We hearing no nothing of ASL because mostly, the deaf talk to the deaf. I found out deaf concerns by accident and because a lot of deaf women happen to be cute. Don't assume we are evil, just assume we know nothing about you, especially if the medium of communication is always within your community. ASL looks fantastic. Deaf culture is interesting too. Sorry we are ignorant but that is reality. Deaf can write, hearing can read. Deaf can protest. Your numbers are convincing. All ppl are lazy.
I agree with everything but not the ASL part. ASL doesn't use English grammar thus deaf students have poor English. Change ASL to SEE because ASL really is French sign language. If you look at FSL, it's almost exactly the same! :O
@QuicksilverdotFX I don't know if you're aware of this, but immigrants who learn English as a second or even third language often have similar English structure to Deaf students. You'd be surprised. But the mistake people make is in blaming ASL for the "poor English" that many Deaf students have. There are many Deaf whose first language is ASL who also develop strong English skills. Most commonly those who have "poor English" are those who haven't had FULL access to...
@shelpotma1 Actually, no. Quite the opposite. I have never met anyone who is an ASL purist with at least decent English skills. I've met a great share of deaf people as well.
@QuicksilverdotFX continued from last comment... FULL access to a complete language, be it ASL or English until later in life. That is one of the biggest issues we face in Deaf education: Many Deaf children finally get access to ASL LATER than they should have.
@shelpotma1 That isn't what I see in ASD, FSDB or ISD. I've spoken to deaf educators about the language barrier among the deaf people. They agree it is ASL that usually gives them poor English structure. Why teach them ASL to begin with? ASL is derived from French sign language. FSL uses same grammatical structure as written French. British sign language uses same grammatical structure as written British. Why must America be different?
You can't just blame education system for failing deaf children. Parents are responsible for nurturing their children in first five years before they go into education system. We need to support parents in learning ASL so they can communicate fluently with their deaf children.
@dmckeenz Yes, parents are responsible for nurturing their children for the first five years before sending them into the school system, but it is the system (combo of educational and medical) that have been influencing parental choice in whether their kids go in an oral, mainstream, or Deaf schools. Even the Schools of the Deaf have historically had a monolingual education at the expense of ASL. So, the educational system does play a big part here.
@dmckeenz Continued... Yes, I agree that we need to support the parents in learning ASL... so that is why the educational system needs revamping towards bilingualism... and the medical professionals educated as well.

I agree!!! You gave a perfect statement! ASL isn't failed us. It is US. We can be clearly or not clearly in communication. It has nothing to do with language like you said! I am with you all the way!!
You did it again! You ain't no dumb blonde! Important to note that those attitudes and ideas about ASL you mention existed since BEFORE Stokoe's time. And also important point about how ASL is viewed as a "last resort", AFTER the educational system has FAILED them and DISRUPTED their ability to understand and use language (ASL or English) fully in all its nuances and features!
I watched your vlog last night and agreed with you. I just shared this in Facebook not long ago because this is worthwhile for everyone's time to watch your vlog and think twice before they make those stupid determination that ASL fails. Sheesh...fail? Sheesh.....*shakes head*
I know as not fascinate some people can dare to make new far-fetched title, story or twister can be lead damage to many thing and educations. I feel so bad and sorrow for some people has weak mind be easy taken to hear! I have understandably and charity.
If i ever have a deaf kid, I will not force a hearing implant on them and I will learn ASL. I hope one day, I get a chance to learn it. ;).

@QuicksilverdotFX A challenge for you. Take an ASL linguistics class or two, then revisit your comment and see if you still feel the same.

Yes, by teaching parents ASL, they will become natural ally for bilingual education and put pressure on education system to make changes, etc.

@DrDonGCSUS EXACTLY, Don! ASL is not a fix-it. It's a language, and children MUST be able to access language fully from infancy.
