I have never before seen the psychological reality of these characters brought to life so vividly and painfully. It's almost too hard to watch. So well done. Perfect.
Yes, Callas was also criticized, because her voice was so rare, but the memory of her as a wholesome artist will remain forever. I guess people criticize everything that they don't know how to classify. And anyway, so many people spend so much time classifying voices instead of listening to them... Poor souls.
Looks like the German mezzo Waltraud Meier. She is known for high dramatic mezzo roles like this one and Isolda which is has sung a number of times in Bayreuth
This is a great performance from these two artists, absolutely riveting. Jose Cura is something of an enigma to me. At the beginning of his career, I thought he was going to be one of the really great tenors. This potential has never been realised. Yet he remains a tenor of great charisma and a gifted actor and musician. I have seen him several times and despite some unconventional vocal techniques, he remains one of the most interesting tenors of the age.
Very true, in every sense. However I saw him in Turandot a couple of months back and in Fanciulla del West a little before that at Covent Garden and I'm not sure he's actually still a true tenor. Not that it matters of course...
Wel, I'm no admirer of Cura but as far as operatic acting is concerned - this is best I have seen in over 40 years of attending performances. And the voice - for all what people say - is very good. I'm sorry, but this is a very good performance.
I actually think his acting is not bad - old fashioned maybe but good for that reason. He is Cura, so what? when one has a presence as he does (even if he just stood there) does it matter....
I had the priviledge to see this guy on opening night in his American debut as Canio in Pagliacci. Man, not only does he look good but his voice is freakishly wonderful. I guess you could say he's a good successor to the late and great Pavarotti.
Some people already know I am a huge, major fan of this tenor, but it never hurts to say it again: this is a super talent. The intensity of his performances coupled with the complexity of his characterizations is mesmerizing, but even this video doesn't prepare you for the live experience. He is really a complete package and truly unforgettable in all he does (opera, concert, conducting, video, etc.)
Jose Cura is amazing in whatever character he is portraying or just in anything he does... I've seen him live a few times and that is even more impressive. The emotional energy of his performance, just hinted at above, is unbelievable. Plus, he seems like a neat, nice guy backstage.

Holy crap that was intense! Is that Waltraud Meier??? I only know her from the Wagner repertoire. Whoever she is, she is absolutely fantastic. Jose Cura also ofcourse, too bad he sort of disappeared though. Here he's in top form:-)
I don't think he is disappeared... I think his schedule is too busy, and this is the reason that sometimes he is singing not soo good... I don't want to say bad, but sometimes you see that he is tired. But maybe I'm wrong...
In my opinion, he is obviuosly a great actor with a wonderful force in the stage and good interpretation but with a forced, pushed voice, not very good technique. Typical voice of our times that lasts little time because of tecnique.
Credit is Given to Jose Cura, but what about Her? Darn she is good ! What a voice, what a feeling. Acting! NO, when She is with him an He, with her... They are in their role, the inside takes over. Curtain's comes down, you come back to reality !

This is definitely Verismo at its bravest. What a fine duet!!! Two wonderful artists who convey with the acting and their voices the true meaning of "Cavalleria". It was fantastic to see they physical desire and passion they portray,as well as his clear intentions to get away from her. This is the best acted "Cavalleria" I have heard and seen in a long time.
This video should require an apology from all the people who dump on Cura. This is Verismo at its FINEST!!! Regardless of time period. Waltrud Meier as well, while both have strage vocal production both flow directly from their hearts to their audience. This is the very essense of why I live for this stuff.
Extremely hot-blooded for one. Cura brings out the conflicted animal in Turiddu...not the guy who simply throws her away. He's in heat and shows it. Sure he'd like to be done with her, but he'd like to take her right on the steps of the church. Good to see this duet with both in constant physical contact with each other instead of running all around the stage like cat and mouse.
Agree with nopuppy. Although the one shining here is Meier. Tremendous performance, and both of their actings.. incredibly passionate.. just the way it should be. It really got into me, so that means they're doing a great job overall.
And anyway, comparing tenors. and musicians in general, is a big mistake. Specially those that lived in different times.
I've seen and heard better, but this is extremely good. Whatever your thoughts on Cura, he's very good looking, he sings well, and he can act, which, let's face it, is something Corelli and Del Monaco couldn't (or didn't).
When Cura sang his first Otello in Argentina, he said to an interviewer "I'm not going to sing Otello sceraming as Del Monaco did".
Cura got one of the worst reviews appearing in OPERA magazine
