My riding instructor has two of them, brothers, and they are absolutely amazing! Made me fall in love with the breed and now I've been searching for one for over a year now. They are very quiet, they don't really like a lot of people messing with them but they'll come up and let you pet them a moment, then go off to the couch or recliner to sleep some or just sit and watch the goings-on. (: Very cool dogs!

@scotzgeezer Their speed, agility, disposition, and reputation are one of the best. The greyhounds/whippets are racing dogs, just like Ferraris are racing cars. If dogs were cars and cars were dogs, they would be Ferraris. In fact that's how I compare/contrast (almost always), I have a 2007 Nissan Altima that I refer to as being a Norwegian Elkhound(if it was a dog). But whippets/greyhounds are fast and nice, just like Ferraris. They are both thin, to be honest, just like the Ferraris are too.

@whiskywhippet There is quite a few theories surrounding this. Some say they have been bred with various terriers, some people even say they have been bred with the Pharaoh hound. I personally doubt that it was a terrier, just from the appearance and temperament of the whippet. But that's just my opinion...

Italian Greyhound were incorperated into rthe breed later, to add refinement.

Whippet racing, i.e. lure coursing, was a competition that could be enjoyed by common folk back in the day who could not afford to own/race Thoroughbred horses in England. That is why the Whippet was deemed 'The Poor Man's Racehorse.'

I grew up with whippets. Awesome pets ^.^ My currently diabetic service dog is a Whippet/Italian greyhound cross. What else would you want from a pet? Fast, quiet, calm inside the home, fun to play with in performance trials and a comfy bed warmer (Unless they plant a hip on your head.. OUCH!). Once can never have enough of the breed!

i had 2 male whippets and greyhounds and this past two yearsour family got 2 emale whippets and they are great one is skinny and tny and the other is meduim and fat. but they r awesome the best dogs anyone could wish for. i had major surgery last year when i was 12 and they helped me get throught it and so did my cat tooo.

Greyhounds, whippets and Lurchers basically all sitehounds are the best pets. I have two Lurchers and they are so clean and quiet in the home and so beautiful watch when they are running outside. My hounds out run all the ordinary humdrum dogs in the park. Its amazing!

once known as the poor mans racehorse, not racedog, (dog racing as we know it today wasnt really around, coursing was, but coursing is coursing) i know race dog makes more sense, but get your facts right, dont simplify for the idiots. go into why they were called that, the miners used to course rabbits with them for money, when money was scarce a bit of gambling to boost your income was a good thing. and the dog cost bugger all to keep, since it would catch rabbits which you could then feed him.

I have a Whippet and I must admit he's got a ton of personality. He's a great dog with the only drawback being that he must be kept on a leash. A small part of me misses being able to have him offleash like my former lab. But overall he's pretty cool.

Whippets were first bred in the North of England especially for catching rabbits. My whippet has caught thousands of rabbits over the years. 28 in one day was his personal best but he's also caught a fair few pheasants and a couple of partridge. A good whippet can feed a family.
