Jerry and the band did write most of the songs. Layne started writing whole songs about 3 albums in. Angry chairs was his biggest hit. You can tell a Layne written song by monotone bars (like a strum pattern) and incomplete sentencing in the verse and chorus. Nothing wrong with them but they are different. "God Am" is a perfect example.
I was at this show. It was a private party for Harley Davidson and Alice once again sounded amazing, but the crowd that night were a bunch of LA d-bags who didnt care about anything that was in front of them. Jerry got pissed and they left early. And I dont blame them what so ever.

Staley and Cantrell didn't get along well enough to continue being in AIC together. When Staley was still alive, AIC couldn't be a band without him, because fans didn't want it. But now that he's gone, they can get back to playing the big shows.
They're going to always talk about how much they "miss" Layne. If they didn't, the fans would turn their backs on the band.
I have to admit that the band without Layne is not really the same. But i think it is nice that we still can listen to the masterpieces he wrote in other than recordings.

It might be nice for Jerry to have the band back - even though his solo work was great - but without the drug related pain how can this new singer bring anything to the old and loved band? He may be able to hit the notes that Layne did - but to me this is a cover-band. It's the same now in my country with Paul Rodgers signing for Freddie Mercury with Queen. I sometimes just wish they would walk away when the lead singer dies.
To many other more talented singers out there to have duvall singing laynes parts......he does ok but rather see other artists singing these songs more.....

I think that you should be concentrating less on the look, and more on the music that this band is making.
This band works together no matter how they "look together".
Layne Staley is probably the one of the greatest vocalists ever so there is no use trying to replace him.
