I've had glandular fever for 6 months now. I'm still weak, tried and groggy. I first noticed raised glands in my neck, followed by what felt like flu, fever, and general rubbish. I ended up losing a stone within a matter of weeks. I find I have both bad and good days. I try to take one day at a time, and resting when I know I need to. It's frustrating because people seem to forget you're ill, but I know when it's time to slow down. I'm open to any questions of course.
@bethannyxx well I'm three years down the line now and finally the good days out number the bad days but I've lost my job because I really couldn't cope with work on the aforementioned bad days......we will get stronger only if we take care of ourselves and rest sufficiently..... I get occasional pain, stiffness, poor circulation and fatigue.....also I have to force feed myself because my appetite no longer supports my body's needs..... slowly but surely I am gaining power
@DangerousDinky1 Just a quick q, ever since being diagnosed I've had pain in my stomach. I've heard you can get a tender spleen and was wondering if you've had the same problem? I used to be REALLy active and now I can't so much as run for a bus without feeling bloated and sore.
Hey hows it going? Just a quick question, were you getting recurring stomach pains when you got this? I've felt like shit for like a week and i think it might be this...
@fatkat444 heya, I experienced initially bizarre weakness and exhaustion over a three week period, then severe flu-like symptoms, fever, shakes and loss of appetite, if you think you have Glandular fever then see a Dr. asap because during the early stages it is highly contagious. The stomach pains are caused by gastroenteritis, one of the affects of the illness, this leads to rapid and alarming weight loss, it can also affect the lungs heart, kidney's liver and spleen, I had all of the above
But the acid test is if you have a very bitter taste in your mouth all the time. The virus spreads throughout the glands in your body and is present in large quantities in your saliva. So drinking and eating become difficult as even water tastes vile, it is important that you do not share drinks, utensils, cigarettes, and that you wash your hands carefully as you could spread it to others, I contracted it by sharing a canned drink with someone. It will also some out in your urine.
It's really important you get a proper diagnosis because how you handle GF in the early stages dramatically affects your long term health. I knew nothing & thought it was really bad flu, getting stressed at the shitty company I worked for, cycling into work everyday as it was the only way I could get there on time, but over a 10 period the journey was taking longer and getting harder, then one day I just kept collapsing (of course the bastards wouldn't send me home) then bang, gone!
@fatkat444 this has come out in reverse order of course, but don't wait until you collapse before seeking a diagnosis. It's literally rehydration, nutrition & lots of rest, eat as much as you can, if someone can look after you while you recover even better. If it is GF, really important that you take time to fully recover after the initial illness, I spent 3 months in bed, lost weight & body mass. Takes most people up to 6 years to fully recover... take care or it can turn into ME
@DangerousDinky1 Thanks a heap for all the detail, you've given me more info than i could find on any websites. Yeah i'm pretty sure i've got this, all i ate yesterday was 3 eggs and usually i'm a ravenous pig haha. I'm drinkin a shitload of water yet my urine is rlly yellow, tongue feels dry, and oddly enough i woke up with cuts on it from biting. I wake up and literally can't get outta bed, it feels like i weigh a ton. Definitely gonna book the doc asap now. Again thanks for all the info!
@fatkat444 Well my mate hairy Matt had it in his 20's and I'll never forget what he said to me when he discovered that I was suffering the after affects, he was like "Dee, when your spit is like a white pellet & your piss looks like snot, it's fukin' Glandular Fever man!!" Word
Be well fatkat, get to the GP, drink water, keep warm, loads of good nutrients, i.e. fresh veg soups shoved into you, fruit, get some vit supplements like cod liver oil and vitamin C, avoid alcohol like the plague
@fatkat444 if you can get someone to take care of you then do it, you ain't over the worst yet & rest mate, I mean it really rest, a good Dr. will tell you all this but most of 'em are egotistical prats! Avoid anything that puts the liver or kidneys under stress & don't fall over (GF thins the wall of the spleen & it can tear easily) & you will lose weight so eat even if it makes you ill you have to. get someone to help, I cried when I didn't have the strength to go to the bathroom without help!
@tertruder lol......well rest rest and rest baby, or you will suffer for a long time. Rest your mind and body....took me 3 months before I was nearly normal again and two years later I'm still not right in the head but I sure don't look like L'il Wayne anymore!!
Yeah, that was 2008...much better now it seems like I get occasional relapses, full of beans for months then my body crashes. I had a long chat with James about it, that was quiet enlightening but also confirmed some of my fears. Thanks Gaea, bless.
