  • rest in peace Ruffian..you touch my heart...you belonged on the track. :*(.i love u and i always will

  • Ruffian, she was so amazing R.I.P

  • her bio came out when i was a sad prenant teenage newlywed. it seemed to mirror my life at that time. i bawled at this video. very sad.

  • I loved Ruffian, who was the most beautiful of fillies ever. So sad that she had to die so early in her incredible career. What great heights would she have scaled in the brutal world of horse racing? Truly a Champion even up to the end, when she continued racing in an effort to beat Foolish Pleasure, though she was grievously and fatally injured. I think, had she been just another average filly, she would have had the chance to live a long life. R.I.P.

  • 36 years ago today....July 6th 1975....will never forget this animal and how my heart was broken....great tribute and nice video.... "On Golden Horse Shoes She Fly's"................thanks

  • oh!!my fault^^ Gary Brooks - The Dance^^

  • need the name of the song...it´s Elton John???? ^^

  • this tribute gave me a few goose bumps to say the least. Having been there trackside when eight belles went down.. this brought back alot of memory's in deed!

  • @TheMzWTF- You got it a bit backwards. It would have to be that it was Zenyatta who showed some Ruffian-like qualities. It'll be interesting to see what kind of offspring she throws.

  • my friend had never heard of ruffian and kept going around school saying that "makybe diva" is the best female racer in histery until i shoved ruffian in her face n all she had to say for herself was " ruffian? thats a stupid name for starters and makybe divas name actually statds for something... a pie shop" haha yeah right ruffian would flog makybe diva.. great vid btw!

  • wat a queen was was it made me cry

  • Very fitting song!! Very nice tribute!

  • I was just curious how old you are ? (the person who made the video)

  • @thebackgroundartiste i was 17 when i made this im now 18

  • @titaniclover91 Thankyou. Very nice pictures and a fitting song choice. The sentiments could apply to a lot of racehorses unfortunately. Such beautiful but deceptively delicate animals.

  • Thanks to your video this song will always make me think of Ruffian. What a poignant match! Thank you for a great job well done.

  • Sweet grass, fresh water and balmy days for you now lovely girl. No more human pride and greed....................

  • Awsome vid.... made me cry

  • thanks... made me cry too! =(

  • Me too.

  • amazing video

  • thanks =)

  • I cried..=[

    R.I.P Ruffian

You were pretty and loved by many. Like she said..Legends NEVER die.

  • Totally agree with you! =)

  • hey can someone do me a favor! Please!!! Could some one make a video of Ruffian just running the race *match* and breaking her leg and that is it. I know this sounds weird but she is the only black race horse that had that happen. And I need it for my story. Thank you I would love you for it!!!!:) It can be any song really:) but I would like Naruto "Distance" thank you!

  • Ruffian is the only "black" you know of who has broken down because black thoroughbreds are rare. Ruffian was not a true black, she was registered as a dark bay/brown. Some color photos of her clearly show the lighter color of her muzzle. Her base color was

probably the very dark brown of "black" coffee, not true black. She was so dark she

appeared black, tho. 1924 Kentucky Derby winner Black Gold, a true black, broke down at the age of 7, finished the race on 3 legs, and was euthanized.

  • @marysueeasteregg Sunday Silence was a black thoroughbred and Lonhro (Australia) is also a black, absolutely BEAUTIFUL but Ruffian was definitely a brown horse, and a beauty ♥

  • @denabluechicken Long prior to this thread I had seen a pic of Lonhro online, as an example of a black TB.

Magnificent animal! The book Top 100 Racehorses of the 20th Century has Sunday Silence listed as dark bay/brown, but he is typically described on the Net as a true black, and if he was registered as brown, that apparently was in error. I was aware of Ruffian making waves as a 2-yr-old, & clipped pic of her winning the CCA Oaks, which I still have. Sixteen days later, she was gone.

  • @marysueeasteregg such a tragedy....but sadly the fault of those who bred her.

  • @denabluechicken I agree - on both the count that she shouldn't have been entered in a 10 furlong race

so short a time after racing 12 (times were different, tho) & that her breeding itself was problematic, with her

2 fragile parents. I wince, however, when people accuse her owners of being "greedy." They were

themselves reluctant, but Barbara Janney's nephew was on the NYRA's board of trustees. NY racing

needed a boost & the Janneys agreed to the match basically as a family favor.

  • @marysueeasteregg I think Eight Belles was a black thoroughbred too and she broke down at the kentucky derby

  • @HMJ0997 The lovely Eight Belles was grey (per Wikipedia article on her, and her online pedigree). Her

breakdown, falling near the wire, reminds me of the gruesome breakdown of the great Go For Wand at the

sixteenth pole in the '90 Breeders Cup Distaff. :(

  • yeah, i know! Shes beautiful! :)

  • shes too pretty!!!
