99% of the bad things said about the AR-15/M16 family of weapons comes from people who have probably never fired one. They just repeat whatever crap they heard on the internet, no matter how incorrect. Is the M16 as reliable as the AK? No. Is the M16 as reliable as it's Western contemporaries? Yes. If the nation in question isn't using an AK, it's probably using one of Gene Stoner's designs or a modification there of. Except France, but of course, the FAMAS isn't well like by anyone.
"This weapon take care of you, if you take care of it". AK take care of you if you don't take care of it !!! Feel the difference. It fires, because non of the mud, sand, get into the gun, once when it does get, the game is over.
Yes that's what every soldier do when he has to fall on the ground (because of artillery or sniper firing )cover up the muzzle with some sticky shit. Larry, you proved yourself, that this is piece of shit for girls shooting at the range. If you want to live and survive in tough environment, better get some of the Ak's !!!
@schifty1 if you cant take care of your weapon then you probably cant take care of yourself..be good to your rifle and you wont get shot..thats what i beleive.even if i had an ak i would still take care of it the same way i do to my ar15
@JUKEBOXX1990 Yes, I would too. It is just the premise that sometimes you don't have the time to clean your weapon in battle, and it needs to work every time it is needed.
@schifty1 thats understandable but as long as you cleaned it the day before it will work even if you got it dirty still..this is 2012 not 1965 ar 15 m4 m16 are very reliable now a days
@hubjubjub point he was makeing is that it's stupid no one does that unless maybe it's a water landing then soldiers will tape the barrel other then that theres no time to do that so it's pointless.
@hubjubjub Ar-15 type rifles are still pritty damn beautiful and work well I trust the DI system if they switch to a piston it doesent matter much eather way it's still a nice rifle.
fag! untape the barrel. How is this a torture test? are you going to magically tape the barrel right before you fall down a hill and drop the weapon in a mud hole? probably not.
"in Vietnam soldiers put a condom on the barrell of an M16 to keep sand out" Okay, probably but soldiers from several different countries using several different types of rifles during several different wars also put condoms over the muzzles of their weapons to keep debris away. That is hardly unique to the M16. People who think that an AR system must be kept immaculately clean in order to function have never used an AR in real life IMO.
"It jams everytime," thought Walter Mitty. The people whom I know for a fact have used the M16/AR15 rifle tend to put forth the type of performance depicted in this video. The anonymous ones are the "jam everytime" crowd.
@m4rk37 thats instilled during basic now days being you get your rifle at week 2 now and it is with you at all times and for 19k you get your side arm as well
@esh325 im guessing you would also assume the safety is off the entire time in a firefight. you would be wrong and underestimate the discipline and training of the good soldiers in our infantry.
Tape the barrel, close the dust cover, dont chamber the round hm........OR just take another rifle like the AK74/AK10?, G36 or FN scar and don care for that shit.
M4 is just not made for real long 24/7 gritty combat, it just isnt, and this amount of caution for small amount of water/dust/mud proves it.
Sorry guys its not m4 hate just my opinion from what i see and read.
@PanterausfG I own a version of all the rifles you listed except for the G36 (with the melting handguard). All are very reliable combat weapons. The M4 is used in real long 24/7 gritty combat everyday with excellent results. It WAS made that way...period. A few other points, the dust cover is a nice addition, I wish my FN Mk16 had one. Vickers taped the barrel to prevent a mud obstruction, which can cause damage to the weapon or operator if fired...thats true for ALL the weapons you listed.
"The M4 is used in real long 24/7 gritty combat" no it isnt, all of the wars US is involved ATM are no where near the classic WW2 highly intensive conflicts, on one side you have insurgents and on the other side the US/coalition forces, which either eat cookies inside safe zones and bases, or go out to smash the other side with the full air support.
When you have the time to constantly babysit your rifle thats not a real war.
@PanterausfG Tell it to the USSOCOM operator who depends on his gas impingement M4 to take him through the fight in the mountains of Afghanistan, with no supply lines to speak of, or to the Filipino soldier who drags his M16 through tropical mud all day on his way to fight Moro guerrillas. Tell it to the Israelis, who have been using the M16 for years in Middle Eastern sand where the "ultra-reliable gas piston" FAL didn't make the cut.
Gas piston design is far more reliable and cleaner than gas impingement, simple fact, that doesnt mean that the rifle using that system will be super reliable.
M4 is neither. otherwise you would not see this guy on the video "panic" so much and do all the procedures which would put you one step behind your enemy.
US uses M4 the same reason why the Brits use SA80 , logistics, huge price of replacing , politics, national pride and industry lobbying.
@PanterausfG The gas piston design, from a mechanical standpoint, is certainly CLEANER, which has a positive effect on reliability under certain circumstances. It is also less stable, less accurate, more fragile, and much more difficult to repair. You seem to have missed the point where I said the DI M16 was chosen IN PREFERENCE to the piston FAL, regardless of whether either weapon is reliable (which they both are). The "panicked" procedures which you refer to are all sound safety measures
@PanterausfG which are entirely feasible in real combat, with the exception of the muzzle taping. That being said, you do NOT want to fire any weapon which has been immersed in a solid without first inspecting it. Physics dictate that if a lodged object withstands the pressure of the round's ignition, the explosion will be redirected towards you. To subject the rifle to such treatment is abusive and foolish, muzzle taped or no. The example above is simply to prove a point.
I agree with(or at least understand) most of your answers, the only thing that bothers me is the "no bullet in the chamber" how do you consider that combat feasible ?
Yeah in a case of a very, very, well trained and calm soldier, but in cqb or when the nerves go through the window i see it as the worst idea.
@PanterausfG The empty chamber, again, is for safety purposes. In a live fire situation, of course the weapon would be carried with a round in the chamber, but if dropped or immersed, the round could be damaged and made inoperable. Therefore, manually ejecting the round and cycling a new one from the mag is not a bad idea, and takes less time than pulling the trigger and THEN performing immediate action. Sure, you lose a round, but you gain time in return, which is oftentimes more important.
@PanterausfG That being said, for the big Army I wholeheartedly agree with your last statement. In my opinion, the M4 is a specialist weapon unsuited for the lowest common denominator, and as a general infantry rifle there are better options available, with the bureaucracy keeping them from the troops. However, in the hands of well trained, disciplined soldiers, the AR platform has proven itself a light, ergonomic precision tool that exceeds the capabilities of most other rifles today.
Getting to the melting handguard part on the g36, thats a myth, like the moving metal parts inside it, yeah you can melt it, you can also set on fire the ak-s wooden front hand grip from the number of rounds fired, proves nothing.
The dust cover door is nice nothing bad with it always a good idea to keep dirt outside as much as possible the aks fire selector does that, but when you have to close it and remove a round from the chamber plus tape the barrel for some small amount of tossing, hm....
Okay. Its clear you have no real combat experience, no grasp for what some of our soldiers do on a daily basis in the Middle East. The M4/M16 have served multiple countries over the last 50 years in all types of environments. I would like to challenge you to show any example of a military/firearms document that states that a muzzle obstruction is safe to fire. I have NEVER seen one. Your understanding of basic firearm safety rules is lacking.
No i dont have combat experience but that doesnt make me a moron (ive seen war as a kid btw, first hand ) we are not talking about pouring cement or mud, or even water into the barrel, of course that a clogged barrel will will have, as a result "failure of material" aka rifle blowing up in your face.
The point being, we dont see it in this video, what we see are a bunch of desperate measures meant to keep the m4 surgery like sterile for a "torture test".
And i am not trying to downplay the horrors of war, doesnt matter you get shot in the guts during a patrol on streets in a low intensity conflict or on the traditional frontline. What i am saying is, the conflict in IRAQ and Afghanistan are not AS HORRIBLE like they were in ww2, Vietnam or the Korean war, sounds cold, but it is.
If AK47(7.62) is so great why the Russian developed the AK74(5.45). Russians loves to copy US technologies. After couple of decades they realize the advantage of the 5.56 in the battle field so they come up with their own intermidiate round 5.45 on their AK74 on 1974.
I would love to see him do a video or series of videos on the Sig 556! Its about the only one I havent seen them do yet. I own 2 DD ARs and theyre great! Both have held up to everything I could throw at them and begged for more abuse. I wish they made a Vickers sling for the sig 556 Classic SWAT too!!!!!
I would love to see him do a video or series of videos on the Sig 556! Its about the only one I havent seen them do yet. I own 2 DD ARs and theyre great! Both have held up to everything I could throw at them and begged for more abuse.
As a Private Military Contractor using Less Lethal Weaponry, we take all our approved weapons and take them through similar torture test, without the rigging. I find what Larry to be stating TRUE and FACT on the M4 yet the torture test was rigged, as I can agree on. I will not be buying a Double Star in the near future!
isn't he rigging the test by not having a chambered round when he drops it, by taping off the barrel, by firing it after draining the water, by closing the dust cover?
None of these conditions will be met in the REAL WORLD if the rifle is dropped hard, or dropped in mud/water, or dropped and then picked up and fired in a combat scenario.
Proponents of this weapons platform like to ignore conditions that would cause their rifle to fail a test, then rationalize it's shortcomings.
@m1garand1943 watch the DD torture test where they drop the freakin thing out of a helicopter an blow it up IED style and tell me the LAV doesnt do good torture tests.., this was just a beginner level test is all., jeez, its a TV show highspeed !
@m1garand1943 Chambered round: agree, but if one were to pick up a submerged/dirty weapon, racking a fresh round into the chamber would likely be a decent idea. Taping off the barrel: agree for most conditions, but dedicated amphibious warfare units will often put "shoot-through" muzzle covers over their weapons at the beginning of engagement. Draining water: see chambered round argument. Closing dust cover: many train to close the dust cover after contact for this reason (i.e. Jason Falla).
@m1garand1943 Regardless, if you dump sand/mud down the barrel of an AK, it'll explode too. Even the simplest gun is a mechanically and chemically complex machine; shit happens, and all weapons can go down.
@kobuksonhwacha sure, but showing the steps required to recover from getting a barrel obstruction on both platforms would be a better test and a better show
@m1garand1943 Option 1: Unload and disassemble your weapon. Take a bore brush and snake it down your barrel, tapping out the obstruction. Option 2: Sling your primary and transition to your sidearm, which is what you really should be doing if your primary goes click for any reason and the enemy is within 50 yards. Option 3, and the most likely scenario: You're pulling the trigger so fast that you send a fresh round right into that obstruction, and the gun explodes in your hands.
@m1garand1943 Nope, and neither does my resume compare to his. I do, however, attempt to use reason combined with my own experiences when making decisions, and discussing immediate action drills is outside the realm of a test as discussed above. Though tinged with sarcasm, the procedures I described below are legitimate/realistic responses upon discovering an environmental stoppage in a weapon. Ultimately, these shows are fun to watch, but nothing replaces real world experience.
@m1garand1943 Mr. Vickers HAS become a bit of a corporate mascot, that I will admit. Does that invalidate his experience? You certainly have the right to disagree with him, and when you post your video showing your AK/Sig/other AR alternative going into the muck without muzzle protection, and then fired without proper safety measures taken, I will eat crow. However, until then, you contend with the voices of plenty of experienced individuals choosing to bet their lives on ARs.
just get 1 point bro.

@kobuksonhwacha is your name larry vickers?
