  • You rev that 22re perty high mine has never seen above 4 grand

  • Duh, it's a big four cylinder SOHC engine. Of course it's not gonne rev out well. What it lacks in revs it makes up for with low down torque..

  • haha it chirped 3rd. dont feel bad man most hondas wont even chirp first lol

  • @Jacksonkellyfreak

    hahahahaa.....Dumb-Ass

  • Turbo it! :D

  • I agree with everyone else, you should be liking the 22re motor more. It produces a lot of torque and is extremely reliable. I bought a 85 GTS with 240000 miles on it and it still runs really strong with no reliability issues. I would say its one of the best motors Toyota has ever made.

  • 22r and 22re are some of the best engines ever built. You can't beat the reliability.

  • damn, thats a powerful motor

  • I run time attack with mine. swapping out for the 22ret turbo to be competitve with the big boys

  • hey can you send me a pic to where the transmission lube line goes in to the trany plz.

  • i have an 84 with the 22R-E. its a nice torquey beast. its so hard to find parts here in TX.

  • i have the 93 model and am considering an engine swap its done over 180,000 km what would be the ideal replacement, bearing in mind i need more power and higher compression ratio plz help me out

  • Their design won't let you redline it. The head with it's swirl port design won't let the engine breath at high rpm. That's why I am building one with a 20r head and, probably, r1 motorcycle carburators.

  • @Renatubie exactly, this engine can rev above 6500RPM for sure, but you need to change the camshaft, another carburator bla bla bla...I guess you need a engine overhoul

  • @Sengeto This one I was talking about is supposed to rev up to 7500 RPM. Dual Weber 45's, LCE Pro-header, 20R Head, and 278-0F Schneider cam.

  • actually the 22re its one of the best engines form toyota , they have a lot of torque, do yourself a favor and contact LC Engineering , and get a camshaft , Weber car set up and head , or better yet get a whole engine from them , the got everything for 20R to 22RE engines , you wont regret it. Best bang for the buck!!!!

  • i have a 22re with about 260k, is it okay to bring it past 5000 rpm's? i have no tach so i just listen and feel the motor. i want to install one on the dash just for now and maybe some time get the full guage cluster installed. but i know with the long stroke you dont want to bring the r's to high but what's to high? any advice is greatly appreciated

  • @rjallenbach just be easy on the engine. what do you do with your truck?

  • @wheeler8801 its only a 2wd so i dont do heavy off roading, but i do enjoy getting her dirty time to time. its mostly a comuter for work or hauling miscellaneous things. i run good 5-30 oil, change it every 3k and keep the motor clean

  • ive taken mine to redline a few times, just gotta let it go....

  • 22R's are BULLET PROOF!!

  • @evek2345 Yeah but the oil rings in them aren't and when one breaks, you get oil into the piston shaft(?) and start burning oil, and causing a bearing to fail and having to rebuild the engine/getanewengine.

  • i agree with ryott0

    and on another note

its a 22re it aint supposed to go fast! but also the power band is like....2200-5k so you got some room to work with. i can get my celica to 5700 i just choose not too!!

race it, and it will break!

  • what a fucking idiot...little does he know that the 22re is the best engine toyota has made and the best 4 banger

  • You shift too early. Stand on it! That's sucks to see you revving that great engine so slow.

  • one thing if you have this take off the a/c compressor and the power steering and slap on bolt-ons and it will run like hell lmao.. 22re engines last forever !..

  • yea that engine isnt a very good redliner. though it can take a redline it has trouble getting there. i found a simple cam upgrade and a header really helps these engines.

  • plus the good ol 5 speed standard no wonder its gutless its auto, toyotas run their hardest in the high rpm. you gotta rev em out.

  • this engine isn't made to redline, it's made for lower end torque....

  • you mean the tranny isint meant to red line. the power band on my 22r (carbed) is 2500 to 4000 rpm but it just wont stop until i take mah foot off it will do 6000 rpm no prob, but it has a cam and headers and blah blah. and these engines have unbelieveble tourqe at 6000 rpm meybe only 120 hp but about 180-190 ftlbs

  • when you're driving on a trail, if you're at 6000 rpm you aren't doing it right.

  • 6000 rpm is my red line thats where i either shift or i back off. on the trails its 4 low or no go and it gets to 6000rpm really easy in 4 low so what ever you say my man.

  • not JUST 22re, 22r's are just as good, plus nothing like the classic carbs to make y'all feel better :p

  • You think that's slow ?? You should try driving my 86 Toyota Camper w/ 22-RE, and an Automatic.

    That's Slow. It's 6600 Lbs loaded.

They may be wimpy by today's standards, but they are Tough as NAILS. I'd love to see some of the modern engines stand up to the abuse that a 22-RE can.

  • 22re is the best 4 banger i have ever seen yet

  • 2.3l Fords are just as good, still slow, but damn reliable

  • Yeah, that's another tough one. About as sophisticated as a hammer, with about as many weak points. You just grab it and use it, use it, use it - great engine.

  • The only thing that i have ever found wrong with the 2.3 is the valve clatter, the 22re, the fuel injection makes a racket often

  • You should let your motor warm up before driving it hard.

  • this is a toyota take it to the redline is the only way you will make power

  • duh its called torque

  • all of you doubting this car you all have no fucking clue .... i have an 85 celica gts that rips just like the one in video it looks slow but my car shits and gets .....its just a toyota thing

  • video of that junk

  • first off thats pretty damn fast for the 22re do u have any performance parts on it. i have a 1 ton yota and i can barely chirp second.

  • Yeah really isnt bad for a SOHC 4 cylinder imo.

  • what do you expect for a single slammer

  • that is relatively slow but i own a fiero that safely reves to only 3 and half

  • difference between 22r and 22re, mines about same performance, ive upgraded it with knn cold air intake as well lol, and theres a long list of shit im gonna do!

  • I love my 83 GT-S, but I have to say, after slight mods, it runs the same. It takes money to make an RA6x celica with a 22RE fast. It gets up and goes, but they make minivans now with twice the horsepower, Bob Dylan once stated, "The times, they are a changin." Well, the cars 25 years old, fuel injection comes standard in EVERYTHING in the 21st century.

  • DOHC is coming standard too now, and a little bit ago they where putting DOHC stickers on all of the DOHC cars.

  • man theres no way its that slow i have a 22r motor and they will run faster than that

  • shit, mine tops out 6200rpm

  • Things to look into: O2 sensor, TPS adjustment, fuel injectors (if you got em) Otherwise sounds pretty good concidering age.

  • Hey, give it some credit it did chirp 1st 2nd and 3rd gears. The thing is still a pig though, definatley need some mods to make the good ol' celica scream.

  • anybody notice his car is COLD?

  • The gauge is a little erratic...it was fully warmed up.

  • just going by what i see

  • my suggestion would be check out the cat.... if you haven't replaced it... odds are it's about time.

  • Man, I've got an '85 Celica w/ the 22re motor and mine's nowhere near that slow. Besides, it's a torquy low-end motor; it's not designed to be optimum at the redline. It's a great, bulletproof engine, and I've had my Celica up past 110 with no problems

  • haha...man...it's my car, it's got three pedals and I shifted early because the engine just stops making power after about 4500RPM. The engine sucks...it had it's day in old trucks.

  • pure PWNage malczuk

  • get a manual... stop bashing the motor... its a good motor, just automatic is for pussies who dont wanna shift

  • umm..it is a manual, and the 22re is a great tractor engine.

  • no in the video it shifts early cuz its automatic... if it was manual u can choose where u want to shift...

  • dude it is a manual what u talking about?? pause the video at 7 sec then tell me it's still automatic.

  • yepp, 22re's are slow... u need to go with a 3.0LV6 :P

  • my 22re in my toyota pickup 2wd single cab stock with jus a exhaust system i've had it to over 120.

  • Man the 22re is not that bad its just the 22re is a low torque motor not a high reving hp motor. Befor I put my 18r race mote in my 85 celica I got my built 22re to over 130

  • lol my 22re in my 85 celica gts gets up to 105mph hahaha.. but ima bout 2 swap it out for a 7mgte in like 2 months

  • Top speed over a 4500 mile trip for my 22re powered '93 with a solid axle swap and 34 inch swampers was 84 mph over a 5 mile long 6% downgrade in the Rocky Mountains. It actually slowed down when I shifted from 4th to overdrive. I think you're doing just fine.
