it is the vice that no one is living in their skin, and forgeting that they only see your body, the one you feel connected to yet need a mirror. maybe he'd get how crazy it sounds to woman speculating on life who has a physically bigger person tell her she is not human, no soul and yet claims for himself physical superiorty, so she thinks right you are more physical, create machines, and have the nerve to question mine?
Watts was brilliant. He was ahead of his time with some of the ideas he's discussing here, especially about god and science. Fortunately others today are promoting similar ideas, but not with the same following as Watts as far as I can tell.

@guitarpick678 The illusion that we are at war with nature can be a difficult conflict to resolve in the mind :-) The power to resolve such conflicts of the mind is in the now, the present moment.
Another reason that we attack nature is because nature wasnt kind to man. So we started to "shield" ourselves from it. Then, once we were separate, we defined ourselves as separate... Its probably the reason early religions were formed in reflection of this. I love this dude, man! Alan Watts!
science is predicting the next most probable. as we go from classical to quantum, all that changes is the approximation. we translate these measurements in to equations and terms that are abstractions of reality and to simple for the job. eastern thought generally emphasizes the importance of not confusing the map with the territory. spirituality does not need science and science does not need spirituality but people need both. read the tao of physics

For those of you who enjoyed listening to this seminar, you should know that it is only a part of the series of lectures by Alan Watts called "Out of Your Mind". In fact, this is only part of one section that is titled "The Nature of Consciousness". I definitely recommend you give it a listen. If you want to DL it, enter this into google: "Alan Watts Out Of Your Mind Series Full Rapidshare Download", go to the first link, scroll down and follow the two links under where it says Download Links
"when u want to destroy someone,u always define them as up-people"
just like the MSM tries to show less developed countries or countries with certain religions as savages,so that wars can be waged without feeling guilty about it.
FREEWILL!!! i've been obsessed with this idea since i was a child. personally, i have no valid reason or evidence of freewill in the universe. it just doesnt add up.
... it's great to see other people interested in this subject.
Wrong. Good health and clear thinking need not necessarily point in the direction of a realization that choice is not an illusion. Plenty of healthy, clear thinking philosophers have espoused arguments against the idea of free will. It has occured to me that you are not aware of the arguments for what's called "determinism." But thank you for your input and considerate discussion nonetheless.
Not when we can make choices. This means free choice determines outcomes.
It is a fact we can choose. It is a fact choice determines outcomes. It is a fact that choice is made by free-will and thus not causually predetermined as a locked destiny .
It may also be a fact that any possible human choice is predetermined by causal factors that create those choices and that therefore the ability to choose is really illusory. Don't take me the wrong way, I'm not disagreeing with you I'm only thinking out loud. Regrettably though, I'm not quite convinced by your argument.
I think the answer to this common metaphysical problem may lie in what Alan Watts says regarding free will, that "man is free to the extent that he knows who he is."
Although things do happen the way they will happen; choice and choosing cannot be predetermined or illusory. "Man is free to choose to the extent of his knowledge that guides him.
I may have said can't or can only when explaining a non-psychotic or mentally ill person. Only in good health & clear thinking can one understand that choice is not an illusion. Why? It has been that way in all of life since forever. Even animals choose where how & why to build their nest here rather than there. Is their choosing also an illusion to you? We are not forced to pick & choose; that would negate the power of free will. More importantly is what it is you freely choose ie good or evil.
However there 'is' free will. Your free will is a choice to reply to my post. All of human history is full of free will choices unless one is oppressed by tyrants and dictators etc. Even animals and insects have free will.

With modern information presented in Quantum Physics, I refer to science as "The study of the changes that take place in the universe once observed."

The sneer against the culture he grew in is palpable. Perhaps because this lecture comes on the heel of the social break of the 60's.

Free will is the relaxing constraint of God.
In other words the creative ability of all living things to pick and choose through circumstances presented!
EGMAG 2 years ago
But what if in fact there is no such thing as free-will and every human action is causally pre-determined?

Why? You keep saying "it can't be this, it can be that" but you don't give any explanation...
I understand you think that choice can't be illusory. My question is, why not?
