That's a tip right in the game about chords. You can hold both buttons at once and the higher note takes priority, as it says in game "just like a real guitar".

It means you never break the combo. SO there's no overstrumming or missing notes or anything that would break the combo. The thingy stays at 4x or higher the entire time.
