go to a club called BroADS, it's an am dram club, we've been told we are doing Les Mis. so i thought i would check out some of the songs... and BLOODY hell... most of them are SO depressing! i like this one 'cause its pretty funny but getting ages 7 up to 16 singing opera? i cant even sing twinkle twinkle little bloody star in tune!
Nikki Blonsky is pretty damn good in this role.....the rest of the cast needs some work honestly....she's the standout of this entire song....the chorus blows
That's not a beret, that's a Phrygian cap. It's a French revolutionary symbol which represents the people's pursuit of liberty. It was common for the lower class (Les sans culottes) to wear as an expression of their love for la Patrie and everything it stood for.
Wow! She got much better subsequently, she's awful in this. Sounds too nice and posh. Monsieur Thenardier isn't great either! But one cannot deny that it is a brilliant song :)
Well it is all in English, they're hardly going to put on French accents. I understand that it could seem a bit strange but it just seems right! I can't imagine the Thenardiers singing in English, in any other accent haha
@TonyDuMont well you could say that about anyone in this musical...cos thery represent lower classes obv, why does valjean speak posh - hes middle/upper class duh
I know! It never makes sense...they wouldn't be speaking English anyway, but it is funny that it takes place in France, yet they're speaking not only English, but with a Cockney accent. Ha ha
nikki and the other guy did good, but the ensamble cast could of done better, they kinda seemed like they didnt care, or didnt wanna be there or somthing
A very scientific study I'm sure, not to mention ethical. I doubt you even went to high school. Regardless of your alleged excuses I and others remain offended by your attitude and racist remarks, no matter what the forum, of course you will be aware, expert as you are on all things, of exactly how patonising and stuck up you sound. Apparently it doesn't seem to matter to you though, with all due respect? yeah, right. Nasty little american idiot. Now go away.
People CHOOSE to be offended. You shouldn't speak on behalf of others.
Regardless, the experiment is OVER.
As you sit in judgment of what a horrible person I am, might I point out that I'm not American and never said I was. Are you not guilty of assumption yourself? Or does it not matter that you would generalise an entire country when you have a point to proove?
With all due respect I know all about Les Mis. I played Javert in high school. I'm also well aware of the countries that make up GB-I used to live there. Sure most won't appreciate this but I was interested in performing a social experiment on YT, to see if people would respond differently or less aggresively to an absolutely outrageous statement when placed in a forum regarding the arts versus one more likely to attract negative feedback anyways. Black people invented? Come on.
sweeney sister If I said you were from America you would presumably be rather pissed off......same for England/Scotland/N.Ireland/Wales, all different and proud people.
Les Miserables roughly translates as The Miserable Ones. Now perhaps you could take your ignorant and offensive comments and bad attitude elsewhere. There really is no need to be so rude and aggressive, especially when you are wrong. Oh your comment about black people "being invented" ; just appalling.
to sweeney sister Scotland is Scotland it is NOT part of England , the Scots will assure you of that one, Northern Ireland is Northern Ireland, part of the UK (ie, The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) but NOT part of Engalnd, check out the troubles of the last 30 odd years for why this particular comment is so offensive (I am from and still live in N. I . ) Ireland is an entirely different country with its own currency and government .(the Dail, pronounced doyle). .
To Sweeneysister Les Mis by Victor Hugo (also The Hunchback of Notredame) is French, set in France. Cockney accents are used to attempt to portray working class people. see following comment
The problem with this is that black people hadn't even been invented when this takes place. Even if they had been they certainly weren't in English pubs.
"Yeah English-that's were people from England and Scotland come from. Maybe you've heard of it? It's called a country. " Sweeneysister
. Les Mis is set in France, although obviously the musical is written in English for the benefit of British thetare goers, and I think Scottish people will take issue with you saying they are English!
I didn't say they were English! If you knew how to read! They speak English but they are still from England-part of which is called Scotland part of which is called Ireland too! Secondly if it's suppossed to be in France 1)Why do they have English accents 2)Miserables is an English word the last time I checked!
Scotland is NOT part of England you muppet. Its a country of it own that just happens to be part f the UK. Ireland isnt even part of the UK. But Northern Ireland is.
Also.. The show is about the FRENCH REVOLUTION. It was firstly staged in LONDON. The original London cast is world famous. Which is why its usually sang with an English-cockney accent.
And Its 'Les Miserables', which IS French. As the musical is based on a classic FRENCH book.
The only country north of Ireland is Iceland so I don't even know what that was suppossed to mean. Also...if the English word miserables is French...how do I know it's existence when I don't even speak French?
you seem happy to comment on everything else you know nothing about....miserables is a french word, most of the english language is derived from french or latin. also have a look at google maps re Ireland and Northern Ireland...all part of one land mass, but two different countries rather like England and Scotland actually.
The Cockney accent in Les Mis is the equivalent of a low-class French accent. Since the play is in English and not in French, how else are you going to portray the speech of the lower classes in France during that time? If you did it in French, no one would understand. Duh...
omg! really!!!!! good god! hahaha well i new she transferd to a dif school when she was in 10th grade i thought it was a privete school cause of the name

u know it wuld be sooo ofriggen awesome beyond words if her and shoshana bean did a concert together like the meg'an sho show but the nik and sho show
I don't like how they add "a" to the beginning of each line eg "a Master of the house" or "a kidney of a horse, a kidney of a cat, a fillin up the sausages with this and that" she was good as La Thenardiess though, I laughed.
I was in the school shows with her. She was in Les Mis and Sweeney Todd her Jr. year, and Kiss Me, Kate and Carmen her Sr. year. Our school does both a musical and an opera every year, and though Sweeney Todd isn't an opera, South did it anyway in place of the opera.
you can DO 2 shows a year, y'know. It's Spring and Winter. Winter they preform around janurary. Anyways, at my school, we did our winter regular show: The Foreigner, then right now Les Miserables. Opening night was ...yesterday? yea.
You can tell...two people are really into it and having a blast of a lifetime. The rest...are just for the ride???

I don't like how they add "a" to the beginning of each line eg "a Master of the house" or "a kidney of a horse, a kidney of a cat, a fillin up the sausages with this and that" she was good as La Thenardiess though, I laughed.

I heard on an interview that nikki wanted to Broadway with Zac Efron

NEVER GONNA HAPPEN!
Blonski, possibly, but Zac Efron could NEVER be on Broadway!
Son of a bitch could never do so much dancing and singing at the same time.

Opening night was ...yesterday? yea.

Is Nikki English?
When she sings sounds like a british accent =]
YeahItsPhilSoChill 4 years ago
No, she's not British.
It's a fake accent.
Because Les Mis takes place in England.
