find that's a good average size, doesn't repeat too often, and even on a small screen you see the whole thing.

As I said in description, its not exactly Photoshop, but a very similar program called Paint Shop Pro. Not sure if its still in distribution though.
