The alternative wave had come and brought attention to the seattle scene: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains etc...all good bands but still superficial on a commercial wave whose greater accomplishment was dredging up a lot of other bands most people didnt get a chance to hear before. Before this NY had a lot of racial tensions and hardcore and rap depicted urban life for two different audiences and this songs release showed the greater acceptance of the two socially across racial boundaries.
