  • wtf is up with the prop 8 videos?

  • What's with all the religious commentary? This is a genealogy video. I can't imagine I'm the only atheist who is interested in researching my family tree.

  • @SanTelmo1981 i with you bro

  • I had missionaries come to my door today and all they wanted to talk about was Joseph Smith. I know you don't worship him but why all the talk about him?

  • That eclipses a previous high of about 30,000 set last September, said Elder Ed Lunt who, with his wife, Sister Penney Lunt, serves as a Church missionary coordinating 58 volunteers who come to the prison to supervise and help the inmates who use the family history center.

  • Without benefit of Internet access, a privilege denied the prison inmates, the center's patrons last month extracted some 146,000 names as part of the FamilySearch indexing project whereby volunteers around the world digitize microfilmed records to make them accessible to enthusiasts researching their genealogical information via personal computers.

  • Is this video available in Spanish??

  • If you take the analogy of the tree being the Church, Jesus planted the tree 2000 years ago, and when you are Baptized you become a member of Jesus' family. That's a family tree I like being apart of.

  • OK...please- believe what you may. Love one another and let God do the judging.

This video is about genealogy, not each other's short comings.

  • You people disgust me...This is a video on family history and genealogy, which faith has nothing to do with. Yes, maybe your great grandparents were Catholic, MORmon, Protestant, Jewish, Islamic, or some other religion, but does that really matter? Will arguing over the internet about which one is right really solve anything? Why can't you just enjoy genealogy and why is there one person here trying to discourage a perfectly healthy and nice hobby like genealogy because of text in the Bible?

  • I am not a Mormon myself, but of Catholic and Protestant origin, but my aunt is a converted Jehovah's Witness. To me the religious debates don't figure much and I'm just immensely grateful to LDS for their contributions to genealogy.

  • Which are you, Protestant or Catholic? You can't be both. Either you're born again or not. All roads don't lead to heaven, you know.

  • I'm sorry I didn't specify. In faith, I've decided I'm an agnostic but in terms of my ancestor and parents faiths, they were a mixture of Protestants and Catholicd.

  • missmajesty,

So, you're not sure if there is a God? You're not sure what religion is correct? What is holding you back from allowing Jesus to save you? just curious

I was agnostic for about 15 yrs after being raised in and leaving Mormonism. I'm now Christian.

  • There are many things in Protestantism and Catholicism that I find questionable. There was a period when I was a fierce atheist but now I've realized it's better to acknowledge that although my sense of logic does not allow me to have the absolute faith that I feel is required to be a complete Christian is to acknowledge that there are things out there beyond my understanding and sometimes it's better not to try to understand.

  • I, too, had many questions before becoming a Christian. For me, I wanted to get to the bottom of it all and know for sure what religion is true. I thought, if hell is real, I don't want to go there, so I really wanted those questions answered and one by one, God showed me. It takes a step of faith.

    Be encouraged with these verses...

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge..Prov 1:7

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom...Psalm 111:10

  • Yes, many of the stories in the Bible teach valuable LESSONS like Jesus' treatment of the poor. But one must remember, that the newest story in the Bible is about 2000 years old. Many of the stories are just stories trying to explain origins and human behavior. They were written by a non-scientific people and they should be treated as folklore, not truth and not fact. I respect those Christians who take valuable lessons from the Bible, not those who take it literally.

  • You're believing lies from the enemy. That's right...lies.

God's Word is truth. John 17:17

    That's where it's at!

    Believe it or not.

  • Haha you are a mindless sheep following whatever the Papal authorities tell you to think. I will have fun trying to find true enlightment and purpose in life, not on what a politically inspired, 2000 year-old book tells me what to think. I have read the Bible many times. I go to a Catholic high school (unfortunately) and am forced to read it during class every single day.

  • I'm not Catholic or Mormon. They are man-based religions...follow doctrines of men.

I have received God's free gift of salvation. I'm not trying to merit my way to heaven or earn favor with God by trying to be a good person like Catholics and Mormons do.

We all fall short. We have all sinned. God made a way to be forgiven and saved from hell. Repent and believe the gospel...that Jesus died on the cross and rose again. Believe in your heart and confess that he is Lord and He will save you!

  • When you start to pick and choose which parts of the Bible are literal and which parts aren't, you leave the door open to be led astray. God's word is authoritive and all scripture is...

    read it..

    2 Tim 3:15-17

  • Have fun wasting your life believing in a man that died 2000 years ago who claimed to be a God...Have fun believing that every single person on Earth is the descendant of a man and woman named Adam and Eve who were tricked by a snake (wtf) and ate a fruit which made them smart (wtf again...) Enjoy believing authority like the Pope that is so corrupt and stupid themselves that they are able to lead this stupid mess of a people which we call society.

  • @manmythlegend12 you forgot the belief of a fiery place under us with a monster ready to burn us for eternity, and a "holy ghost" in the sky living in the clouds intervening in our lives as we live. who the fuck writes this shit? oh yeah ignorant, paranoid, superstitious, people that lived long ago who could not explain life so they made a story. 2010 and there's still followers... hmmm shows a lot about our society, i believe evolution will leave them behind.

  • Christians have used the Bible to kill millions of people during events like the Crusades and Inquisition. Is this really what your "God" wants? The Catholic Church prosecuted anyone that brought up scientific ideas that may go against the Bible's teachings. Galileo was put under house arrest for his entire life because he said that he thought the Earth revolved around the Sun...Not only is many of the "scientific" verses in the Bible wrong, science can disprove most of the Old Testament.

  • Right now in this comment page, you are using the Bible to put down people. If people want to research their family history, you have no right to tell them that it is wrong based on your all Holy, all powerful Bible (sarcasm). Christianity has done nothing but put whole groups of people down and cause scientific backwardness.

  • Family genealogy is wonderful and is my biggest hobby and pastime. However, I do not believe in the LDS doctrine. If a person doesn't accept Christ while he's alive on Earth, he will not get a second chance after he dies. I have found it is almost impossible to convert a Mormon or Jehovah's Witness to the true Christ. They are so blind and misled. Best thing to do with them is pray for their salvation and not to argue with them.

  • I believe that the truth of the gospel has been restored upon the earth today. I respect your opinion, although I know little about your religion. But thats ok because I like that you live upon faith. I feel that god created the earth so that we could return to live with him again in heaven, and he was merciful. That's why Christ was born, wasn't it? I believe those who didn't get to know him will have a second chance in the next realm, or during the millennium. Its also good to know ancestors.

  • I'm a Christian first, Southern Baptist second. We believe salvation is through Christ only. He shed His blood that we may be saved, joseph smith did nothing to pay our sin debt. he can't give us salvation & eternal life. It is a mockery of Jesus to say that joseph smith or anyone else can wash away our sins. How do you deal with the sin problem? The Bible also says it is appointed man once to die then the judgment. NO SECOND CHANCE. .

  • And another thing, if Mormonism is a restoration of original Christianity they would need to demonstrate that LDS doctrines were originally in the Bible but later deleted. However, there is no manuscript evidence of revisions of the New Testament that eliminated cardinal doctrines. Also, the scripture quotes in the writings of the early church fathers show that there were no doctrinal changes.

You're following another gospel. God sternly warns against this. Galatians 1:8

  • We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost. We do not worship his follower, Joseph smith. That would completely go against the lord's teachings. We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.

  • Also We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth. We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God. We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God

  • Obedience to the laws can't save you from hell. In fact, Christ becomes of no effect to those who try to gain eternal life by keeping laws. See Romans 3:20, Galatians 2:21, 3:24, Ephesians 2:8-9.

The LDS bring ANOTHER GOSPEL than the one taught in the Bible, so Mormons are doomed if they follow it.

  • These are laws and ordinances that we belief came through Christ himself; That we are obeying the true word of the master himself. These laws include things such as repentance, baptisms, so on and so forth. These require the lords hands and would otherwise be of no substantial value. Through these sacred things that the lord placed here for our benefits, only good blessings could possibly come forth, so long as we follow his good true words.

  • Now, nevertheless, on the other hand, the law oftentimes goes against the lords loving principles. What we follow isn't necessarily the "law" but rather precepts, and we believe that we are subject to the law as long as the law doesn't go against the good gospel teachings. The lord was crucified on the cross because what the law saw as just. Do you see us doing this? See here, I say never.

  • @cassiekarina LOL!

  • @cassiekarina why is it that I've always been told that Joseph smith is the one that gives hie okay to get into heaven?

  • Why is discovering your family history so important to Mormons?

  • Love the video!

  • Actually, I'm a rejected clone from a top-secret government project.

  • great video, thank you !

  • Why do Christians spend all this time complaining about what other people spend their time on?

  • Is it not more foolish, unprofitable and vain to not only take the bible out of context, but to also then go and spread that falsehood as the word of god. Unless you hadn't noticed, even the writers of the gospels indulge in geneology - Matthew 1:1-17 and Luke 3:23-38.

Personally, as a christian, I think this video is excellent, and will hopefully will encourage youngsters to get involved in an eduacational, enriching and often humbling pastime.

  • Yeah, the geneology of Jesus, not finding out who all their dead relatives are so they can go get baptized for them. Unprofitable and vain. People need to make their choice while they are on earth. There's no second chances, LDS. Make the choice before it's too late.

    Jesus or Joseph Smith?

  • If Christianity is about profit, I'm glad I'm not. But you may want to review Mathew 7.

  • What the video "Judging verses Discerning, Is There A Difference?" by carpentersdaughter2

    You're misusing Matt 7, LDS.

  • "Misused" perfectly describes what you have done to the Bible. And bashing anyone's religion, beliefs, or interests (LDS or otherwise) is not Christian. Some of the most dedicated genealogists I know have no religious preference - they're just interested in their heritage. If you find genealogy so offensive, why are spending your time watching family history videos on YouTube? I don't think God intended all to have the same interests, but he did intend all to be kind to one another.

  • Bashing anyone's religion, beliefs, or interests (LDS or otherwise) is not Christian?

Try listening to Jesus, who is NOT tolerant of false gospels. Do a Bible study. Contend for the faith.

    Jude 1:3

    1 Timothy 6:12

    2 Corinthians 10:3-5

    Gal 1:6-9

You're trusting Joseph Smith's doctrine and what the LDS church teaches over the Bible. It's sad.

  • There is a big difference between contending and being contentious. Proverbs 13:10

    Proverbs 18:6

What's sad is twisting the words of the Bible to fit your own prejudice.

  • Do the LDS bring something different to the table than what Jesus and the original 12 did? Yes.

Where's the twisting? 1 Cor 15 tells us what gospel to receive. Gal 1:6-9 warns us of people who bring another gospel.

It says what is says. Pretty simple. I guess it just comes down to whether or not you trust the Bible.

  • If I was contending about something insignificant, like who won the baseball game last night, I could see where you might apply Prov 13:10.

However, when it comes to a person's salvation, "For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" 1 Tim 2:3-5

  • My last comment - I doubt that anything I say will soften your heart. Your words tell me you've not really studied LDS doctrine yourself, or you would know that your statements are inaccurate. LDS strongly believe 1 Tim 2:3-5, as well as what Jesus and the 12 did. An honest, open-minded conversation with an active LDS would show you that your animosity is unfounded. If you want to know what LDS really believe, ask an LDS, not an anti-LDS, The same applies to Cathoiics, Baptists, or whatever.

  • I was LDS for 10 years. There's a big difference between the Mormon church and being a Christian. You're into something that is not of God. Sorry. It's the truth.

Read 1 Cor 15 again. It tells us what gospel to receive. Then read Gal 1:6-9 again. It warns us of people who bring another gospel and what God thinks of it.

  • I was not going to continue with this since it's pointless, but I must add only (and finally) that I'm sorry for whatever bad experience you had that turned you against something you once believed. Or maybe not - being LDS isn't the same as living LDS (ditto for all religions); but there are a few million people in the world who have had a vastly different experience than you and who completely disagree with you. I'm not sure what makes your opinion more accurate or important than theirs.

  • I respect the fact that you ponder and search these things in your heart; that's a good thing. The difference is we aren't trying to bring anything new onto the table, all we want is to keep the original intent. We believe in the true god and also his son, the Savior. All spiritual principals are surrounded by love and therefore why would we throw the original doctrine away? We still implement the bible in our studies, there is just the book of Mormon to clear things up when there is confusion.

  • Well, if the Book of Mormon is supposed to "clear things up", why are essential LDS doctrines entirely absent? For example, Pre-existence of man D&C 93:23,29 Multiple Kingdoms of Heaven D&C 76:81-98 Aaronic & Melchizedek Priesthoods D&C 107:1 ff Baptism for Dead D&C 127:5-7 Plural marriage for exaltation D&C 132:1-4 Man becoming Gods D&C 132:20 Many Gods Abraham 4 Eternal progression AoF, p. 430-431 Celestial marriage D&C 132 Word of Wisdom D&C 89 Mother in heaven AoF, p. 443
  • We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God. I just finished off a seminary course this year about the old testament and i bear testimony that these things are in there, such search and pray with faith. There's so much to be thankful for. "But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days."

  • What you're being taught in the LDS church is not biblical. God already told us when he would use prophets to give new revelation about Himself. He used them to set the foundation of his church (Eph 2:20) and until the end of the OT era (Luke 16:16, Matt 11:13). He clearly says these prophets spoke for God in TIME PAST (Heb 1:1). I'm sure you're very excited about seminary. I studied it, too as a teenager, but it's wrong doctrine. I'm former Mormon.

  • The scripture doesn't say what you just wrote.

Read it for what it says...Titus 3:9 says avoid geneologies. They are unprofitable. 1 Tim 1:4 says neither give heed to fables and endless geneologies...

The real reason Mormons focus on geneologies is to baptize for dead relatives...a non-Christian, pagan ritual.

  • Yes, maintaining of genealogies was an important Jewish custom. Ancestry and bloodlines served several important functions among these people. Status within the larger community, inheritance rights, allotment of land, the stability of the throne in earlier times, the right to serve as a priest before God, various marriage laws, were all contingent upon an individual being able to prove his or her place in the proper lineage.

    continued...

  • continued...

By the time Paul wrote to Timothy and Titus, the Old Law had been replaced by a new law (Hebrews 8:7-13). There was no need for Jews to use genealogies to dispute over their identity as a nation, tribe, or family. In Christ there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10:11-13; cf. Galatians 3:28; Colossians 3:11).

  • continued...

For Christians to waste valuable time over foolish matters, such as ones ancestry, is unprofitable and useless (Tit 3:9). The only genealogy that ultimately matters to Christians is Christs. His genealogy serves as a proof of both the Bibles inspiration and the deity of Christ. The Messiah would come from the seed of Abraham (Gen 12:1-3), the tribe of Judah (Gen 49:10), the family of Jesse (Isa 11:1), and the house of David (Jer 23:5).

  • Comment removed

  • Well, if geneology were just a hobby, I suppose it wouldn't matter much, although still unprofitable, really, according to God's word.

It's the bigger picture (salvation and baptisms for dead people) that we're really discussing here.

You know, you and your family need to make the decision to trust Jesus while you're alive. There's no second chances or gray areas.

Either you're born again and have assurance of your eternal destiny or you don't.

  • Comment removed

  • Why don't you care if you're going to heaven or hell when you die? We all have an appointment with death. This life is so short. Hell is not a good place to go. Wouldn't you want to know where you'll be before it's too late? Eternity is forever.

  • Comment removed

  • Well, you said you're not interested in salvation, so it sounded like you don't care about your eternal destiny.

Are you born again already? Is Jesus your Lord and Savior. Do you have assurance that if you died today, you'll live with Jesus for eternity? If so, how did you come to know Jesus? just curious

  • Comment removed

  • That's ok :) You're so right...baptizing for dead people will do them no good.

    Anyway, are you a Christian?

  • Comment removed

  • Praise the Lord!

I was actually raised in the Mormon cult. I even went to the temple and did the baptisms for dead people.

I gave my life to Jesus last year. It took me while to trust His Word because I was taught growing up that the Bible was missing parts and that the LDS prophets were the authority instead of the Bible.

Thankfully, God had mercy on me and saved me.

You're fortunate to have been taught the truth growing up.

  • If Jesus actually was sent down as God's savior and we are meant to believe him and if we do we go to Heaven, why doesn't God send him again today to do his "miracles"? Why would a just and loving God give us a "prophet" 2000 years ago and then expect us to believe him after all the corruption and errors that have occured in the Churhces of Christianity and the Bible? If I get sent to "Hell" for not believing that crap and there actually is a God, then I'd rather be there then in Heaven.

  • Shutup you religious freak...Im sorry that you cant take the inevitable fact that we will eventually die and that there is no super special Heaven we get to go to if we are good. Christianity (and basically all religions for that matter) are a tatic used by people to scare people into doing what the government and other organizations wanted. By making people think if they act bad they go to a bad place for eternity when they die, they can make people follow whatever they whimmed.

  • @manmythlegend12

    Truer words were never spoken.

    I completely agree.

  • austin worthington..

you say that Jesus Christ is your Lord...

do you contend for the faith in which you have been entrusted to???

do you seek to spend and be spent so that some may be saved??

    this is not our home.....

this world is our mission field..

  • Look at the comparisons between Christianity and Santa Clause. If you believe in Santa, you get the joy of getting large amounts of presents and gifts. If you believe in Jesus, you get the gift of eternal life. If you dont believe in Santa and you are a "bad boy," you get the old nasty coal that no one wants. If you don't believe in Jesus, you get the bad punishment of being sent to a terrible "Hell" for all of eternity. Striking similiarities eh?

  • kewl!

  • I find family history fun and fulfilling.
