7,000 people were laid off from Boeing just before that flight. These managers said it was "tough". I'd say, why didn't they lay off themselves, and not be allowed to Boeing premises and see how tough it would really feel as opposed to just saying it was "tough" to lay off the people who actually built the airplane.
