@dparkertex Whites took over America and called themselves Americans, they took over Australia and called themselves Australians, black people moved into Europe and started calling themselves Europeans.... what's the difference?

Well, that's right. We're all the same - we're humans. And it is interesting that in different countries people classify race differently. If your president Obama lived in S Africa, he'd technically be coloured cos of being mixed race :-)
@JohnfromPerth Yes John I'm South African. You woul;d be part of the white community. You probably would have been during apardheid too, unless there was something which led them to believe you were coloured. My surname is sort of Afrikaner, its of French decent originally. So you live in Perth? How is the racism situation in Australia these days?

@JohnfromPerth No you wouldn't. It's about cultural heritage/ background as well as skin colour. If you are white with olive skin, you would just be white. A good analogy is the term "latino" in the USA. Just cos you might have a dark skin, doesn't make you latino, its about your background too. But, in South Africa Barack Obama would not be considered black, he'd be coloured :-)
@JohnfromPerth No not anymore. In the "old days" that might have happened. But its about your cultural heritage/background too. If you are white with an olive complexion you won't be considered coloured.
touching a good point, African is just a geographic denomination. Bad news for "african americans", same thing with Native American. I prefer the canadian term First Nations
Hey, so has the rest of this documentary been completed yet? It sounds really interesting and I'd like to see it. But the more I google, the less information I seem to find.
Yes, the documentary is finished. It was produced for SABC 1, one of the main TV stations in South Africa, and it was broadcast across the African continent and I think in some other countries outside of Africa too. I personally dont have the original, that sits with the SABC. If you really do want to see it, the best thing is to get hold of the SABC, see if they can help you.
It was part of a series of 12 documentaries examining SA since the fall of Apartheid.
andrew, i think that's who posted this, this doc is very disturbing, i mean, how can you separate ppl based on skin tone? i mean, i guess i wouldn't be an arab, i would be coloured and that's just wrong on soo many levels! please tell me that this classification system doesn't exist anymore? say it ain't so, andy!
Hi Peanuts, the classification system technically doesn't exist anymore. However, research Apardheit. You will understand how it came about. I don't subscribe to this system, but it has left a mark on our history, which I dont think we will ever truley shake off. But today people choose to belong to the group they want to, and "coloured" is not just a skin colour anymore, it is a culture. SA is not the only country that classifies according to skin colour - USA, UK, Europe, etc.
so coloured is what you say a culture a race, huh? well so ok, wanita would be race coloured, nationality south african, right? so andy, the answer man, what would my classification be in south africa? would i still be known as an arab?? huh, betch can't answer that!
Yes, Wanita would be race coloured, nationality South African. In the 'old days' you would probably have been considered coloured. However, today if you emigrated to SA you be an Arab, since you would have a foreign passport.
but what if wanita were to come to the u.s. or what if she had been born in the States, then what would her race have been? it would not have been coloured, that's for sure!
We all speak different languages. Some use englis, some Afrikaans and other use "african languages". Also depending on what part of the country you live in. Most people can comminucatein 2-3 languages so you just speak what you are comfortable with.
i see that the white girl is always talking in afrikaans, so i was wondering what language does the south africans use in their daily conversations, is it afrikaans, english or an african language?
Smh whites took over everything..and now want to be call African..?..I think not.. *just my thoughts
