The big disappoint for me is the fact that Hot Rod and Rodimus have the same facial expression; both of them look mopey, which is fine for Rodimus, but for Hot Rod I expected a cocky grin, something reminiscent of the turbo-revvin punk. The hands are too dainty and the backpack thing at 7:20 bugs me too. Apparently the 2nd edition fixes that.

I would've REALLY liked it if they had not made the trailer portion a separate entity like the G1 Rodimus Prime. I would've liked to see the trailer integrated completely with the front cab to transform into a taller and bulkier Rodimus, one who could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with MP01 Optimus. The 1980's Rodimus suffered with smaller sculpt than his counterpart Galvatron, and it would've really helped 80's R.P. if that useless cannon trailer was instead more plastic for the robot body itself.

Got the Hasbro version a week ago from TRU. He is fricken impressive even in the alternate color scheme. But good Lord he is NERVE WRACKING to transform. when I first transform him the paint chip near the windshield (It's painted over the transparent blue in multiple coats.) Makes me wish I knew someone who can do a repainting. I don't have space for the trailor so I waited. Offshoot, the Targetmaster, is a joy to transform and is more articulated than you think.

peaugh, I just wanted to let you know about a good solution to fixing the hot rod figure. I found you can take the black leg coverings off completely and store them in the trailer along with the screws. This eliminates the blockages to the leg transformation. Keep the waist panel in robot mode when you transform into car mode. You can press leggings back on in robot mode without screws.

Rule of thumb: Peaugh review first, purchase decision later. I *wish* I saw this before getting it.

30:10 onwards sums up every other sentence in peaugh's review: "BE CAREFUL." The figure's too irritating to try and transform *knowing* pieces can chip, wear, or even break, all the while parts are flopping around because they barely tab in. I'd say if you want a display of him in bot mode, don't even bother taking out of box. He's too fragile. Good display piece, HORRIBLY FRAGILE transformer.

@optimus304 There's a few color differences, and the Hasbro version loses the Trailer to reduce costs, but otherwise both figures are the same. From what I understand there's a few minor fixes done to the Hasbro version as the figure does still have problems.

This figure, by all standards, is a piece of shit. It looks great but every time I try to transform him one of the panels on his legs FALLS OFF, just as you said it would. To me, this is unacceptable. This is a MASTERPIECE figure. It should stay together a little bit better than your average figure. Apparently not the case with this. One of the key components I look for in a figure is playability, and this thing does NOT have it. Definitely taking it back. :(

I bought the TRU version at Big Bad Toy Store because I live in the UK and we are unable to buy it at our TRU. The one thing i wish it would come with is the trailer because you only have the Hot Rod, Rodimus and sports car modes and not the Truck mode. But besides that I can't wait to get it.

This is quite some work of engineering to have both Hot Rod and Rodimus in one! One question I had is you have the both Hot Rod and Rodimus car versions but is the robot version just Hot Rod or Rodimus? Rodimus does look different than Hot Rod in robot mode so I'm wondering if they made that distinction as well. Great video, thanks!

Absolutely fantastic review/guide to the figure... you saved my MP-09, just bought at Botcon yesterday, from being hurled across the room in frustration. I had almost every QC glitch known besides the foot spring issue, and the worst part was that I could never get Hot Rod's vehicle mode even close because I couldn't get the arms to fit in properly. Your tip about the hinges on the feet was what I was missing. Also nice idea bringing the shoulders down on Hot Rod to separate the robot modes!

IF they made masterpiece rodimus prime to store and use mp optimus' matrix, he would be the tallest masterpiece figure.

at least grimlock and the seekers are smaller than rodimus, so it's a standard size for the masterpiece line.
