I just saw Tommy live a couple of days ago. I have you to thank for introducing me to him through this video. I'm a fan of your remixes (you made a quick Mega Man Legends remix for me, remember?) and I found this link through your site.
He was absolutely amazing, and you're not bad yourself!
@aLiF92 If you want the bass to slap without muting the note, you can't come directly down at the string perpendicular to the face of the guitar as you would if you were just slapping the string against the fretboard. You have to hit the string hard enough that it slaps, but at an angle so that you're only touching the string for an instant before you come to rest on the next string. (Also, coming to rest on the next string produces some percussive noise if you rest hard enough against it.)
@FrenchKramer whoa now, thank you for that. But I of course cannot agree :) Having played the song, it just makes me appreciate more what Tommy can do. Forget the runs, forget the complexity -- Tommy has an amazingly tight and forthright groove that just makes me feel clumsy at best.
I'm studying abroad in Melbourne Australia right now, and I see him in concert in 8 days! right before I go back home. can't wait
@PatrickBurns You're doing GREAT! No, not quite TE quality but that's like an IMPOSSIBLE standard. When you've performed on the guitar for 50+ years, I'm sure you'll play every bit as well as Tommy. (I mean, Tommy isn't even a fair comparision for anyone.)
Adding percussive sounds to your playing is the wave of the future! It's part of the reason Andy McKee is so popular. In this song, Tommy does it by hitting the bass note with the thumb pick and slapping on the next string with the pick. It takes looseness, accuracy, and practice, but it works. In other songs you can bounce your thumb off of a single string quickly to do this, or you can strum down with the fingers and slap the thumb on the sixth string--no bass sounds, but there's still a slap.
Man this was really a great rendition of the song and you pulled it off in the style of TM. You should be extremely proud of the result as it is in the top 1% of the fingerpicking videos on YouTube. Have you though about entering a fingerpicking contest? You would surely make it far in the competition.
I don't remember if I have commented that yet. If so, sorry. Anyway - great performance, loved it, and very nice sound quality. I agree that mixing microphone with piezo gives best results!
great cover mate. loved it. that little pause was a nice change. certainly one of the best covers on youtube. the only criticism i have is i think that you should have brought out the bass a tiny bit more but other than that, well done
Really nicely done. I so know about the bitten lip and how tough it is to have a happy face! Personally, I chew my tongue when I'm trying to reach for hard chords!! Would love to see what you thought of my blue moon! bb
That was more than fantastic man! It's right that TE did perform it and record it before but here, it's all your own. I'd easily vote this video as the best I've seen performing Blue Moon on an acoustic. The way you play it, the expressions and feelings, the whole atmosphere. Great and masterful JOB buddy! I'm off to share this video...
I thought the same thing when I watched Tommy do a lot of that. He says he's never ever broken a neck, and he does it much more than I ever do. Anyway, that's the direction of force the neck is designed to take.
absoltely brilliant! loved it! of all the versions ive heard i never seen sum1 do wat u did at 2:19....i really enjoyed it! when i post my vids be sure to check em out ay! keep up he awesome playing!
