  • I'm getting ready to plant some seeds that I gathered from rose hips last fall. Does anyone have any helpful tips to help me grow them well?

  • Ray I was told that growing avacado from seed will never produce fruit?

Someone I know tried for several years to get it to fruit even with other pollinators it never gave fruit.

But on the other hand a lady I knew had a nursery and half the property was avocados, she said hers would produce from the seed. very strange.

  • @SMprepnNancy Nancy is correct...You need a male and female plant in order to produce actual Avocados with...Source: Temucula Avocado Farms.

  • What planting medium do you grow your pineapples in?

  • @frozentootsiepop Just a standard potting mix. I mix in some worm castings and vermiculite to enhance it.

  • @VoodooGarden Thanks! Also, I'm wondering why the pineapple was so small compared to pineapples from the store. Is it because it wasn't grown from seed?

  • @frozentootsiepop My guess is it's because it isn't given the intense daylight sunshine that the production plants are given. Also less root space.

  • Thank you for the seeds Ray. They have just arrived today :)

  • Hi ray! I have a question. Do avocado trees need more avocado trees to produce fruit or ca 1 by iself produce?

  • @Incredibleisaac2 Avocados are self pollinating.

  • sadly, i over watered my hydroponic tomato.

  • Ray what new stuff are you going to try this year im going to try some vertical and container gardening also what is the most rare plant you have grown or wish to grow

  • @dhill2004 I have some odd stuff growing this year. I keep adding new things when I find them. Rare? Hmmm.... Belladonna I guess? It's not exactly rare but extremely uncommon to grow indoors.

  • I made my first batch of worm tea over the weekend and watered my plants with it. I cannot wait to get results like you do. Your plants grow like hollywood child actors.

  • Cool thank you, I am sure your right, other than no sun I don't know what else could be the problem, it probably just is natural. I do live in Oregon so no sun as of now!

  • Ray, about how many asparagus seeds would you put into the 12 inch pot?? Would it be ok to start the seedlings in a pot that size from the beginning?? Sorry for such a silly question but I'm just that new to plants..I never know how many seeds to start per pot!

  • @rankindragon I would plant 4. That size pot can maintain 4 plants if the soil had enough compost in it or if you fed it organic fertilizer every now and then.

ps: No such thing as a silly question if you need an answer. :)

  • Thanks Ray! What a great video and really helpful!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love the asparagus! It's so cool how different the leaves are :) I also like how the avocado leaves look similar to the mango leaves!

  • exactly what I do with my hanging baskets in the greenhouse, lift them and I can tell water or not to water.. and you're right you do know after awhile when it needs water..and I would of done the same with the asparagus I am trim crazy I love to cut plants down they become such a better plant when done so..

  • I'll check out Issac's channel but I have started about 10-15 avocado seeds so far I have 2 (my first 2 I started) in soil and they both are over 2 ft tall, but one of thier leaves are starting to fall toward the floor and at least three of them are browning around the edges and drying out.

  • @ffrickness Are the very tips of the avocado leaves browning? If so I believe that this is natural because the same thing happened to mine when i grew mine a couple of years ago. I also think that because avacado and cocoa trees have very similar leaves and cocoa tend to have the brown tips due to heat, lighting, etc. the same thing will happen to avocado's. Hope this helped :)

  • It looks alot nicer as well when u leave the avacado seed sticking out of the soil :)

  • thanks for the asparagus tips i really appreciate it, please keep us updated with your asparagus plant

  • Ray i don't see a humidifier there, it must get really dry where you are. what do you use for humidity?

  • The pineapple tops get smashed during shipping. We have been trying to sprout two tops and we aren't getting any luck..they were probably sprayed :(

  • Silly Ray, why don't you built a greenhouse this spring to grow greens for the winter...

  • @4GreenEarth2 This is my greenhouse. :)

  • Yes...lol I learned the hard way.. don't overwater!

Also it helps reduce fungus gnats. I don't have any gnats because I learned not to overwater! :-)

  • @gardenvespers777 BINGO! Fungus gnats hate dry soil. The also hate being sprayed in the face with pyrethrin. I love knowing what they hate. Nasty little boogoers!

  • I always like starting my plants in water too, I love the Asparagus plant just for the foliage, so light and airy, and then you cut it off. lol

  • @loislaney23 It grows back thicker if you cut it because the fronds will fork many times.

  • @Praxxus55712 Are you going to plant it outside, or is it going to be a houseplant?

  • @loislaney23 Definitely outside in the raised beds. I have 5 pots exactly like the one shown. I figure within 4 years I'll be buried in asparagus spears. :)

  • @MyInspiredCreation I would love to see an update on your avocado's and on your pineapple! And good luck if you start the aparagus :)

  • Hi Ray, thanks so much for the video and the shout out!!! My Internet connection is not the greatest but next week I will be able to watch all these videos! Don't worry, I'm saving all my good subscription videos on my watch later playlist!!!!! I can't wait to watch it!

  • The plants are looking great, you must have been using some of Paula's worm poop. Darn, I just had to say that :P Can you tell us about that chest I have seen in your most recent videos as my antique antenna has gone way up.I have a passion for odd and antique items. Forgive me for being off topic.

  • Great video Ray. As to the water / dry out method, how long do you let the plant dry out? Do you do it till the leaves droop? I guess how long do you let the plant be light weighted with low water to encourage root growth? Mart

  • @marthale7 I water before the leaves droop. Light, plant size and room temp will cause the dry time to vary so just keep an eye on it. Try not to let the leaves droop, but if they do, you will definitely have a maximum time limit and you can just stay a day under that.

  • Ray, I just noticed that you put your intro as a outro :P

  • @DarkTheShinyUmbreon As long as it's not in the middle of the video I'm ok.

  • I cant wait for my peppers to grow :P especialy the bhut jolokia and the trinidad skorpion, or maybe the hot chocolate habenero

  • from now on i'm starting all of my avacado seeds to grow into trees. i'm also trying to do the same with citrus seeds. then i'll just take the trees to the annual plant exchange and give them out. free plants at the plant exchange gets you a lot of gardener friends really quickly!

if i'm not careful i'm going to end up like ray and the plants will take over my house!

thats a killer pineapple top! i went to a dole plantation and they had different species pineapples like red vietnamese.

  • @Compn1

Wow, that pineapple sounds really interesting. Why do I have better luck with growing pineapple from seeds than avocado..I think my DE-chloranated tab water is stunting the growth on my avocado sprout. We just have our winter wonderland this morning and I've collected some snow for my indoor plants. I'm going to see if the avocado will do better in melting snow water. I will be uploading the video on how I collect the snow soon =)

  • @4GreenEarth2

it took months for my avocados to do things. i think it also depends on the avocado species, ripeness and probably if they were refridgerated. i have one that has been in water for 8 months and hasnt done anything, not even rotted. while other avocado seeds have germinated in 3-4 months. i also have one that has only grown roots, but no sprout! i have found that if i let the seed dry out before putting it in water, that it dies. so dont dry it out first!

  • @4GreenEarth2

some people suggest letting the seed ripen inside of the avocado instead of water. wonder if that works better? :)

  • @Compn1 It definately works, not sure if it works better though. We have 4 avocado trees and our dog burys them whole. They sprout up all the time! haha

  • I've got 2 avocado seeds in water right now, nothing showing yet.

I think one of your secrets is you kind of wrestle with your plants, lol, probably makes them stronger.

  • Does anyone know what makes beets grow tops and no roots?

  • @earlene0925 Did you maybe use too much nitrogen? Nitrogen will produce nice greens, but the that's where the energy is going.

  • @earlene0925 also..google "beets" and "phosphate" I just read about several positive results when adding that for beets! Phosphate helps produce strong roots. I use rock phosphate for onions, asparagus and potatoes...and started adding it as an amendment at transplant for the rest of my veggies as well. It has really worked out well for me. :-)

so that's why I thought.. hmmm. beets.. hmm ah! phosphate!

    Hope this helps!

  • Thanks for the vid, Ray! Always love watching them. I grew my pineapple in a water container as well and it's growing new leaves. I agree with you when it comes to watering the avocados. I water mine every 2-3 days, I let the soil dry up and water it. I have so many avocado plants I started from seeds, I plant to donating them to the tree people eventually. I have to give the asparagus a try one of these days. Thanks for the inspiration, Ray!

  • Another great tip to incorporate. I'm really liking your channel!

  • very cool update ray! love it! those are awesome! also, we are getting snow here finally! yay!

  • @MIgardener We got snow for two days. I spent yesterday shovelling it. Now I hurt in strange places on my back. Apparently there's a muscle there and it's not happy with me.

  • Another great video thanks Ray

  • Another great video thanks Ray
