No you're wrong. Halo Reach is a prequel to Halo Combat Evovled(aka the first game). This is where the Covenant kills all the Spartans on planet Reach except for Master Chief, who escaped on the Pillar of Autumn, thus beginning Halo 1

When the Dawn was through the portal, because Chief was at the back, when the Arbiter's half of the ship was out of the portal, the chief's half was somewhere in the portal, halfway from The Ark to Earth. Then, he landed on that planet or was flying close to it. Happy? (This is the most probable theory, might not be the true one).

A Spartan is never listed as KIA if he/she is not present after a battle. He/she will be listed as MIA until further notice. (Like if body proof is present). But for some reason, Lord Hood does not approve of the assumption that Chief is alive. So he assumes him dead. If I were him, I'd also assume he's dead. It's the most probable theory. But it seems that he's alive! He was last seen by Halo 3 players, floating in space near an unknown planet with Cortana while he's comfy in his Cryo Tube!
