I can't believe some of the comments in regards to Zucchero and Bocelli. Number 1, neither of them discovered the other. Zucchero has been an artist in his on right for many years, Bocelli was taken under the wing of Pavarotti (BTW there is a recording of this song with the 3 of them) who believed in him and wanted to open doors for him. Sometimes I wonder! Do your research before you post!

Long time ago italian people (and i guess others too) used that word to define the last "goodbye" to someone who's dying.

Expressions like "You can sing him the Miserere" is an example of that use.

As 65avf wrote down there, it means to have pity on someone who's dying.
