@checkoutmrpushypants I always eat a small portion of the food from bettyskitchen, but my main diet is egg whites for breakfast, tuna for lunch, and broiled chicken with steamed vegetables for dinner--no snacks.
@spicychick1172 Some people think I don't focus enough on calories--like with the recent deep-fried chicken and the Italian Cream Cake--very calorie-laden! I just make food for everyone--a little steak and potato type food, some vegetarian food, lots of casseroles and soups, plus side dishes and desserts.
To everyone out there who worries soo much about calories! Just do exercise! If u dont have time, then do exercise. Yeah. Do that. It's better for you, PLEASE.
@babyface043 For microwave popcorn I always use Kroger's 94% fat-free. It's only 15 calories per popped cup. I use spray "butter," which is 0 calories.
@bettyskitchen spray butter is NOT zero calories. it has 9 calories per gram like EVERY fat. it is a marketing loophole that allows them to say it is zero calories or fat-free by making the serving size less than .5 grams which rounds to zero, when in actuality, it is 100% fat.
@hippymobster That's true; I would advise anyone using this to spray on a small amount, and that way you know you are getting very little fat--but, you're right, it's not totally fat free!
@Dreaminstar64 Peanut brittle is on my list; I will probably make it in fall or winter. Right now I am trying to catch up on seasonal foods. Thanks for the reminder!
@Chickenbandana Sometimes I pour some of the fat free spray butter into a small dish and microwave it for a few seconds and then drizzle it over the popcorn. You may get some fat that way, but not much.
I couldn't quite see the brand on the popcorn box, could you please tell me what it was?
Great tips, I'll surely try it. When I was seriously dieting I used to eat store brand dill pickles (zero calories) with yellow mustard (also zero calories). I know it sounds crazy, but it took away that late night snacking urge.
We don't have a Kroger out here in the Bay Area. We've got Lucky's and Safeway, Andronico's and Nob Hill, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. . .but nooo Kroger's. Guess I'll have to hunt and read labels. Yes, my little girlfriend from Nepal only weighs 130, so if I ride her piggieback it feels just like being fat again. LOL. It took me 9 months to lose it, but I should have gone slower I think.
The brand of popcorn doesn't matter to me. I just look for the kind with the lowest calories. it really varies for popcorn, and I like to know what I'm eating. That's why I cook most of my food, rather than eating out a lot!
Wow, you've got that right! It's so impossible to know what you're eating when dining out. All the restaurant cares about is that it's yummy and satisfying, with an eye on their bottom line. It's easiest to load things up with fats and salts. . .and you'd never know how much. I've eaten at Subway for the last 3 years specifically to know my caloric intake and eat whole wheat bread and veggies. It worked out well.
i'm assuming that you are referring to health issues. I don't have health problems, but I really want to avoid them, so I am very disciplined in my eating habits. Probably not as much as you, because I do eat things that would be on your 'no-no" list!
The main tip I have is not to deny myself anything, but to allow myself anything high in calories *ONLY IN SMALL PORTIONS*! I try to eat lots of fruits and vegetables and lean meat--not a lot of sugars and starches. If I want some rich chocolate cake, I eat a large apple first, then have only a sliver of cake. I feel very full and satisfied. I also work out at the gym. This has worked for me all of my adult life--It's not a "diet," just a lifestyle choice!
Betty, I love your videos - but I have heard that using the microwave zaps nearly All nutritional value from foods.
Also, you might look into using coconut oil to pop it on the stove top as an alternative. Turns out that coconut oil is actually very healthy. Just google it.
My favorite way is to pop the corn in organic coconut oil and drizzle it w/ raw agave nectar & a sprinkle of sea salt.
Keep the vids coming. Great recipes and I luv your fashion style!
Those are some interesting ideas! I will look into the microwaving of popcorn, and also using coconut oil. The agave nectar and sea salt sounds great! Thanks for your tips!
Oh, the Parmesan cheese is a great idea! There are lots of tricks to keeping the calories low, and yet have a very tasty treat! Thanks for your sweet comment!
You need the spray in order for the flavorings to stick. If you don't like to use spray, you may use melted margarine or butter, but that will add more calories, and this was designed as a low calorie dish! Please change it to meet your needs! Thanks for your question!
MMmmm Popcorn. I didn't know you could do so much with them. All this time i've just been eating regular microwaved popcorn as is. Thanks Betty, you're the best!!!
This is great, Betty. My oldest son lost 65 lbs after college, and one of his "ammunition" items was air popped popcorn (your microwave low fat popcorn is only a few calories more than that, and more convenient). We discovered the butter spray, and then used salt free lemon pepper, etc.. Your ideas here are so great! I am sending them to him. DORITOS BE GONE! :)
Thanks, Patsy! One of the things I was trying to get across is that the three flavors that I chose are just some options. Everyone can just choose herbs & spices & flavors that they like, and this can be a treat that can be enjoyed almost every time you want a snack with getting tired of it! Thanks for your agreement, Patsy!
