I know that I don't mind at all was a somewhat of a big hit on the east coast of Canada. Eight Seconds was and still is huge to this day getting much air play on Classic Hits stations.
Never heard of The Other Ones, but its a great song, I have heard oh Jayney Klimek though, I have 2 CDs with her one, both albums by Tony Banks from Genesis, Bankstatement from 89 and Still from 91 and they are both fab.
Among all of these, the top 3 I agree with are the Silencers, the Other Ones, and Curiosity Killed the Cat. All three of these artists should have been WAY bigger than they turned out
summertime summertime-Nocera a fave dance song when I started to go to 18+ clubs. I saw her in person at a Boston club & I love all the freestyle music from the mid 80's- 90's. Great dance music still til this day.
@nccvball Im talking about "Don't tell me the time", by Martha Davis. Lack of radio airplay over in USA? There is no way the public would have ignored it otherwise. A brilliant song
Actually, it received quite a bit of play for the first week or two (at least on the east coast of the US)... then, nothing. When I went back to check where it landed on the charts, #80, I realized no one bought it. I am thinking the record buying public was looking for a Motels' release, not a Martha Davis release.
@nccvball and even the towns in a continent, even by the neighborhoods within a continent and even by households within the continent and bedrooms within the houses on the planets within the solar systems in the cosmos in the neighborhoods in the world within the second dimension of the neighborhoods in the cities on the third dimensions and all of the other worlds in all of the dimensions everywhere in the universe of music that are in the opposite universe that made it to popularity! Whew!
They're all good ... but what about a-ha's Cry Wolf, which peaked at US #50 early that year? It amazes me how some people still hate those Norwegians that much.
Martha Davis had a lot of press behind that song but it failed to generate much sales. I did not realize how much it tanked until I started my research.
i never heard/remembered hearing the martha davis song thats how i know it tanked.
t depended on where you lived as far as what radio stations would play. i found the south to be more receptive to new music in the 1980s than rust belt cities.
SUGAR FREE by Wa Wa Nee was HOT ! where can i find this version you have posted here? can you post the full version you played here? I love that song!
BTW - The Hooters did a major tour that year opening for Squeeze. Imagine the marquee outside the Springfield Civic Center (MA) - it actually said "Squeeze/The Hooters". Strange but true.
I always wondered if Jon Astley was a fan of The Cars. "Jane's Getting Serious" sounds like a lost Cars tune. I remember Grace Jones' 1980 Hustler pictorial - she posed nude with a woman and a hermaphrodite (creepy photos).
@nccvball Do you mean the one from a couple of years ago with Todd Rundgren? Or has the original lineup reunited and I didn't hear about it? I heard some of the stuff Rundgren did with the "New Cars", and didn't care for it much, which is unusual because I've liked just about everything else Rundgren did going back to The Nazz.
No, the remaining four Cars members got together and they released a video on Facebook (it might be on YouTube as well). They sound pretty decent. Look for a possible tour in 2011.
1987 was my year. I remember John Astley's song. I also remember The Breakfast Club. They had a hit with "Right On Track". Sort of remember Curiosity Killed the Cat. Grace Jones' song sounds great. Since I'm from the Philly area, I remember the Hooters very well.

When I heard the Martha Davis song again after 20+ years, I remembered that it received a lot of radio and video play. For some reason, the record buying public and the music critics turned on that one solo album.
Thanks for the info on "That's Freedom". I did not know that.
none of these songs should have been bigger hits

Yet over here in Australia, the song reached Top 20. Everyone loved it here. Goes to show the shit taste of American consumers, doesn't it.

Not sure which one you are referring, but tastes can vary by continent, even by regions within a continent.

I can't recall what year they released it, maybe '86 or '87, but one song I think you should have included was "Are You Sure" by So...
Great vids tho, I do remember "Jane's Getting Serious" and was in Germany in early '88 to hear Bourgeois Tagg, and wondering where they went...
