Europeans 25 000 years ago weren't white, if racial lineage and ownership of the Americas is what some seek to validate with the Kennewick man case. The white race is a much more recent genetic development. Solutreans don't change the fact that surviving Native Americans are for all intents and purposes as native as Americans will ever get. There is no ancient, migrational excuse to absolve post-columbian Europeans of the genocide and the rape of the land in the Americas these last 500 years.
If you find what appear to be very old human remains(leather items, no dental work, etc) be VERY careful who you report them to. Find an honest anthropologist first.
If the bones belong to the white first settlers of this continent, the fedgov and indians will be very anxious to steal them and destroy them.
Kennewick Man very nearly met this fate and he may still. The site where he was found has been utterly detroyed by the federal government. They admit it was intentional.
This is great. I am going to add it to my video playlist. I am from the Lower Elwha Tribe. We will be returning our ancestor's which the State of Washington made us dig up a few years ago very shortly. Thank you. I am interested in your video. It made me cry.
Jed, We played this film today in our class about contemprary issues in Indian communities as reflected in film. It is a 200 level college course and it generated more than an hour of lively debate. The film was much appreciated for its even-handedness and that encouraged students with a diversity of opinions to join in. Thanks!
Wait...nevermind. The film I saw was "Bones of Contention." I guess I got them confused since they have very similar, if not identical, footage. There were shots of where the Smithsonian stores human remains. I also recall the footage of the Native Americans having that ceremony before reburying the remains. We watched the film in my Intro to Archaeology class. "Bones of Contention" was more about NAGPRA than anything. Sorry about the mistake!
Thanks for letting me know you have seen the entire film. In what class did you see the film? What did your class think about the way we handled the subject?
