One thing that Hoss doesn't talk about is actually WATERING the boxes. The system mentioned by GlobalBucket would be perfect for this field type production.
Wow, that's outstanding. What is the size of your place there? I love the idea and do you compost and re-use the soil year after year? Why chemicals? Why not organic there?
Not really, the box has a water resevoir in the bottom that will provide water to the plants. i have several hundred in a planting and have set up an automatic refill line to the boxes on a timer. Very easy, virtually maintenance free.
I live in Oregon, we really dont get citrus plants, there is a dwarf lemon & orange free that doesnt get bigger than about 5 ft tall.. and they can be brought in during the coler weather and brought out with these... and the thought of having oranges in my living room.. heh.
I have blueberries growing with great success in the Earthbox. Use Pine Bark mixed with coconut coir, add sulfur to adjust the pH and you are good to go.
Excellent growing system, I have several hundred in production, Citrus, Blueberries, Peaches, Tomato's, Peppers. All are doing very well. Water consumption is minimal. Very pleased with the results. The video is very informative and without a doubt cutting edge in agriculture.
The cover helps control weeds and evaporation. The reservoir system is much more efficient than watering with a hose (uses much less water) and the full season fertilizer makes the system carefree. Even a brown thumb like me can get a great harvest with this system. This is the first (and only) thing I ever bought from a mailed flyer, but it works. I'm getting the auto watering system this year so I won't have to touch it after planting except to harvest. My schedule is crazy but I can do this.
Whats special about the earth box?... It looks like a square pot with a plastic cover... you put soil and fertilizer in the pot.. and you have your cover on top; or am i missing something?
The Earthbox has a water resevoir in the bottom, that allows the water to wick up into the soil as the plants need it, keeping the optimum level of moisture in the box. The cover keeps your fertilizer from leaching out into the ground outside the box and is thus more efficient.
I have 4 earth boxes. I all ready got the organic soil now i just need the organic fertilizer. Im gonna do one box of tomatoes, one box egg plant, one box hot peepers (half cayanne? half habanero)
ant the last box will be a small bush size blue berry plant.I was thinkin about getting mericle grow organic fertilzer for the boxes. Its a dry granular fertizler I thinl will work weel with the earth box, but its about 3 times the price of the regular stuff. I can afford it.
I liked your video very much.

what's the initial start up cost on an acre of those things?? arent they like $30 bucks each?
Firefly804 1 year ago
Yeah, if you buy 1 at a time. I imagine there was a deal struck where they get them WAY cheaper than what you can get them for at retail.

Yeah growing them in a box,so the soil under em is what I was talking about.
pdsavage 2 years ago
Yes, the soil underneath them is fine. They grow acres and acres of cherry tomatoes in it.
LannyBirch 2 years ago
The ground under the box looks bad.
If they do permaculture they would fix the soil and feed lots of people.
pdsavage 2 years ago
The soil there is fine. They've been growing tomatoes there forever.

That must be a royal pain to water.
