In the game they're a flexible medium-spearman unit that work well with phalangists. They have javelins, so they can provide some supporting fire over the phalanx's heads, and have the Fast-Moving trait too, which makes them useful for outflanking and enveloping fixed enemy infantry. Historically, many were the most experienced, hardiest, oldest veterans of Alexander's army, though the game doesn't really reflect that well. I have a video coming where I use only hypaspists, and no phalangists.

You unlock the Historical battles by winning each preceding one.

well, there must be a bug in my game then...i have beat the 1st one, and NOT gotten Alexander killed, but i haven't unlocked the 2nd one. any ideas?

The only thing I can think of is the difficulty setting - perhaps you need to win the battles on the hardest setting, and you had it on the intermediate setting? This is just a guess.
