The green bars under the staff are used for volume control. The more green showing, the louder all the instruments above the bar will be. That little feature can be used for all kinds of neat stuff like crescendos and echoes.

@zacktheninja300 I prefer it, mostly because I've played it far more than I've played Brawl, and hence have not had time to adjust to brawl's characters(link being much heavier and slower, for example, and Ike having erupt instead of sealed sword attack like Roy does.)
