Sterling Sharpe's WR contemporaries were the following: Jerry Rice, Michael Irvin, Cris Carter, Andre Rison. And incredible class of receivers. And the only receiver during Sharpe's career (1988-1994) who might have been more dominant was Jerry Rice -- the greatest WR of all-time. Clearly, Sterling Sharpe belongs in the HOF.
@swiftdan8 you must be a child...there was a point in time where people had serious arguments about who was better, Sterling Sharpe or Jerry Rice...I am a fan of Chad, however, he is not of Sharpe's level.
@swiftdan8 r u crazy. Sterling Sharpe Led NFL in receptions in 1989, 1992, and 1993 also Led NFL in receiving TDs in 1992 and 1994. He set the receptions record twice he was the first player to have back2back 100 reception years. But most important consecutive games with at least 4 receptions: 34 he brought it every game. He would have made it to the hall of fame and is in consideration and chad will never have that honor.
@kimv020887 Has there been ANY discussion of Sterling even being a finalist? I know that it's tougher for the more recent wr's to get into the HOF since the league became overly dependent on the passing game (circa 1994) due to the continual "declawing" of the defenses since 1978, but Sterling was a complete football player, NOT just just an exceptional wr. He also avg. more yds. per game than any Packers' player.
That was awesome that Shannon gave Sterling his first (of three) Super Bowl rings- brotherly love right there. Sterling definitely would've nabbed at least one if he'd stayed healthy- and Super Bowl 32 would've had a little extra spark as well!
@GrassValleyGreg well GrassValleyGreg lets just hope the NFL inducts both brothers this year alongside Jerome Bettis, Curtis Martin, Terrell Davis, etc.
@GrassValleyGreg Ditto. I HATE Shannon but that was a 100% act of love. Beautiful gesture. I also think that if Wolf would've drafted DE/Brackens instead of T/Michels in '96 (as he was supposed to, per his Bio), THAT would've helped as well, lol. Also, if Holmgren didn't abandon the run-game in the 4th quarter of the GB/DEN SB (Typical Holmgren for years.), it would've helped cos Levens was averaging 5yds a clip & Denver was blitzing all of the time & getting through too. I'm still pissed!
@kimv020887 I agree with you! People forget that Sterling became the first player in the history of the NFL to have consecutive seasons of 100 plus catches. Shannon was the first tight-end in the history of the NFL to reach the 10,000-yard mark. Both have broken and set many NFL records that have been overlooked!
@commerceskate LMAO Stop it. You must be a young ass kid or something..go look at the stats. 5x probowler and 5x All-Pro. Tied wit Jerry RIce for having 4tds in a game. Sharpe was the ORIGINAL beast.
@onblock7 ha, i find it hilarious my comment is marked as spam. its a joke. recently brandon marshall said in a post game interview that sterling did not deserve to be in the hall of fame, i was just making fun of brandon for saying that haha.
@commerceskate Yeah I saw he said that! I knew there was some relation there for your comment, just didn't know if you were serious or not. I find it funny he said that though since Sterling is better or was better than he will ever be (Stats passed up or not), Sterling was top 2 in his prime!
sterling was the best he only played seven years and he only had brett favre for 2 years he made green bays terrible quarterbacks decent. if he played with brett favre his whole career or someone else he would have been first ballot hall of famer.
@jahpeople94 Sharpe was lethargic as a rookie in '88 and Green Bay brass had doubts about their #1 pick. But he shined in '89 with a healthy Don Majkowski throwing to him. Had the Majik man been able to stay healthy, Sharpe's numbers would have been even more spectacular in '90 and '91.
It's realy too bad that Sterling had to retire early due to his injury! He got that stinger in the neck, If I recall correctly, They told him that he could wind up getting crippled if he were to get hit in a certain way! Sterling is & always will be one of my most fav. players of all time!
As a Cowboys fan, Sterling Sharpe was fun to watch. He could run around you or over you. If his career was not cut short, I honestly believe that he would have held a lot of receiving records as well as winning a couple of Super Bowls. I hope he makes it to the HOF.
As a Bear fan I gotta admit, Sterling Sharpe was the beast of beasts at WR. He's an even better Andre Johnson, Anquan Boldin, etc...Sharpe and Rice were the best and if his career wasn't cut short, I have no doubt he would have been in that argument.
But to the cheeseheads out there dont forget, Sharpe is FROM Chicago AND a legit Bear fan ;-)

Why are you comparing Sterling to Johnson and Boldin? For one, Johnson and Boldin's careers aren't even over yet and they are playing in a different era. If you want to compare Sterling to anyone, do it with players like Rice, Carter, Irvin, Reed etc,

@ redrum - ha, I'm not exactly a "Cheesehead" (whom you are trying to provoke, apparently ;-) ), but as a fellow Georgian I've got serious questions as to just how much of a *true* Chicagoan Sterling is. Sterling may have been born in Chicago, but IIRC he moved to Georgia at an early age. (You can sometimes hear the Southern accent when he speaks.) I wonder if he even remembers living in Chicago?
I agree with all yall.....I knew I wasn't the only one to remember how great dude was.....That team had Reggie White & Brett Favre ,and I was watching HBO's "Inside The NFL" , when I heard nfl films commentator Harry Kalas I think it was, say that the teams best player at that time was , you guessed it Sterling Sharpe.....what's taking him so long to get to the hall of fame?
who am i ? basically i catch the ball, i catch the ball, I............CATCH... THE BALL! gee i'm starting to sound like a broken record, that's because STERLING SHARPE DID BREAK RECORDS!! my all-time favorite player. in his era ONLY rice was better! his game was as sweet as his game! MR. STERLING SHARPE!
I think he was the best ever. Him and Rice had the same stats when they played together and, at that point, Joe Montana was a better QB than Favre. In 1992, he led the league in receptions, receiving touchdowns, and receiving yards. Rice was 3rd in those categories with Andre Rison 2nd.

I was just thinking about why Sterling's relatively "forgotten" - a lot of it had to do w/ the era of Packers football in which he played:
~His career took place when Packers were in a "lull" of national popularity - pre-Favre, or before Favre became a superstar.
~Because Packers were in this "lull" - Sharpe didn't get on national or primetime t.v. that much - like the Jerry Rices, Michael Irvins, or even *Shannon* Sharpes. (contd.)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
(contd.)
~Only after Sharpe's retirement did the Packers start getting more national t.v. exposure - of course he had been retired for about two years by the time the Pack won SB XXXI
~Unfortunately for Sharpe, he was a superbly-talented receiver who spent most of his career playing for the Packers during their "backwater", "Siberia of the NFL" years. He wasn't on the glamor teams like Rice or Irvin, & didn't get the national exposure that a lot of greats get.
