@The1stPoster These are field rations. I'm sure US troops in the rear-rear have access to their equivalent of the Catering Corps, who would be preparing fresh meals. The closer you get to combat though - you'll see more prepacked prepositioned food.
Unlike many Commonwealth countries, who still issue a *ration* (all food for 24 hours) - think back to the US provisioning in WW2 where you'd get effectively 24oz of product per meal and all 3 issued at the same time, the Us went to combat meals.
If I understand correctly, the rule is: Field kitchens whenever possible. A dollop of stew in the canteen cup is much cheaper than MRE's. MRE's are expensive.

@The1stPoster These are field rations. I'm sure US troops in the rear-rear have access to their equivalent of the Catering Corps, who would be preparing fresh meals. The closer you get to combat though - you'll see more prepacked prepositioned food.
Unlike many Commonwealth countries, who still issue a *ration* (all food for 24 hours) - think back to the US provisioning in WW2 where you'd get effectively 24oz of product per meal and all 3 issued at the same time, the Us went to combat meals.

If I understand correctly, the rule is: Field kitchens whenever possible. A dollop of stew in the canteen cup is much cheaper than MRE's. MRE's are expensive.

@madisonelectronic Believe it or not I actually like Haggis! And, also believe it or not, as I was strolling down Princes Street in Edinburgh I went into a butcher shop and bought VEGETARIAN Haggis! LOL, talk about contradictory. It was good too, they served it on a plate with tatties and neeps.

my husband when he was in service and when he came home he will bring MRE home because when he went Guard Camp they will have few left over and they will give some him. I try all those MRE. my favorite Chill Mac and there few other i like.

my dad was a staff sargent in the royal signal for 25 years and have been out of the army for 15 years now serverd in the first gulf- falkland too and in our cupboard at home i found a british army ration pack ¬.¬ must be like 20 years old donno why he still has it maybe jsut one of those things people keep

@mikleman996 Umm - would that be the GS or GP ratpack? THinking about it - have you checked out the BBC4 Army-A British Institution collection? Lots of old stuff shoved up on iPlayer in perpetuity... including the old Paras series... showed the differences in rations if you watch the old to the current doccos back to back..
