Since, you know, the rich are evil. I'm sure if most of you won 100 million in a lottery you'd give it away, since you wouldn't have felt you earned it (really, picking 6 random numbers should entitle you to more money than a homeless man). Everyone should just make the same no matter what they do, even if they do nothing. It's the only way to be truly fair. Is not the man who has one dollar more than you 'richer' than you?
Woah, he's starting to almost take the same tone w/Obama as he did w/Bush...and, as usual, he's only 100% right. Obama fuckin' sucks! He ran as a Progressive, yet governed as an EXTREME corporatist centrist, and even yelled at Progressives while in office. He lied to us. He ran as FDR and governed as Herbert Hoover.
Someone should primary Obama in 2012. HOWARD DEAN FOR PRESIDENT!!!
"One" mind of "reason" in an ocean of the fucking "idiots" that are americans. I would vote for you in a heart-beat, Keith. Pleeease don't give up the fight. As Dylan said, "Tthe firs now, wil latter be last." You are a beacon of brilliant light K.O., pleeeease don't let the absurdity of politicians, the american citizens, or corporte america stear you off of your track. "YOU" are right, "NOT" them. Bless you and your family. Sadly, there are far too few of you.
When he said : "He will not only not be reelected he may not even be renominated."
That's when in the eye's of Obama's handlers on Wall Street he stepped over the line. This is why Olbermann was fired. Obama's hiring of Immelt GE chief-owner of MSNBC -and Olbermann's firing is no coincidence.
How do the poor creat jobs??? Rich spend more and invest more. The top 1% of people already pay 40% of all the taxes and the top 10%pay 71%!!! The rich pay for basically all the taxes when the people who live on welfare take money from people because they get more than they give. The current tax policy already penalizes the rich and those who worked hard, but the people on welfare, who sometimes don't even look for a job, are rewarded with tiny taxes. This is nonsence.
"Working hard" is great, but nobody is making millions of dollars by logging or working in a coal mine. People who make over 250 thousand dollars a year are people who work white-collar jobs, people who have every comfort imaginable.
Think of it this way - who can afford to pay more taxes, people with Mercedes Benzes and mansions, or people working at Pizza Hut and struggling to keep afloat? Try being poor sometime, then get back to me.
@JunkCCCP um, I am a high schooler and I have to say I agree with you. In this country, people that our rich pay a significant amount more than the poor. What is fair is that someone making 50,000 will pay 5,000, while someone making 500,000 thousand should pay 50,000. That person pays the same amount as the other person gets, but that is as fair as it can get. What happend under our system: 50,000 pays 5,000, while 500,000 pays 175,000. That is 35 times more! Definitely fair...
Yeah, mathematically "fair" is what you're going for. The thing is, if we're going to collect the same percentage of tax from everyone, we'll either be overtaxing the poor (taxing everyone using the rich person's tax model) or not coming close to collecting a decent amount of tax dollars (taxing everyone using the poor person's tax model).
Again, even if you collect 175,000 dollars from the person making 500k, doesn't that leave 325k for him? He's in no danger of starving to death.
@JunkCCCP Well, if the flat rate tax were used, it would eliminate the need for the IRS. Your taxes would be about half a page long. It really would be the fairest system because if the rate fluctuates, all class's will feel the pain or feel the good. Also, eliminating all subsides and tax credits will help with the cost of it, plus it would ad to the simple and fairness aspect. Also, I know that everyone is anti-rich, but 70% of those who make more than 250k, are small businesses.
The IRS wouldn't be eliminated. Who would gather and check and process all the taxes?
You have a bizarre elementary-school outlook on this issue. Nothing is as simple as you claim it is, or claim it will be, otherwise it would have been implemented already. We see your idea for a flat rate tax being used in how many countries? Can you even name one?
@JunkCCCP The Flat Tax would work and I am right with you, it should have been implemented by now. Russian is a prime case of the success of a flat tax; the real revenues from its Personal Income Tax rose by 25.2% in the first year after the country introduced a flat tax, followed by a 24.6% increase in the second year, and a 15.2% increase in the third year. Many other westerm European countries have flat taxes as well, all with similar success stories.
@JunkCCCP My parents are from Russia and you have a lot of other problems going on over there... I enjoyed this debate, but it looks like most of Congress agrees with you about the progressive tax anyway.
I believe you're right about the role of small business as a creator of jobs and wouldn't rule out federal aid to small business as a partial solution but I can tell you, as someone who is involved in running a family-owned retail business with over two dozen employees, that we don't hire because we got a cut in our federal taxes...we hire staff based on customer demand. That means people with money that they're willing and able to spend.
ive never met a poor person that provides jobs or that donates to charity. what makes you think you're entitled to my hard earned money? this government wasn't created for everyone to be "equal". it was created for everyone to have an equal opportunity. quit relying on handouts and create some personal responsibility
I'm sick of people whining, like at 4:50, about "the money given from one rich dead guy to a rich living guy won't be reduced?"....Guess what, fucko? That rich dead guy didn't get rich on accident. He probably prepared himself & took wise risks, worked hard, etc. I just don't get this fucking parasitic mentality of wanting to take and take and take things from others for ourselves. And I'm saying this as somebody who is not rich at all.
@VicInNocal The person receiving the inheritance did *zero* work for the money. That's who's taxed in estate taxes, and those are people who did nothing for the money but be born into a rich family. What did Bill Gates' children do to deserve to be idle rich? Even Gates recognizes this in his case and is leaving most of his money to charity.
@CQ9 So what? It's the rich guy's money. Not yours or mine. He can choose to give it to his children (after all, they were probably the main motivation in his life), & have them oversee it, rather than have the government take it from him & WASTE it away on a stupidly expensive war or Wall St bailouts or rehab clinics for piece of shit junkies who were too weak to stay away from heroin. This notion that some people have that everyone should "start back at Zero" is childish & asinine.
@VicInNocal We live in a representative democracy, meaning our representatives get to decide whose money it is. And it sure isn't the rich guy's childrens' money. The reason most people are doing so badly right now is that the top 1% get over half the income, the worst inequality since before Teddy Roosevelt (not even FDR; Teddy). Don't say rich people earn their money if you want to keep taxes low on inherited wealth, as then even equality of opportunity is a joke.
Obama is a Republican. People need to start a third party for real not like the tea party who are really just republicans. We are going back to the 1870's folks. I hope you like it when the most basic public services are cut off.
I donated to Obama's campaign, tried to talk everyone I know into voting for him and had great hopes when he won the election. This is the final deal breaker. I will not vote for Obama again, nor for any politician who represents my part of the country who votes for this tax cut including Sen. Al Franken. Obama is in bed with Wall Street, powerful bankers and lied to us throughout his campaign. Enough is enough.

i am a big olbermann fan....but keith is wrong for ripping obama here.....obama did not have 60 senate votes bc of douche bags like webb, lieberman and nelson.
obama folded his losing hand at the correct time and cut his losses.
@rebjiii So if one can't cut taxes only for the middle class, you don't cut taxes at all. Under no circumstances do you cut taxes for the super-rich, whose dominance of the country's wealth as no time in over 100 years is the reason the middle class is doing so poorly.
@rebjiii Yes, I agree with Bernie Sanders and Keith Olbermann (and the few Democrats who backed Sanders' filibuster). Letting all the tax cuts expire would be better than keeping the huge tax cuts for the rich and, along with the other tax cuts, defunding the government. Defunding the government has been the right-wing's plan all along, and their dream was to accomplish it under a Democrat.
@CQ9 ive never met a poor person that provides jobs or that donates to charity. what makes you think you're entitled to my hard earned money? this government wasn't created for everyone to be "equal". it was created for everyone to have an equal opportunity. you obviously don't understand that and if you don't like it you should leave. quit relying on handouts and create some personal responsibility

You do realize even though you may live in a poverty area ALOT of people live in the over $250,000 tax bracket and they pay more of the taxes then most of us do and create 100% of the jobs. Could you imagine all that taxation on your success if you weren't born with a silver spoon. I'm a libertarian, i think Obama did the right thing (never thought i'd say that). You Democrats whine and won't be pleased till we are all riding bikes and are communists. Wahhh Wahhhh!!!!!
The terrible words have for the time being been pronounced against this administration. "Thou art weighed in the balance and found wanting." And do not suppose that this is the end, this is only the beginning of the reckoning. This is only the first sip of a bitter cup which will be proffered to us year by year unless by a supreme recovery of moral health and political vigor. We will rise again and take our stand for what is right!
I'm disappointed in Obama for tryin to cut a deal to the Greedy Old Party. These are the same republicans that don't give a damn about the middle and low class, the same republicans that wants Obama to fail as president. It's like giving your soul to the devil.
@LittleRockElevators People around me get mad for saying the thing that you are saying, just because he's black I'm not give his ass a pass.If he comes across weak and wrong on the issues I'm going to get off in his ass.Olbermann is right on all points, this dude bow down to the rich.
@mightyblack1 Most people I talked to have said what happend to the Obama we knew in 2008. As far as the rich going to create job is concern, I'm pretty sure there's a few rich people that may create jobs but chances are they going to hold on to that money so they can get another house or car.
Right On Kieth! A year ago, I would have never dreamed, let alone think what I am about to say...but at this moment in time I say....Throw the bum out! Has there ever been a president that has broken this many campaign promises? What an absolute disappointment.
the important thing to realize is that democracy in the USA is now a myth and a joke. We have a ruling elite class of extreme wealth. The USA is now by the wealthy, for the wealthy.
Agreed. This 250k tax was one of his main "talking points" and now he's just giving in. Very disappointed. Guess Democrats better start lining up possible candidates for 2012.
@piadox, remember, guys like Olbermann (and his counterparts on the Right) thrive on conflict and controversy.
We move forward on action from compromise and consensus.
Could those earning $250k a year or more (and especially those earning $1M+) survive paying another 10% in income taxes? Sure. Was Obama a weak horse-trader this time? Yup.
But , if you're a Dem, searching for 2012 primary opponents now will hurt the President on the next deal.
@Leatherbubba Why not? I couldn't pick out any racist comments by Olbermann; he's just his usual self. I think Democrats cling to Obama too much. He lost my vote long ago.
I agree 100% with what Mr. Olbermann said and double that again! As far as the "compromise" aka the capitulation, what Joey Ramone said, "I'M AGAINST IT!!!"
Hooray! Obama is our 5th consecutive Republican president. When can we actually vote a true Democrat in office. One with balls. One with integrity. One who cares more about his base and less about "bipartisanship". We voted you in Mr. President because we want you to fight for OUR values. Not comprimise to the party that didn't listen to us for the prior 8 years of your administration.
The incentive for the rich to spend their money is the same as for you and me: value for the dollar spent.
You and I and Bill Gates all get to see the same ballgame. Yes, he's got more bux, but he earned them. If it'll make you feel better, give $1 to Salvation Army and figure out how much Bill has to donate to match you, relative to your respective net worths.
@LogicOverTheRight, I love your baseball game example and if you'll allow me, I'd like to join you and Bill Gates there.
Imagine first, we're at a high school game. At the gate we have some cute giggly girls with a mason jar and a fold up table and we put in a couple bucks or maybe a $5. And Bill Gates? He writes a check for $5 Million and says "Buy yourself a new gym, kids!"
No.
But maybe he'll drop in a $20 and if he likes the game, he might send something later.
@LogicOverTheRight, next, you and Bill Gates and I go to a MLB game. We each pay for our own tix, as in your example. Where are we sittin'? Center field bleachers, right?
And we're havin' fun and people say to Bill, "man, did anyone ever say you look just like Bill Gates?
And he says "yeah, I hear that all the time, I wish I were..."
And we each buy a round and maybe it sets us back a little, but we got to go see a game with Bill Gates, we'll remember it the rest of our lives.
@LogicOverTheRight, finally, our bud Bill Gates calls us and says, "Hey, let's go to the All-Star Game." And we say, "Oh, gee Bill, that's too much. Come over to the house and we'll watch on TV and order pizza."
"No, no," answers Bill. "I got you covered. Chase's skybox, got your flight, ground transportation, hotel, it's all taken care of. It's in Arizona, by the way, hope you're ok with that."
Are you ok with that, Logic? Are you with Bill and me at the game?
@LogicOverTheRight, forgive me for having a little fun with you... I'll bet Bill Gates would invite us to the World Series or something else if the Arizona thing became an issue.
What's my point in all this?
-- It's good to be Bill Gates or to have a friend like him.
-- With one good idea, you or I could become wealthy, too -- then we can spend our money however we like.
-- Baseball is a cool vehicle for bringing all types of people together.
i am a big olbermann fan and obama supporter....but Olbermann is wrong here...Obama and the dems did not have 60 votes in the senate....Obama and the dems would have looked like chumps for extending this battle into jan and feb of 2011....Obama folded his losing hand at the right time and got the best deal/compromise he could get from boehner the hypocrite
By the way, this daisy quoting Churchill absolutely kills me. Oh Olbermann, if you were Churchill on his worst day you might be able to reach, oh at least 17 people with your ridiculous show. You have no clue what Winnie was you dopey blowhard that thinks you are even half the wordsmith he was. When does this moron realize he has no grasp on history? Again, please never go away you entertaining as hell, because of what little you know, dipshit.
@kittenagogo28 - During the first 150 yrs of our country almost all the tax burden fell upon the rich with Washington taxing carriages, pocket watches, & other things most likely owned by the wealthy & Jefferson taxing all things gold or silver & then you had Lincoln w/ his income tax & inheritance tax & even his asset tax where the rich had to list their most valuable items & at that time about 90% of the tax was on the richest 10%
Things have sure changed & the super rich now have it easy
@oddsox1919 - I respect your opinion, but if I buy a ticket to a baseball game (just an example), and Bill Gates buys a ticket at the same price, I am paying a higher tax rate.......a higher percentage of my money goes to taxes than Gates. I believe all taxes, with the exeption of a progressive federal income tax should be eliminated. If rich people aren't taxed on money they save, what incentive do they have to spend money?
So fun!!!!! There is nothing quite as satisfying to me as blue on blue crime! Has anyone seen my popcorn? Wait Olby, say it isn't so-have you now gone racist? Isn't that what those of us who understand basic econ and history were called when we questioned president genius? Hate to ask you moron leftists a good question, but here goes.....how does taxing, you call them the rich I call them my EMPLOYER, help you? And why are you so pissed? Were you looking for some cash or something?
I admire Obama's reasonableness and his normal willingness to compromise, but not when he's compromising with people who reap the benefits of a civil society but who don't want to pay for it, and who would be happy to see other people turned into debt-serfs.
As for people who think the govt has no claim on their money after they die because they earned it all by themselves, I guess they invented language, wrote the Constitution, and built everything we see around us, all by themselves.
@MrTakeBackAmerica : What you're talking about is called the inheritance tax.
It affects ONLY the top 0.3% of (very wealthy) individuals. And it affects only assets OVER $3.5 Million. If you have less than that, the tax DOES NOT AFFECT YOU.
It allows We the People to continue to pay for all the government services that those very wealthy people USED to accumulate their great wealth.
And it supports the Founders' idea that we shouldn't allow a multi-generational aristocracy to develop here.
The Republicans are squealing with delight over this compromise.
They get two years of tax cuts for the wealthy in exchange for a 13 month extension of unemployment benefits - AND Boehner doesn't have to face the wrath of the people on UE when he becomes speaker next year.
AND they get to chip away at Social Security funding!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Keith 'Underbite' Olbermann is an ignorant communist/fascist/socialist ugly piece of fecal matter who has NOT LEARNED THE LESSONS OF HISTORY. If he really wants to "spread the wealth around" he's got plenty of millions to start with. Lead by example. The rumor is that he's one of the most niggardly troglodytes on Earth with a butt the size of which would make the FLOTUS green with envy jealous. His ex-girlfriends say he's "hung like a thumbtack -- only smaller".
You obviously have NOT LEARNED THE LESSONS OF HISTORY either. Do you even realize that communism, fascism, and socialism are UTTERLY AND COMPLETELY DIFFERENT? Fascism is the antithesis of communism, you inbred, uneducated fuck. I'm not even going to address the second half of your post, which is one of the most meaningless and unintelligent bits of blather I have read in a long time. You call Olbermann ignorant. You, sir, are the DEFINITION of the word.
@johnhookk Is your mom and dad brother and sister because you sound like a retarded back woods inbred. Why don't you go fuck Rush Limbaugh up his fat ass you stupid loser. If only your mom had swallowed the world would be a much better place, but that dumb bitch got pregnant by her uncle.
Ok. As much as I agree, I have to ask this question.... "what is the alternative?" Let the fucking republicans grind the government into a halt.....??? a perpetual stalemate and get absolutely nothing else accomplished for the next 2 years? That's the issue here. The fucking republicunts don't care about you, they don't care about me...they ONLY care for the richest americans. But because STUPID fucking americans VOTE FOR THEM....this is what we get!!!!
@Hereticbooks That is all true, but does that me we all have to bow down too? Nope. Not gonna happen. What we need to do is ensure that Obama does not run again. That would be the best option. We need to hammer the point home to the Democrats - you work for us, we made you, and we can damn sure unmake you. You sell us out too many times, and we will unmake you. Remember that.

Sure! And get some moron like Palin? Another BUSH? Or some other teabagger asshole? Because that's what it boils down to. Once the democrats work against each other (which is what the republicans want), we lose. That's what happened in 1980. That's what happened in 2000. Think about it.
Mr Olberman thou protest too much. You have become so full of yourself that you actually believe what you say really means something. Last night I decided you should go to Fox. We have a president with a cool head, and you want him to act like you. Blessed are those who stay calm when others like you are losing their minds.
You should listen to your friend O'Donnell. He is calm and says it like it is and doesn't break a sweat. You cannot wait to do your ever loven comments, and explode. WRONG!
Mokumboi, I'm a Democrat, for your information. I equate Olbermann's never-ending venom spewing with Hannity's venom spewing. Hannity is a buffoon and a liar. Olbermann is completely inflexible and intolerant. Both of them hurt the country by rallying people to their banners of extremism. To a moderate, it is simply exhausting, not to mention unproductive. I blame cable's 24-hour news cycle. The needed something to fill the space...and came up with this shit.
I'll vote for someone new in the primary. Obama has already surrendered all his political capital, and is making our country look like like a bunch of idiots agen. I Voted for him to help fix the USA's reputation, but he is now failing at that too.
Everyone should send a message of support to Sen. Sanders that urges him to hold to his commitment to filibuster any bill giving tax cuts to the wealthy.
Utter, undiluted nonsense. Hannity lies like breathing and openly politics on air beholden to specific money. This is a typical right wing false equivalence.
The democrats keep losing the fight on the house floor and senate floor.... and then they expect the president to punt???.....even Obama gets tired of losing....lol....and the funny thing is, no one cares that unemployment benefits are extended....just that the rich are getting a tax break....unbelievable!
Pelosi wanted to do this in the summer when it would have helped the Democrats make the case for re-election and this *brilliant leader* (sarcasm) sided with conservadems to kick the can. How'd that work out? He did the same thing on the public option...this guy is always a day late a a dollar short.

Keith Ripped Obama a new one, and he was exactly true, it is odd how Obama gets angry at his base constantly and not the obstructionist who cares more about politics than people.
I don't know why people think that black voters are not pulling away from this president? If there is someone else that might come to challenge him then black voters would not be so blinded by race that they wouldn't vote they're own interest.
Can't stand Obama. Sellout day 1. Dumb democrats. ALL of this, every single bit, traces back to DLC & Bill Clinton blowing up Howard Dean's campaign run in 04 -- so they could put numbskull Kerry in, & lose -- & Bill could let Hillary run in 08 -- But unexpectedly the Professor does his 2 book tour & is suddenly the favorite 4 years before his turn, so to speak. From DAY 1 in 07 he was adamant -- NO IMPEACHMENT... adamant "Turn the Page". In office: courts GOP. He's a loser. Set the nation BACK
Unfortunately I bet there were a lot of Americans watching that who didn't know who Chamberlain was, and sadly, even more who still don't know who Chamberlain was.
Just so that you know, Neville Chamberlain was leader of the conservative party in the UK, and Prime Minister from 1937-40. He famously claimed to have secured "Peace in our time" when he capitulated to Hitler's demands. This was just before WW2, give that man a jelly baby !
@TheHachmom - Sales Tax is either unfair, or a complete bother. Do you want to bring your W-2 form with you everytime you buy something to prove your tax bracket? How do you tax people for money they save? If the answer to those things is "you don't," then you are taxing poor people more than rich people. That is unfair.
Make the National Sales Tax non-regressive by exempting rents, groceries, meds, utilities, the essentials that make up most of what the poor spend.
3% on the rest. So everyone pays, but the rich pay more.
Next, use the monies collected to fund social security and medicare.
That allows us to eliminate payroll taxes. Thus working people get a 7.65% pay hike and so do the employers who hire them. No better stimulus than that.
Hillary would win in a primary, but get shallacked in the General! No doubt that this President still has the support of the Black Community and a lot of loyal (white) supporters.
Btw, since MSNBC is so "color blind"-why won't they ever have a Black fill in when their host takes a leave? There are plenty of qualified Blacks out there. Melissa Harris-Lacewell Joe Madison, etc.. This is what Repubs speak about. MSNBC use blacks on their shows only to denounce Fox when a race question arises.
Yah, I'm tired of NoBama, too. I voted for him, but he has let me down in a big way. There has been no 'leadership' from him, much less an understanding of the mandate given to him by his constituency. He has schmoozed Republicans, given ground on issues to them, kept us in Afghanistant (out by 2014? What?!) and not presented a palpable plan for governing. In short, so far, he sucks as a President.
@wanketta You're so full of it! You said that you voted for "NoBama"? Yeah, and some of my best friends are black.
Why are you surprised about Afghanastan? I do recall the man campaigning on esculating the troops in there and withdrawing in Iraq. NoBama? I'm sure you didn't vote for him. Mandate? They (MSNBC/constiuents) were bitching about the 99ers. He listened, and know we have this Melon head clown saying, "Oh, Boehner was stalling. He wasn't REALLY goint to stop Unemployment Insurance."
I do think that sales tax are the most fare across the board, because people with more money buy more things (and more expensive things). It also is more equitable because with the exception of non-profits and licensed busnesses there is no evading them.
@oddsox1919 You missed the point. Employment is dependent on demand and if the number of people who have no income is increasing, demand decreases and employers are less willing to hire.
This has nothing to do with compassion. It's about a simple reality of politics. If people don't spend, the economy shrinks and the amount of money available to spend...and I mean spend on things like food, clothing and shelter...continues to decrease. Leaving a significant portion of the population to fall into poverty, even temporarily, because the economy has contracted is bad politics and bad economics.
@oddsox1919 You've missed the point again. Economic actors, be they individuals or corporations, can't spend money they don't have or can't acquire. If unemployment is high and the credit markets are tight, the economy contracts, unemployment stays high and is likely to increase, further decreasing spending by both individuals and corporations.
This isn't about carts and horses. Politics and economics are interdependent. Fail to treat them as such and your policy fails.
Keith Olbermann is now blasting at the President just because Obama makes a deal with Republicans?????? Wow! Seem like he wants Democrats to win all the time. But, Olbermann is a fool.
@smekese if you just going to cuss at me, what you take a government class, you pinhead, because this is freedom of speech. You don't have the right to shut me or anybody up for opinion that you may not agree on.
You know that little currency mistake of the Secret Service made? Well, Bernanke prints $70 Billion of funny money in about a day. He says that he doesn't. Do you believe him? I wouldn't be too panicked by the GOP payoff of the top 1%. They amortize all this nonsense by paying off our debts in devalued dollars, anyway. That's always been the plan. What we need is for Bernie Sanders to filibuster the bill until we can get the 99ers covered, too. This will return $1.60 for each dollar invested.
It was more than just unemployment benefits extended. It's also keeping taxes from going up in 2011 on the middle-class. While I appreciate his indignation, we wouldn't be even having this debate if the base wouldn't have stayed home and so-called Progressive democrats would have mounted a campaign t challenge Blue Dogs and republicans. You want to pass a Progressive agenda? Deliver a progressive Congress just for ONCE in the history of this coountry.
why did we lose all those jobs in the first place?
It appears that corporate america and Canada are experiencing gross revenue growth
How do we get an increase in growth with fewer employees?

How do the poor creat jobs??? Rich spend more and invest more. The top 1% of people already pay 40% of all the taxes and the top 10%pay 71%!!! The rich pay for basically all the taxes when the people who live on welfare take money from people because they get more than they give. The current tax policy already penalizes the rich and those who worked hard, but the people on welfare, who sometimes don't even look for a job, are rewarded with tiny taxes. This is nonsence.
ton0827 1 year ago
@ton0827
Why do you want to tax people on welfare?
"Working hard" is great, but nobody is making millions of dollars by logging or working in a coal mine. People who make over 250 thousand dollars a year are people who work white-collar jobs, people who have every comfort imaginable.
Think of it this way - who can afford to pay more taxes, people with Mercedes Benzes and mansions, or people working at Pizza Hut and struggling to keep afloat? Try being poor sometime, then get back to me.
JunkCCCP 1 year ago
@JunkCCCP um, I am a high schooler and I have to say I agree with you. In this country, people that our rich pay a significant amount more than the poor. What is fair is that someone making 50,000 will pay 5,000, while someone making 500,000 thousand should pay 50,000. That person pays the same amount as the other person gets, but that is as fair as it can get. What happend under our system: 50,000 pays 5,000, while 500,000 pays 175,000. That is 35 times more! Definitely fair...
ton0827 1 year ago
@ton0827
JunkCCCP 1 year ago
@JunkCCCP Well, if the flat rate tax were used, it would eliminate the need for the IRS. Your taxes would be about half a page long. It really would be the fairest system because if the rate fluctuates, all class's will feel the pain or feel the good. Also, eliminating all subsides and tax credits will help with the cost of it, plus it would ad to the simple and fairness aspect. Also, I know that everyone is anti-rich, but 70% of those who make more than 250k, are small businesses.
ton0827 1 year ago
@ton0827
JunkCCCP 1 year ago
@JunkCCCP The Flat Tax would work and I am right with you, it should have been implemented by now. Russian is a prime case of the success of a flat tax; the real revenues from its Personal Income Tax rose by 25.2% in the first year after the country introduced a flat tax, followed by a 24.6% increase in the second year, and a 15.2% increase in the third year. Many other westerm European countries have flat taxes as well, all with similar success stories.

That means people with money that they're willing and able to spend.

VicInNocal 1 year ago
@VicInNocal The person receiving the inheritance did *zero* work for the money. That's who's taxed in estate taxes, and those are people who did nothing for the money but be born into a rich family. What did Bill Gates' children do to deserve to be idle rich? Even Gates recognizes this in his case and is leaving most of his money to charity.
CQ9 1 year ago
@CQ9 So what? It's the rich guy's money. Not yours or mine. He can choose to give it to his children (after all, they were probably the main motivation in his life), & have them oversee it, rather than have the government take it from him & WASTE it away on a stupidly expensive war or Wall St bailouts or rehab clinics for piece of shit junkies who were too weak to stay away from heroin. This notion that some people have that everyone should "start back at Zero" is childish & asinine.
VicInNocal 1 year ago
@VicInNocal We live in a representative democracy, meaning our representatives get to decide whose money it is. And it sure isn't the rich guy's childrens' money. The reason most people are doing so badly right now is that the top 1% get over half the income, the worst inequality since before Teddy Roosevelt (not even FDR; Teddy). Don't say rich people earn their money if you want to keep taxes low on inherited wealth, as then even equality of opportunity is a joke.
CQ9 1 year ago
@CQ9 so if my parents own property and my name is in the will it should be given to charity?
MIXMASTAPWN 1 year ago
Mr. President, here's what you do next with the new Congress:
Propose the higher income tax rate at 39.6% for those earning $250k or more.
Include the $5M/35% Estate Tax formula.
For both, add an inflation allowance to prevent bracket creep.
Then make it ALL, including tax cuts for the middle & lower class, PERMANENT.
The rich know they'll make out BETTER 'cuz they can plan around the increases once they know they're fixed.
The Repubs will whine and moan, but they'll go for it, watch.

4:42, the Estate Tax.
KO's spin is a $5M exemption/35% rate makes a lower tax than in '09, which it does.
But remember, there's NO estate tax in 2010, so this is actually an increase.
At the same time, with no action taken, the exemption reverts back to $1M with a 55% tax thereafter.
Thus the forced liquidation of many small businesses and family farms to settle estates. Ugly and unfair.
The new estate tax helps small business.
A good trade, one of the better parts of this deal.

@Wade1492, the Far-Left thinks a fair Estate Tax would be at a majority rate (55% or higher) with a low exclusion ($1M or less) or none.
Tea Party folk think only a 0% Estate Tax is fair.
Neither side will move in a "fairness" debate.
But, fortunately, cooler heads are likely to prevail here.
Moderate Dems like a $3.5M exemption + 45% rate, while most Repubs favor the $5M/35% formula.
This newly proposed Estate Tax deal will help small business.
And small business creates jobs.
oddsox1919 1 year ago 8
@MrTakeBackAmerica : What you're talking about is called the inheritance tax.
It affects ONLY the top 0.3% of (very wealthy) individuals. And it affects only assets OVER $3.5 Million. If you have less than that, the tax DOES NOT AFFECT YOU.
It allows We the People to continue to pay for all the government services that those very wealthy people USED to accumulate their great wealth.
And it supports the Founders' idea that we shouldn't allow a multi-generational aristocracy to develop here.

Both Rush and KO are high-intellect bullies who drink from the same extreme sippy-cup.
The difference between them is the colour of their Kool-Aid.

6:58 KO's doubting take on the political consequences of this compromise bears watching.
Chances are, come 2012, it'll mean nothing , except that we'll have to repeat the process with another lame duck Congress.
What matterrs now and will again in 2012 is jobs. And this is not a jobs bill.

LogicOverTheRight 1 year ago
@LogicOverTheRight, @theHachmom,
Make the National Sales Tax non-regressive by exempting rents, groceries, meds, utilities, the essentials that make up most of what the poor spend.
3% on the rest. So everyone pays, but the rich pay more.
Next, use the monies collected to fund social security and medicare.
That allows us to eliminate payroll taxes. Thus working people get a 7.65% pay hike and so do the employers who hire them. No better stimulus than that.
That'll create jobs.
oddsox1919 1 year ago 3

In short, so far, he sucks as a President.
wanketta 1 year ago

KO's mistaken about the SS tax holiday.
It's gonna drive SS further in the hole, but the trouble is, a 2% cut won't help enough.
Weak tea.
I HOPE it sets a precedent and leads to eventual elimination of payroll taxes in favor of a National Sales Tax.

the Unemployed create jobs? nonsense.
Small business creates jobs.
Not the rich. Not government. Not Wall Street.
Small business.
oddsox1919 1 year ago 3
@oddsox1919 You missed the point. Employment is dependent on demand and if the number of people who have no income is increasing, demand decreases and employers are less willing to hire.
ancientwell 1 year ago
@ancientwell, I'm as compassionate as the next guy, but giving money to people just because they're likely to spend it is foolish.
If that's the answer, give all the next stimulus to teenage kids.
Sadly, that's just what we may end up with
--a 2nd stimulus, a big QE3 and for what?
A feel-good sugar rush and then we're back in 2 years with another lame-duck Congress (Olbermann's right about that part) in the same predicament.
The only real solution is to help small business.
oddsox1919 1 year ago 3
@oddsox1919
This has nothing to do with compassion. It's about a simple reality of politics. If people don't spend, the economy shrinks and the amount of money available to spend...and I mean spend on things like food, clothing and shelter...continues to decrease. Leaving a significant portion of the population to fall into poverty, even temporarily, because the economy has contracted is bad politics and bad economics.
ancientwell 1 year ago
@ancientwell, in reading your post above, you've put the political cart before the economic horse.
Good politics follows from sound economic policy, not vice versa.
As I posted earlier, the rich and poor alike are motivated to spend their money based upon perceived value.
That's why the Repubs will go for the tax increase I proposed earlier on this thread -- in exchange for stability.
oddsox1919 1 year ago
@oddsox1919 You've missed the point again. Economic actors, be they individuals or corporations, can't spend money they don't have or can't acquire. If unemployment is high and the credit markets are tight, the economy contracts, unemployment stays high and is likely to increase, further decreasing spending by both individuals and corporations.
This isn't about carts and horses. Politics and economics are interdependent. Fail to treat them as such and your policy fails.
ancientwell 1 year ago
@ancientwell, alas, people & corporations spending "money they don't have" is precisely how we got into this mess.
But moving on, yes, I understand your point about money in motion.
And we agree that high unemployment is the paramount concern.
Where we appear to differ is on the solution.
Small business creates jobs, helping them is the answer. That's the bottom line.
The politicians are starting to wake up to this, but it remains the Truth whether they see it or not.
Merry Christmas!
