Like it or not, the Malays are the ethnic people of the land. And the quota system which was established after independence is justified on those ground: to equalize the playing field.

And FYI, even the Indians in Malaysia benefited from the system, because the government took strict measures to eradicate poverty ABSOLUTELY. It is the most prosperous country in the region after Singapore! And I think it is much less authoritarian and democratic than Singapore in terms of lifestyle.

The merits of the system can be justified given the past situation on the country. But whether it should remain now: that can be debated.
