  • What was the date and location of this concert?

  • @4embrown - 6 Oct, 2006. PSK Auditorium, New Delhi.

  • What was the date and location of this concert?

  • @EVERYONE,, The Great बीनकार(or musician) in dis video is also an IRS officer,,,

this is called a gr8 ALL ROUNDER ,,

u r our source of inspiration

"if dis music would be listened in the early morning,,dis will surely make ur day,,,,,, god could be remembered while listening such soft/pure music

    THNX

  • The history is written on the Veena, this is beyond to capacity of the spirit, and no words can adequately cover this music. From Palestine with all the appreciation to the Indian culture.

  • Sat SRi Akal Bhaaji.

Pakhawaji da naam ki ya ji.

Guru Nanak thoaday thay Kirpa Satnaam dhi bakshan.

  • This is Music.

  • Great tune! Thunbs up!

  • I love indian classical music, not only bollywood.

  • Beautiful music, thank you for this. Greetings from Iceland!

  • Can you play "Stairway to Heaven" on that thing? Are the notes even the same? What is sa re ga me pa de ni?

  • it is actually Do re mi fa sol la si do.

  • Of course you CAN play Stairway to Heaven, theoretically there is only one set of notes in existence, just called different names, and some use more microtonal variations than we do in Western music.

  • nobody knows who the pakhawaj player is?

  • Pt Dalchand Sharma is on the Pakhawaj. Pandit Dalchand Sharma belongs to the Nathdwara Gharana. He learnt pakhawaj from Acharya Pandit Tottaram Sharma in the old Indian tradition of guru-shishya-parampara.

He is a Top Grade Artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan and has performed extensively both on the radio and television, as a soloist and as an accompanist. He has participated in many prestigious music festivals in India.

  • He looks like he's about to be crushed by that veena! How heavy are those things, anyway? Peace.

  • The size of a veena is usually deceptive :) Some of them are pretty light.. very very delicate sa the rudra veena is made of pumpkin I guess . It is a tailor made instrument. The person who is going to use gives his measurement. So the length of the veena not too much or too less for the vainika.

  • very beutifull ! what raga are you playing there is it kafi ? and who is the pakawaj player ?

  • wow...that's so different from what i've heard so far but it's also very beautiful..all cultures have their own music...

  • To say that this is soul-stirring would be the understatement of the millennium!

  • fantastic sir ,

  • Thanks for posting this Misraji! Wonderful!

  • Really wonderful sound and an amazing instrument. Are those resonators at *both* ends of the instrument?

  • yes. if you look at the sitar it can also have double resonators.

  • Vah Mishraji Vah!!

  • I must be wired different tahn most, why is it

of all the music I have access to this at some point this is all I can listen to everything else strikes an empty cord whats with that. Oh wait I know this puts me back

in touch it's absent of sorry, joy, want, it just is.

  • May be my western thoughts lack the in depth

understnding of the ways of India however who

cares how he sits if the music sounds great in that it does he can stand on his head

and gargle peanut butter while playing marbles. Who cares as long as the music

    stirs your emotion.

  • "he can stand on his head

and gargle peanut butter while playing marbles"

That's a nice little composition itself!

  • mighty....although he seemed to lose his stream of consciousness toward the ending.

  • He is sitting in the Dagarvani style , seeing as he is playing a Dagarvani veena. It is too big to be played over the shoulder. This style was created by none other than the famous been player Z. M. Dagar. Look it up if you think it is wrong. He changed the way the veena was played.

  • Evidences in the form of ancient pictures, sculptures and paintings clearly indicate that Rudra Veena or Been was played in various positions such as :

    1. Standing

    2. Vajrasana

    3. Virasana

    4. Sukhasana

and various other postures which are "sthira" as well as "sukham". Yoga Sutra defines 'Asana' as "Sthira-Sukham-asanam" and all such posturs are "natural".

  • @docsunsand You my friend are lost in ritual and not in the experience of now. Has YOga taught you nothing?

The rule of Yog is that there are no rules...parmAtma is formless.

  • I've listened to this about 100 times! but the ending destroys the bliss every single time!

  • Apologies for the video glitch. The longer version of 28 minutes is available on live video site at url:

    livevideo. com. /suvirmisra

  • sorry, I didn't mean to sound negative or show any disrespect when commenting on the video glitch!

Your music continues to inspire bliss in my heart every time I listen!!!!!!

  • What sort of instrument is the other one? Is it a mridangam?

  • lol

  • It is called Pakhawaj- the original Tabla!

  • Beautiful music, thank you for posting this.

  • Pure Godhead!!!!!!

  • is this instrument "left handed"? i'm sure that mr. misra is playing in the traditional style but by left handed i mean does one fret with the right hand and pluck with the left. i play guitar left handed and have long wanted to play sitar or a sitar like instrument and would be pleased to have found one to match my style. i am assuming the video wasn't flipped because dramas was able to read some of the hindi. if anyone can help i'd appreciate it a lot. namaste

  • In India most instruments now come in both left and right handed versions. Since many professional players have their instruments custom made, it isn't uncommon to see this. The instrument making industry in India is still dominated by small family workshops, because this is the only way to make such meticulous instruments at very high quality standards. It's great for musicians because you can have an instrument tailor made to fit your playing style.

  • Dear Sirs,

The Veena seen in this video has been partially prepared and customized in my small home workplace.

  • hello

namaste all. eventhough it is now fashion and easy to get custom made instruments, veena is the oldest instruments. VEENA IS PLAYED IN LEFT HAND AND THE STRING IS PLUCKED IN THE RIGHT HAND, wat he s doing is right. this veena i hope is pretty heavy compared to saraswathy veena

  • Suvirji -

I suggest you link this video to DynamycDesi. They are a good platform to promote globally. They also run weekly talent competitions that may be of interest to your students.

  • Thanks !!

  • I want to learn veena too. But I'm not an Indian and out in the Philippines, hence, no gurus anywhere. I'd still like to grab a veena off an online store and practice by myself - better than nothing. Hopefully one day I can make a voyage to India and find a beautiful soul to teach me the instrument.

  • awesome

  • I like this, what does the text on the banner translate to? (Please?)

  • It says Navedit (not sure what this means) kalakar samiti New Delhi in Hindi. the last two words mean "artists' association". I think the first word means either new (Nava=new) or classical (Vedit=hindi version of classical/derived from vedas). Since Hindi is not my native tongue and the (possible according to me)meanings are opposite, I am confused too.

  • Navodit means, newly emerging

  • wonderfull

these two sounding like ten people in harmony

:-) or whatever good you can imagine

  • that's my maama! Rock on babloo maama! Puru

  • hi puru!

  • Very Nice!!!!!

  • India must be the most spritual place on earth, the stringed instruments have a

soothing effect upon me, thank you I

love to listen and listen and listen.

  • Thanks for the comments. It is one of the most beautiful one because I always say the same to myself whenever I play or listen to the Rudra Veena.

  • I agree. In fact, scientifically validated studies done on the effects of indian stringed instruments show they can improve our health and speed up plant metabolisms incredibly. Look in "The Secret life of plants". I kept my garden going on Ravi Shankar when we had a six month water shortage, just amazing!

  • wonderful rendition. please post some more rare ragas. thankyou!

  • Thanks to all for listening to Raga Malgunji. I have posted the Raga Shivmat Bhairav Video as well.

  • I feel very grateful i was born then and in such a place, spoiled with popmusic and such, but so now i really feel this Rudra Veena sound is... one of the best sounds i have ever heard. (2)

  • "Rudra Veena"..., wow: i learned something new. This is really very interesting, sounds i never heard before. I was born in the socalled West at yet the beginning of hippie era and the great spiritual search of the socalled Western people in masses... who wanted to be freed from their dogmatic ties, wanted to find something better than that. (1)

  • Totally cool tuba64! I was also born in the darkest west and subjected to the brain destroying artificial music and lifestyle. There was no doubt as to how I felt when I heard this spacey timeless vibe. Awesome! Cymatics studies would probably reveal enormous amounts of "free energy" being liberated for our bodies use by the vibrations of these powerfull instruments.

  • LIKE AN ANCIENT ELECTRIC GUITAR

  • The rendering is soulful and simply divine. I look forward for many more presentations.

  • thats a butifal looking instrument and sounds great its almost like a sitar but i find this sound more soothing

  • I am impressed, I have never heard anything like that before, serene, tranquil, hypnotic, relaxing, and warm are just some of the words I would use to describe it, I want more, can I buy this on cd? x x x

  • Thanx for the lovely comments. I would be up loading more of Rudra Veena very soon for your listening pleasure.

I am currently looking for a good publisher.

  • what's the name of that instrument?

  • It is called the Rudra Veena or Been.

  • The 28 minute version can be viewed on the livevideo. com. /suvirmisra

  • Good one!!!

  • I have posted the longer 28 minute video of the performance on the live video site

  • simply imagine yourself under a mango or bodi tree listening to this kind of music in a state of tranquility.

  • that look and sounds like a pakhawaj, but a large one!

  • great video, it's good to see this old instrument still has a few exponents/innovators. very powerful, haunting sound.

  • Beautiful :)

  • Realy good!

I have just got a Sitar from Nova Délhi, Índia.

  • It is a pakhawaj

  • The drum is not mridangam. It looks like tavil but sounds like pakhawaj?

  • the sound of the rudra veena is just great!

  • im guessing this is south indian by the drum?

  • He is a Hindustani (North Indian classical) artist adapting South Indian instrument.

  • oh ok thank you! i play tabla and i was thinking about picking up this drum but i cant find a good one in maryland

  • bolenath!!rudra veena ki jay !
