  • @korkykory no....2:01 is the most important...not japanesse

  • America wtf happened back then they loved our cars now top gear cant stop laughing at us we need to get back to building classics

  • @BigOnes1993 they always laughed at our cars, now they are starting to appreciate what we can do, look at cars like the Fusion and Grand Cherokee

  • glasgow airport!

  • To me the song doesn't fit the car for some reason.

  • leave the rest, GET THE BEST! OIIIIO

  • my friend drove one of these a while back it was a fantastic machine 250k miles and still going a bit of rust had to be sorted but it was a 1991 (repaired in 2009) it was really easy to work on and was converted to run on lpg, the exhaust sounded amazing

  • Once upon a time this TV show used to be about normal cars for normal people, and actually imparted information that average people could make practical use of in their car purchasing decisions. Now it's all about rich boys playing with their expensive toys for the viewer to get an evisceral thrill from watching. The vast majority of viewers are not going to find it useful which of several impossible-to-afford cars has the better characteristics.

  • @dunbar9finger now you got fifth gear for that they took that place

  • I have a 1990 and it just hit 300,000 a week ago I love it. It was my parents first car when they got married. They bought it brand new. Never had a problem besides new windshield and AC but what do u expect. I love it I'm keeping it for my kids lol

  • Well I certainly didn't expect to hear the Pet Shop Boys in this review.

  • my aunt, she is very sick ;-(

  • 1995 167,000+ Miles, still runs strong as ever.

  • Did anyone have a diesel by any chance? They made disels as well as the 4.0 Litre

  • proper maintenance on the Jeep 4.0 liter and it will last FOREVER! one of the best engines America ever built. simple, strong, and rock solid dependable. my 99's got 200749 on it and it purrs like new.

  • Proper maintenance on the Jeep 4.0 liter engine and it will last FOREVER! Truly one of the best engines America ever built. Simple, strong, and rock solid dependable. Mine has 200748 on it and purrs like new.

  • I had one of those a while ago until one of the cylinders started getting oil blowby and it wasn't worth the money to have someone take the engine apart to find out what was causing it. That was at about 140,000 miles. These things lasted a long time. The nice thing about them was their high underbody clearance that let you drive after a snowfall even when the streets haven't been plowed yet.. But I couldn't afford to drive a 20mpg car at today's fuel prices.

  • @dunbar9finger I think Diesel one could help with fuel consumption

  • Thumbs up if you combed through comments for 10 minutes looking for ysivyboi1's comment

    OIIIIIIO Woot

  • @jonstaskis not i think your are just dumb retarded

  • @aLex0kain Hmmmm... Well, at least I can say I know how to speak the English language properly...

  • Comment removed

  • only in an xj

  • jeep brah hay!

  • I love the cherokee, i have a '92 myself. I like this review and how they are very knowledgeable about the xj.

  • this is a good review, i agree with virtually everything he says, if current top gear did a review i guarantee i would be thinking 'what the fuck are you on about' after nearly every sentence

  • I have 98 wrangler but same engine and trans as Cherokee and the 4.0L fires right up after 190K

  • I do believe that the Cherokee was one of the best vehicles ever made. I currently own a '91 4.0 with the ax15 5 speed manual. 204,000 miles and it runs like new, no loss of power at all. The car is sized perfectly, not too big like a Land Rover and not so small that you cant fit in it. Looking back over the records its had nothing but oil changes, the typical water pump and a new clutch. We have owned 3 other cherokees before this one and all of them were virtually problem free.

  • WILLSON is such a cock.

  • I'd easily take a Landcruiser or a Hilux Surf over one of these.

  • @megaman2000 Amen

  • @megaman2000 Fine. But it wouldn't be for any rational reason.

  • OIIIIIIIO

  • USA USA JEEP JEEP

  • If you live in north america Jeep is king, if you can pick u pick up a wrench you can fix your jeep, hell yeah

  • my family owned the same Jeep Cherokee since 1997 (its a '95). 167k miles on the clock and still going strong.

  • I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic and It has about 150,000 miles on it and has never had any problems (except the air conditioning once, but it was a minor fix). And this is of course with proper maintenance and care. Truly great cars

  • are these really that reliable, or is the bad stories all about its sucessor

  • i have almost the exact same jeep and it has never let me down no matter how hard on it i was

  • It's too pad the ones from the 90's and the 2000's were so horrid. My mother worked for a company that had Cherokee company cars. THEY WERE ALWAYS BREAKING DOWN, always in the shop, something was always wrong with them. They finally started replacing them with GM's or Fords I think a few years ago. lol The Patriot is supposed to be better I hear. That mechanic told her to get something with a pathfinder engine so she bought an Xterra 6 years ago, and its never had a single problem. He was right!

  • Its sad that Jeep cant build anything 1/100th as good and reliable as this anymore.......fail liberty, FAIL!!!

  • @fobroader so sad is correct

  • Wait. Top Gear once said an American car was good? This must have been before Clarkson cam along.

  • My one issue with this review is that jeeps aren't common. In north america the cherokee is EVERYWHERE, and I like that. Parts are dirt cheap :)

  • This is the old Chrysler. The great Chrysler from the days before Daimler swooped in and cost-cut all their product into bankruptcy.

  • 88-94 4.0 motors are a horse. I use Amsoil in my old jeeps, and you can not stop them!

Just remember to keep all fluids topped off and your good. 200k miles and climbing!

  • Man i have so much so say but so little room to say it.

Now i see people crying about a 4 liter engine only putting out 170-190hp. Its the low end torque and reliability thats so special about these gas engines. Even chrsylers V8 Magnum engines had low HP. 5.2 Liter and 5.9 Liter engines with only 220-245hp. The torque was huge 345lbs of low end torque..Trucks have Hemi's again and HP is 300+, but the torque hasnt changed much still hanging around 350-400

  • @1ownjoo2 There is no low end torque, and 80% of cars on the road have "Hemis"

  • @deanbassist01

Low end meaning low RPM torque.. Unlike today's engine which require you to rev 4-5k rpm to reach there peak torque..

and no 80% of the cars on the roads do not have hemi's.. lol Trucks in the 90's and early 00 didnt have hemi's at least for chrysler trucks. They were Magnum engines.

  • @1ownjoo2 hemi is just reffering to the shape of the cylinder head, which most cars use hemispherical designs, Hemi, is simply a marketing skeem. Arctic cat markets there atv's with H1 and H2(for hemispherical 1 cylinder or two) even though Suzuki makes there engines and dont bother mentioning it because its nothing special. Its like car ads that try to advertise that they have power steering, when all cars have power steering so its just a way to fool people.

  • @deanbassist01

Hemi is not a marketting sceme, the hemi's out now use 2 sparks plugs per chamber.. Magnum engines do not. Your right about the hemispepherical design... Its more efficent then the Magnum. No way a marketting thing. You get more HP for being more efficient..

  • @1ownjoo2 You are write about the torque, someone had told me that and i looked it up as well before i posted and thought i removed the comment. However, the oposing cylinder head design to Hemi is a triangular shape and proves to be more efficient, hemis are used in just about every average consumer car, high performance cars such as lamborghinis and ferraris use the triangular design.

  • @1ownjoo2 You are write about the torque, someone had told me that and i looked it up as well before i posted and thought i removed the comment. • @1ownjoo2 There is just Torque, not low or high end torque.

  • @1ownjoo2 There is just Torque, not low or high end torque.

  • Comment removed

  • @deanbassist01

Ok i just looked it up, which i suggest you do also.. People call it low end torque because the rpm's are lower, and high end for higher rpm. Thats what i call it also and i dont care if you dont like that or not, but that is what its called.

  • One thing tho about gas mileage, back in the 90's gas was so cheap no one cared about MPG.. I remember like 7 years ago when gas was 50 cents a gallon across the street. Now its $3.01 from the same station. The 4.0'S MPG is better or the same as most of today's 6 cylinder engines in trucks and SUV's. Jeep and Ford's V6 engines, get no more then 15 city and 20 highway same as a 4.0.

Now my 5.9 V8 i get about 11-13 city lol, but when you drive with a engine like that you shouldnt care

  • I need really liked the Cherokee, to small, to boxy looking, outdated dashboard that looked like something from before i was born in the 70's. Im a Grand Cherokee ZJ person myself. The ZJ body style is timeless IMO, looks far better then the current Grand Cherokee's from the WJ to the WK2. Like the cherokee has a great 4x4 system, but with more comfort and leg room inside.

    I own 2 ZJ's, both 1998, one with the 4.0 and the other with the 5.9 V8.

  • @1ownjoo2

I never really liked * sorry

  • my 89 cherokee is lifted 14 inches, on 36 inch super swampers!

haha if a land rover tryed to follow me! he would hydro his motor!!!

and my 4.0 has alittle over 350000 miles on it, and still is puring like a kitten!

  • This clip gave me goosebumps. I've driven my Cherokee through 3 Canadian provinces and 9 American states, from a construction career into university, through all possible environmental conditions and it still runs like a beast! Love mah Jeep!

  • But I will say, Jeep made one MASSIVE mistake with the XJ...

    They stopped producing them :(

  • I have one, My dad has one, my brother has had two (one got rolled), and I have a few friends with three or four each. not a single one of them has fewer than 300,xxx kms on the complete factory drivetrain, one has over 700,000kms, and two others over 500,000. They are bombproof vehicles, they may leak oil once in a while, or take a little while to start, but very rarely do they fail catastrophically. Not to mention they are awesome off road and basically make the perfect winter vehicle

  • bull crap, they are very unreliable, I know people who have owned them.

  • Comment removed

  • If im not mistaken, the Rover 3.9L V8 used in the Range Rover and Land Rover Discovery models in the same era made roughly the same amount of power as the Jeep/AMC 4.0L inline six. These engines were tuned for low down torque for hauling over 2 tonnes of 4X4 not raw horsepower, they were unstressed and therefore reliable and very tuneable engines which both had very long production lives.

  • I love my 91 Jeep Cherokee Limited. It has 138k miles on it and there is No Sign of it braking down. This may Seem Crazy but Jeep Will be the Only Vehicle i will ever Own. I guess Jeep owners are right when they say when you own a Jeep, other Vehicles sound like Shit. Jeeps are one of a kind, they are in there own Class.

  • LOL! The relay is on its way out on that disco! Story of my life (Series III owner)

  • top gear isnt biased. its just america doesnt make good vehicles like the xj anymore.

  • The Cherokee was the best looking 4x4 ever and are *way* more reliable than Land Rovers. I love Land Rovers but you can't be the best 4x4xFar if the majority of your time off-road is spent on a ramp at the garage...

The 4.0L engine goes on forever, the low HP figure is of no relevance to 4x4's, what matters is torque at very low rpm's. The only problem with the engine is it's appetite for fuel.

Nice to see the old Top Gear wasn't biased against American cars unlike the current one.

  • L271 KVR is apparently still on the road! Truck on, old Jeep.

    (From DVLA Vehicle Enquiry)

    Date of Liability 01 01 2011

    Date of First Registration 03 09 1993

    Year of Manufacture 1993

  • @davek12 But sadly the DVLA indicates that L271 KVR wasn't renewed and is currently unlicensed. Sad.

  • Jeep 4.0l HO motor 190hp special motor! Right there with bmw straight six and no britan can not make a motor this good.

  • i like jeep but im srry, not better than range or land rover

  • Haha who is this guy? Must be the one that Clarkson copied his style from.

  • @wibble34 Clarkson was on the old top gear, too. Look over there -----> and you'll see a video called "Old Top Gear Ford Probe." He looked hilarious. Not sure of this guys name, though.

  • I L OOOOOOOOOOVE THIS CAAAAAAAR!

  • Awesome.

  • .. airbag?

  • Who cares?

  • @deepmelody1991 if you have no family, sure go ahead and kill yourself.

  • @7eis, cute.

  • In my opinion, this is the most reliable vehicle ever made. One of my favorites, as well.

  • Jeep Cherokee is one of the two American cars that has high demand outside the USA.

Other one is Ford Crown Victoria / Mercury Grand Marquis.

Only thing Amercian car makers has to improve on those 2 cars is the fuel economy but nowadays they are too busy making Ford Explorers that has transmission problems after 20k miles and Jeep Grand Chrokees with full of electical problems. Then they use their loby to create Camry recall scandal to damage Toyota's reputation and stock.

  • Amazing. A Chrysler that doesn't suck.

And before you complain I shall remind you of the sludgenator V6 that was in the ca 2000 Seabring.

    Etc

  • @GhostofRazors I believe it was AMC at that time. Chrystler might have taken over by then, though.

  • i miss my cherokee, it was amazing. they are awsome 4x4x!

  • my 95 chrokee has 210,00 miles and a guy i work with his is a 1993 it has OVER 310,000 mile! still kickin up mudd assfault and snow

  • @tcmlr I know a guy with 350k miles.

My Grand Cherokee with the 5.2 has 226k miles and has shown no signs of stopping anytime soon. It's an amazing vehicle.

  • I really dont like this guys face.

  • The Jeep Cherokee was one of the best Jeeps ever built. Of course Chrysler had to cease production on this wonderful vehicle, which was huge mistake on their part. The Jeep Liberty replaced the Cherokee which infuriated Cherokee fans. If Chrysler was smart, they would re-introduce The Jeep Cherokee. But of course, that wlll never happen.

  • Well, it might be possible. There's a company out there that's remaking "new" Toyota FJ40s, though the price is steep since they're hand-built and virtually bulletproof.

  • My fav car ever. Mine technically does 40mpg and has recovered countless shitty landys. Towed a broken down VW to santa pod lol. tylerspyler2 ur talking shit all the new jeeps like 2002-2010 are shit apart from the JK rubicon, the patriot isnt "offroadable" its a heap of shit.

  • @TheRobertB

40mpg lol, im a Jeep owner and i love Jeeps, but there is no way your getting 40mpg.. You wish. Not even with a Hydrogen fuel cell, or a NGK spark box.

  • The point of low-power, simple engines (by that we mean push-rod engines) is that they are sturdy, durable, and have their torque available at very low RPMs. In other words perfect 4-wheel drive engines. The engine which replaced the 4.0 was worthless in this application.

  • The 4.0 naysayers can "piss off!" ( isn't that an amenable British way to disagree?) While no one will disagree that the 4.0 ltr has terrible fuel effieciency, it's still far better than the Land Rover 3.9 v-8... And what's the point of having a V-8 if it's not more efficient... or more powerful... or more reliable... than a straight 6???

As a Yank who absolutely LUSTS after a Defender DIESEL, can the average Brit really argue with this gents claims???

  • finally they say something nice about american cars

  • I miss the old XJ. Damn you MERCEDES!

  • my sister has a jeep and it has 250,000 miles and still runing!!! ranger rover a ulgy!!!! haha

  • The diesel versions of the Cherokee's are rubbish.

  • @kazimann No They're not. I've got a 2.5 Litre Turbodiesel from 1995 and while the VM Motori engine is noisy and it only has 118 Bhp it's still a very reliable car and was very respectable for a diesel in it's day even today they're not that sluggish.

  • well i have to say bmw is very reliable in my opinion. my dad has a 1996 525 diesel. it doesnt go wrong apart from like a tube going to the turbo coming off...easy fix put it back on again!!

  • Isuzu Trooper was best. My family ran one for over 10 years no problems at all

  • @desimunda116 my jeep cherokee is 10 years old and still runs perfect and is still faster than a camaro rs 5.0 v8 lol

  • That steering wheel without airbag is ugly.

The grand cherokee is so much better...

  • @yyoU8s what a snow job --cherokees besieged with steering box and other problems

  • I dind't understand.... lol

  • what! a british guy says that jeeps are better than landrovers! thats not right. i wonder what he would say now with todays jeeps and landrovers.

  • @BeeABaw haha thats true

  • @BeeABaw wonder how much they get paid to say stuff they dont really mean

  • haha. i think they get paid rather they liked it or not. thats why i think Top Gear dident make it over here cus our car corps cant take being crizised.

  • @BeeABaw yeah im guessing u replied to someone saying that top gear only says good things cuz they get paid? and nah if u see their review on the toyota prius they straight talk shit about it lol. me, i like the xj cherokee and i would love to own one but for now my wd21 pathfinder is a capable enough offroader =]

  • @BeeABaw Thats why CHrysler refused to lend Top Gear a Car in the US Road Trip

  • my dad had one and it kept on breaking all the time but it was an awesome car but id rather a discovery or a rangie cos they are better offroad

  • i had a 92 cherokee sport now i have a 2000 grand cherokee laredo

  • @laytonwhoitis whach you trans on the grands they are prone to failure especialy the autos

  • i wish my 2001 Grand Cherokee limited was half as reliable ....

  • Mine is.

  • american cars are the best

  • lol funny guy.

  • i only buy cars that are american and that were made in the USA

  • You should buy a BMW one day. Then you will realise that america know NOTHING about making good cars.

But what america do know about is making POWERFUL cars, and cars with prestige.

Muscle car history in america is very respectable.

  • yeah i will agree that BMWs are nice cars, but have terrible dependability....my uncle bought an '09 535xi wagon, and had to take it to the dealer seven times for the same problem. a problem with the computer caused the engine to drastically lose power, and BMW headquarters couldnt come up with a fix....he finally took it back to the dealer, and got all of his money back.....that's not the only story that i've heard about that. i would buy a BMW and keep it until the warranty went out

  • you could get that issue with any modern car tbh.

The computer systems in most modern cars are just too much.

  • To buy a BMW is to take a journey into the land of the $500 oil change and the $1500 brake job. And heaven help you if you need major body or suspension work done.

Wonderful things to drive, but their cost of ownership is very, very high.

  • @sctpoch amen to that

  • If you really think America doesn't know how to make good vehicles now you have a very outdated view of American cars.

  • dude, you must not know..the 4.0 is known as one of the longest lasting, toughest engines made. Its on par with the chevy 350. The peugot tranny got replaced early on, in the Jeep line. I think it was tossed in 1990. Atleast for the wrangler it was.

  • Only going to get 20mpg???? Damn, I would love to get 20 out of my Cherokee:)

  • it's imperical MPG, witch equates to 16,66 US MPG.

  • That makes more sense. Mine is lifted and bigger tires so I am lucky to get 12. Amazing vehicles though.

  • Yeah, a friend of mine har one with 33's and lwas lifted and ts looked really cool. His had a 2,5 turbo diesel engine though, witch is more common here in Europe.

  • Ye it is very strong like the Land Rover 3.9 V8 no doubt but is very very very underpowered and very uneconomical

  • @ysivyboi1 -I have a 90 Cherokee with 260k miles and I live at 10,000ft elevation. (3000M) Up and down mountains. I have never been passed by a Land rover even the little ones. I don't believe I would say I am under powered. And gas millage.. old cherokee got about 20 when new. Mine is about 18mpg up and down mountains.. The best land rover has is LR2 at 22mpg.. The Lr3 is 17mpg. Now for price. Used Cherokee $2500. Used Land rover same year 5500.. And mine gets me home every day.

  • I had 1 in 1994 and by no means would I say it was under powered, if you hit the sport button it would leave most things standing and if wet was to much power if just selected 2wd.

but remember these vehicles are not about speed and this 4x4 has one of the most reliable engines I have every had, explains why to this day as like many people who have owned a jeep I have owned many ever since, thanks for putting it up

  • @ysivyboi1 Ha! You want uneconomical, I drive a 1995 Jeep GC with a 5.2 V8, Got to go, the truck needs another drink....

  • For all you 4.0l naysayers, it is one of the longest lasting, strongest engines out there. It was the Jeep workhorse from 1964 to 2006 in one form or another. It will run with low oil, with a broken crank, or with bad gas. This engine is an engineering wonder. The only reason it was taken out of production at any point was because it was cheaper for Chrysler to use their emissions v6 than update the 4.0l. Ask any Jeep owner with any sense and they will tell you Chrysler has lost it.

  • @xerointell i loved my 4l straight 6. it was a beast.

  • @xerointell you are right i just turned 250k miles on this very model

  • @xerointell very true. 170,000 boat pulling, offroading miles on our 2004 grand cherokee with no problems

  • I loved my Jeep... I miss my Jeep

  • the 4.0 straight six was a terrible engine for britain, 170bhp from a 4 litre engine, terrible

  • @ysivyboi1 Not really, the range with it`s 3.9 liter V8 had about the same horsepower.

  • @ysivyboi1 in 1999- 2001 they had 193 hp and 235 torque, thats inpressive for an engine with no electronic controls like an egr valve or a vvt or crap that can go bad.

  • @ysivyboi1 Actualy it had 180hp in 1980s. it was 190 stock in 1991. Now lets talk about torque.. 87-90 215 lb·ft. 1995 220 lb·ft. 2001 243 lb-FT.. Now one thing you usually give up for low end torque is HP. But if you pull as much as you can out of an engine, it will not last long. My 90 Cherokee has 260k miles. Still runs good. You can put a 4.6l stroker in with 240hp and 325lb-ft, but that won't last long. One freek put a turbo on for 700hp. I bet it won't last 50k miles.

  • @ysivyboi1 and your a moron because that engine isnt made for horsepower, it was made for the low end torque it could produce, and it produced a good amount, and actually toward its later years it made almost 200 bhp, you could actutally fairly easily build these up to produce almost 400 bhp, i did it when i had my cherokee. it is a reliable torquey engine, not made for raw horsepower

  • @tallzdatank i thought they were quite fast tons of torque and reasonable horse power in a light vehicle one of my fav offroad vehicles.

  • @ysivyboi1 it is an off roader engine designed for low rpm torque rather than a dazzling number of Brochure Horse Power like in some vehicles.

  • @ysivyboi1 It had so much torque though! And was a hell of an engine.

  • @ysivyboi1 Yea, but great for America. I've owned two growing up, now im 22, and am glad to have had my jeep by my side. Never got stuck in Chicago Snow. 150,000 miles on my cherokee and it hauls ass.

  • Very popular model in Europe.

  • prefer my Vauxhall Frontera.

  • What's the name of the song in 3:31 ?

  • "Go west" by the Village People.

  • pet shop boys.

  • they sold these jeeps in korea too, they were made in USA,JEEP also made vehicles in korea too,the old korando was a CJ7 before ssangyong joined with daewoo/& merecedes. , the jeep cherokee was also built in china from 1988 ~2008

  • pet shop boys - go west

  • Damn, I miss the REAL Jeep Cherokee.......not that Grand POS........or that Liberty abomination masquerading as a Cherokee in Europe.......

  • @Teeebs me to but i do like the new patriot tho just because it is like the cherokee as far as beeing inexpencive, loaded, offroadable, and having no recalls in it history, but it does need a better engine and trans (from a power boost perspective)

  • to bad jeeps aren't made like they used to be
