It's not exactly a new series; there are 5 "Densetsu no Stafi" games in Japan, starting with the first one for the GBA in 2002, which was originally slated for GBC in December 2000.
I knew that. It's sort of new. I helped build most of the English Wikipedia article about the series. Recently, I expanded the "Development" section in the article about the first game in the series. The reason why I'm asking if it will be a flop or a phenomenon, is that I'm wondering how successful it would be outside of Japan.
Well, NoA thought it was too difficult and probably would cause Mario to lose his popularity. There is an article Tomato of fobby period net wrote explaining why NoA won't release any of the MOTHER/EarthBound series, not even rereleasing MOTHER 2/SNES EarthBound for the Virtual Console nor in SSBB's Masterpiece section.

I like that style of cutscene/talking they chose. Very expressionative, different, and at times just funny :)

when i saw the commercial i thought it was a cheap kirby/pokemon game....u cannot say it looked like the gameplay of kirby

IMO this is like when Nintendo refused to sell the original Super Mario Bros. 2 in America 23 years ago: They misunderestimated us.
