N97 in 1st months aftter launch got crappy firmware and lacked app so its only strenght was really ergonomic \keyboard and design, but nowdays its no mroe true. Nokia made AWESOME improvements to this phone and its one of best on market nowdays, unmatched keyboard ergonomy, system which no one would guess is run on symbian and ngage support. Check for yourself

@DareKGenesis try visiting nokia beta labs, use updater from nokia site and check if your service provider uses latest firmware, try things like n-desk or spb mobile shell . If your phone is slow just do hard reset, delete all apps you dont need that instal on phone main memory and set default install dir to mass memory and not phone memory.

@DareKGenesis I`ve used my n97 mini with opera and it wasnt running out of memory even with few tabs open in browser unless they were flash heavy - performance with things like 3d photo browser from beta labs was awesome too, even hundreads of photos didnt make it slow down, running browser, some, media gallery in background and some other things wasnt problem either. Just make sure you dont put some bugged widgets on main screen. If you keep phone memory disk free phone will be really smooth.

Great bit of kit - just make sure to UPDATE IT! makes lot of difference. One of the things i really like is the great 5mp camera and video - very good! Another app I like is the transmitter that enables me to play my music from the N97 through my car radio - Great!

Most networks take their time rolling out their updates so that they put in their own content and apps to be installed into your nokia phone and lock others away..

The only way to get the original update from nokia is to debrand your phone, which is easy to do but can invalidate your warranty if problems occur.

Debranding is easy all you need is to download Nemesis Service Suite. I did this with my N95 8GB and not only did it work first time, made the phone faster but perform better.

lol. *.exe files is not for nokia systems, you should search for *.sis, *.jar, *.jad, *.sisx, *.gw or similar, otherwise *.exe is possible to use with nokia true dosbax PC emulator.

Will they add smooth rotation theme effect also? Because if you have to turn on the theme effect in order to activate the kinetic scrolling, and the rotation (fade out and fade in) is still the same, the slow speed of rotation will continue to annoy you. I always turn the theme effect off because of that reason, too.

firmware is the software that tells the hardware (the phone) what to do and how to act. It's basically the base programming that controls everything. Updating firmware can fix bugs and add new features. On the N97, you can update it either from the phone itself via the SW application or connect it to a PC and use the software suite that comes with it.

You can't find the SW application? Its in the "applications" menu for me. If you can't use that/find it then use the Ovi software suite that came on the CD with the phone. That can update the firmware just as easily.

No, i can find it but i cant update. I downloaded the rest, ngage, ovi contacts, bla bla. But the phone update starts "processing" and then just stops. Ive downloaded the "software update" program on my computer, but it doesnt see the phone. Neither does the pc suite that i got with the phone. Or the pc suite from nokia beta labs. It doesnt see it in pc suite mode at all. I can work in mass storage just fine

The catch is there are rumors that this new firmware is not available in all areas. Thats why you need to unbrand your phone. :)

Yes my nokia man said something like that nokia n97-2 has no optic cover, it's a slim version and it has no d-pad on the left of the keyboard, this firmware is for the n97 in general the capacities are the same so the guy in the video with numbers 1 and 2 just separates the phones, anyway the slim version is not released yet at least to my country but even if it does i still prefer d-pad and lens cover even if the phone is bigger don't care i love that phone i sold my iphone 3g to get it!

I dont have one but I think its like this: there is n97 and n97 slim; They are two different phones. Then there is two different firmwares. I think any n97 and n97 slim can use this new firmware.

the difference is the firmware in the phones. What he meant by N97-1 is like a SAMPLE-1 and N97-2 is like a SAMPLE-2. They have different software on it but same type of N97.
