  • AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE OI OI OI

  • "Their memory liveth forever"

  • thumbs up if you cried

  • What this video lacks is the memorial set up by the turks to those who died there, the most magniminous statement made about any conflict, to read itsw words is to be moved

  • I love this song<3

  • What really matters about that war was that it was an imperialist war. It was fought between contending empires in order to gain dominance and carve up the world and it resources. And guess who were the cannon fodder, thats right the working classes of those empires and the song captures that well. If you forget that and want to argue over detail you'll not see the wood for the trees.

  • What can you say

  • seems some of you have never been to war, if you did, maybe you would be more humble, just a thought?

  • The song reaches to the heart of a sentiment that reflects the personal truths of war. There may be glory in the history books but the sacrifice that makes the statistics is personal and not national. The individual who served, the parents, siblings, spouses and children all bear their own grief in solitude. That is the song. It is not a history of the Gallipoli Campaign and so there is room for poetic licence. The historical errors take nothing from the theme, sentiments and song.

  • 'Never knew there were worse things than dying . . ' - lovely, heartbreaking song, and good to hear the words from Shane,.

  • yeah ,history is shit ,but this is a beautifulsong with a very personal account of sorrow.

  • Beautifully written song. I'm sure we all have brave forefather's who died for someone else's ideals. At the end of the day it is such a shame and tragedy that so many young men died in so many pointless conflicts.

  • So sad also for our German Kamerads.

  • amazing song and what a performance

  • I am angered when I see the bickering over petty things while it seems they ignore the fact that a single soul lost in war is priceless and should be honored

  • They went with songs to the battle, they were young.

Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.

They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,

They fell with their faces to the foe.

  • god bless the pogues

  • @boinng100 What a strange comment?

  • All of these men were very brave lets move on about the song.

  • I stumbled upon this song yesterday and was moved to tears. I’m saddened by the disrespectful comments I see. The men and women who've sacrificed so much to their countries’ call to “duty” have had no political agenda but to serve. To this day, those are the people who keep you free to whine and complain and do nothing to improve the world. Yes, war stinks. To the person who wrote “peace” and “justice” in the same sentence: you seem to be a good argument for lifeguards at the gene pool.

  • @litlbitmorluv

Nice pro-eugenics joke you've plagiarised there.

Your efforts to "improve the world" include posting self-righteous comments on youtube evidently. You deserve a Nobel Prize.

  • The entire campaign was the deluded idia of Sir W Churchill but the army and Navy didnt co-ordinate their effort . Very sad chapter for all concerned.

  • Nationalistic BS aside it is allways sad when someones brother/son is killed some of us will not forget your selfless input to a needless war

  • Jonno thanks for the info I'm american and from your post I found out the real facts about the war thank you, for making me look into the past to thank the Heros that died

  • @MrEnchain

You are welcome. Sadly someone keeps marking my comment as spam ( removing it from the page ) and only the uploader/owner can lock it in by pressing "Not Spam". They don't want the truth to come out. I don't know why because the Anzacs WERE heroes but not at Suvla Bay. I have nothing but respect for all the soldiers involved including the Turks. Some of them cried as they mowed down the young Aussies at Anzac Cove.

  • It's a lovely song full of good intentions but sadly it's facts are incorrect. The "Heroes of Suvla" were Irish and English troops NOT Australian. The Aussies and New Zealanders were miles away on another beach entirely called Anzac Cove. They were all brave young men regardless but it's disappointing that the bloke who wrote the song got it wrong.

  • @Jonno1955 It was writen by Eric Bogle. A emeregrated

    who move to Austraila

  • @Jonno1955 it's a song about the Irish and English troops who were put in Australia as punitive action - don't think the song got it wrong, I think it's understood that it's about an Irishman's experience in joining the war from "Van Diemen's Land."

  • @Jonno1955

"And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" is a song written by Scottish-born Australian singer-songwriter Eric Bogle in 1971. The song describes war as futile and gruesome, while criticising those who seek to glorify it. This is exemplified in the song by the account of a young Australian soldier who is maimed at the Battle of Gallipoli during the First World War.

The song incorporates the melody and a few lines of lyrics of "Waltzing Matilda" at its conclusion.

  • @30Ciaran

I can read Wikipedia too. I think we all knew that already. If people read the whole Wikipedia article they wouldn't be arguing that the Anzac troops were at Suvla Bay.

  • My Family went in 1850.....

Lost a fortune- I love Australia.

  • TO THE PILLOCK THAT KEEPS FLAGGING JONNO'S COMMENT AS SPAM

I don't why you are trying to sweep the truth under the carpet. IF you had a brain you would realise that however hard you try you can't rewrite history. It's there in the history books and remembered by the families of the English and Irish men killed at Suvla Bay and The Australian and New Zealanders killed at Anzac Cove. What you are doing is an insult to their memories..

Ok Birdbrain you can flag this comment as well now.

  • @tomatoboyau

I've no idea what Jonno wrote, but history books are not infallible, and when it comes to wars, history books are often partisan and highly politicized.

    btw...there's no apostrophe in "its"

  • @lynchie3000 when "it's" is a contraction of "it is" there IS an apostrophe. Attend to the beam in thine own eye before looking to the mote in your brothers.

  • It's a lovely song full of good intention but sadly it's facts are incorrect. The "Heroes of Suvla" were Irish and English troops NOT Australian. The Aussies and New Zealanders were on another beach entirely called Anzac Cove. They were all brave young men regardless but it's disappointing that Eric got it wrong.

  • 3 from a family of cowards?

  • the most perfect song on Veteran's Day. No matter what country you live in.

  • I'm from the US & had only heard this as a childhood song--as I looked up the history--this is so very moving. To the honor of the men who fought in that campaign--to all men and who women who put their lives on the line for freedom

  • They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

    We will remember them

  • Well some get to guard the Texas OClub and accuse his opponent that fought of slacking. Most disgraceful episode in the history of American politics.

  • Fuck who wrote it,sang it or played it on a tin whistle.

Its a song that should remind us that we didn't have to go do it and respect those who did.

  • Most requested song on my last holiday in 'Ned Kelly' bar, Pattaya Thailand.

Aussie, Kiwi, Scots, Irish and Brits.

Wow, what a song and especially because my Gramp was wounded badly there.

Some songs really cut to the bone.

  • @dobella YOU KNOW IT MY FRIEND MY GRAMPS LOST A EYE AT SUVLA BAY !! RESPECT TO ALL OUR HEROES THAT FOUGHT THERE WARS THEN AND NOW !! YET AGAIN LIONS LED BY FUCKING DONKEYS !!WHERE ARE THE BEAN COUNTERS WHEN IT GETS HOT ? FROM A VETERAN FROM IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN !! 2 BATT PARA REG NOW THAT I HOME IM SURPLUS TO REQUIREMENT !!

  • what has been forced upon the lives and bodies of fine beautiful, strong, healthy young men in every country is sick. for nothing. for fuck all. for the benefit of a dirty twisted minority. this song is sung in the soul of the average man, the fucked over man, in the proud man.... up ireland, and long live the name of shane macgowan. the sessions is over bois. but i'll still raise my glass in yere names GOD BLESS KID

  • rot in hell woodrow wilson.

  • big up to all the boys over there be they english aussie nzs and french they all shed bled there this is a fitting tribute to all our are lost heroes !!

  • There are loads of versions of this song, but this is the one that makes me cry time and time and again.

  • Will we ever learn? i doubt it.

    Thanks for this.

-my best to the Aussies and the Kiwis.

    -Bill in Canada

  • Great song with true meaning.

Ironic really that McGowan wanted to sing anything in support of the British Commonwealth though, he's more famous for his pro - Republican views and songs, making the British out to be the guilty party...................................

  • Only the dead have seen an end to war

  • Yes war sucks, its good that is so terrible. I regret to say that it is at times an evil that must be waged. I feel that many are avoidable, yet some no matter how hard you tried could not have been avoided. I think that is just human nature. Terrible shame. Great song though

  • Keine Helden..nur immer Opfer..in jedem Scheisskrieg..es giebt keine Ehre..für kein Land der Welt..nur schreiende Opfer!!

  • shit War..Greetings from Germany

  • @miromanism hey german fella how are you , big respect to all who died here , the Ozzys , NZ,S and also the Turks..but it would also be nice to remember the English soldiers who died at Gallipoli because more of them died than all the others put together and no one seems to care..

  • Three people missed the "like" button.

This song is heart-rendingly sad. Thank you for posting this version.

  • Fucking lovw dis song :P

  • amazing version by the pogues. How can anyone dislike this song?

  • My grand grand father died there in gallipoli,i'm from Tukey and i have borned in gallipoli either.I respect EVERY soldier who gave their life there cause it was the last war of real gentlemans.

    With my best regards.

  • Thank you for posting this!

Such an important event in history, but how many people know about it?

    Or the Boer War?

    Well done!

  • This battle was controlled by radio,by a general in a ship out in the bay.

  • Great song. I like this version the best. Shane MacGowan 's got that gravelly voice.

  • The politically alliterate, are an endless source of cannon fodder for the bidding of the rich and the powerful, by becoming politically educated, wild horses wouldn't get you to go to a foreign country to wage war. Unfortunately there is a deliberate dumbing down process taking place through the media which is owned by? you guessed it. so the cannon fodder supply is being restocked.

  • Great song but could somebody tell oirish scots it is not a oirish " folk republican " song it is a song honouring the memory of heroes who gave Their lives for king and country when parts of the UK were holding up post offices 6months later

  • @MrBigal1690 You're a cretin.

  • Join no army run by traitors.

Look to your kin, near and far, and protect them.

  • Raw, raw as war.....Lest We Forget.

  • "Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side now here in this country of ours... you, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land. They have become our sons as well"

    M K Ataturk

  • @drdogan1 Very generous sentiments, Mr. Atatrurk. But the grim truth is that both the Jonnies & Mehmets were slaughtered for no reason except to enrich the filthy rich of all the warring nations in a horrific war that led directly to WWII & the Cold War. I weep for the grandfather I never met who also died in the criminal war and left a family which berely survived the savage aftermath of the war with permanent scars. Till we face the truth, the wars will continue till all are killed.

  • Face the truth & Occupy the World, dumping all war profiteers with people who substitute peace and justice & recognize that we are all brothers and sisters. Only by realizing that the conflict is between we the 99% and the criminal 1% can we survive. Join the Occupy Movement! Save yourself & your kids. Piss on all the warmongers and all of the statues they've erected to themselves. Sorry I didn't piss on the statue of Bomber Harris in London, & his counterparts worldwide.

  • @drdogan1 Bless you for that.

  • damn straight.... johnny i hardly knew ye.... war is a traitor to the working man!

  • damn straight.... johnny i hardly knew ye.... war is a traitor to the working man

  • Who is Responsible for this Fuck up. some Big shot.?

  • Was this Ned Kelly and his gangs song ???

    RESPECT from Scotland !!!

  • @BollockMcTesticles No Ned died before the lyrics were written.

  • WOW!!!!

  • Love this song...thank you :)

  • i'm Australian and just want to thank you for uploading a song about something that sadly too many people of my generation have already forgotten. This should be played every ANZAC day. To some people 'lest we forget' still counts for something.

  • When I first heard this song on a cd I had borrowed from the library only a week ago. It left me stunned! I wonderred why I had never heard it on the radio, even though I am an American. This ranks up there with our "Fortunate Son" by Credence Clearwater Revival as one of the best anti-war anthems. The former is full of rage, but the latter is so full of unbearable sadness as well as bitterness. The guy singing makes me feel that he is actually this war veteran telling me this story.

  • thanks a lot. very good. june tabor is impressing as well, but this one is even better, i think.

  • i just listened to other versions of this song, and they all turned out to be shite. just like with these great scottish and irish songs i had on the dropkick murphys CD, whenever you give someone with too much money or social status a mikrophone, the result is damaging to anyone with hearing ability...

  • Not the jolliest ditty but outstanding none the less...

  • support the soldiers not the war......what a better place the world would be without war

  • "I looked at the spot were my legs used to be".....war is terrible

  • The last Aussies shot were for murder Breaker Morant etc during the Boer War last time British Courts Martial ruled an Australian serviceman.WW1 only saw British French etc shot for desertion

  • Salutes the fallen and living

Wonderful song thanks for posting this x

  • Australia........i love to call this country my home!!!Im so proud to be a part of this nation!!

  • BEST VERSION OF THIS SONG BAR NONE...

  • As a Turk, I had no idea how much Gallipoli affected the Aussies...it was the Brits that sent then there, and they knew they didn't have a chance! War is a profit maker, it will always be around, and the handful of people that make these decisions do not care about the casualties...Sad but thats how it is

  • @ValsWay as sad as it is... but you are right... any way if there are people starved from australia or from turkey, every man is one man to much....

  • This is wonderful, whilst not being so.

    Wilfred Owen explained futility well.

Aussies and Kiwis, so far away from the issues, were obligated to join in, too.

ANZACs were, per capita, slain more than any other contingent.

    It wasn't me.

I was born during the Vietnam War.

There's another occasion to appreciate Wilfred Owen.

Regarding the future, for fuck's sake, please read Wilfred Owen's "Futility".

  • Splendid comment, friend.

  • The fact that they fought and died Landseker gave you the opportunity to say what you say and speak freely in your own language.

War is shit I agree but war is inevitable because human beings don't actually get on with each other very well!

A very touching song though and should bring tears to everyone's eyes

  • ya rite mate. this song makes remember how lucky i are. R.I.P Grandad.

  • the few that would stand and say no,,this is mine,,,

  • I'd like to know the meadls

  • I agree. This song should be enough to stop anyone going to war. Really good song, but some of the lyrics are wrong.

  • how

  • does it matter.

  • Good song, cheers for putting it up, it should be played to any poor sap who thinks of joining the army............... And you`ll never find the names of politicians amongst the dead of battle.. It is rare that generals die in wartime, and medals are scant comfort to the legless and cripples.

But then the profits of the arms trade are important.... or at least they are to the makers of arms....

Fuck war, and fuck the bastards who call and plan for more.

  • Trust me, I live in what used to be Yugoslavia. I know better than anyone how terrible the war is.

  • @landsker I thought the best skit on the generals of WW1 was done by Blackadder, series 4. Stephen Fry as the insane Gen. Melchett is telling Baldrick before he goes over the top 'Don't worry - we'll be behind you all the way!'

Cue Rowan Atkinson's Blackadder: 'Approximately 30 miles behind you...'

My great grandfather was poisoned in WW1, and died before the armistice. One sad tale among millions - the legacy of the arms race and war for so-called 'national prestige.'

  • @landsker i cant agree more, but what ya going to do? You know what they say...history repeats itself. I wish i had an answer!

  • @landsker 6 million Jews say you're wrong.

  • @landsker as Napoleon would have said: "a soldier will fight long and hard for a bit of coloured ribbon" (and yes im agreeing with you)

  • it's "show'r'd us with bullets" not "chased us with bullets" just fyi

  • It makes me cry. Im 38 x army. it makes me sad.

  • @andyparse with a tag like grunt 182820 go figure

  • Winston Churchill.War correspondent from the Boer War later to become the man who ordered Australians to Galiipoli.Through our loss we won glory and pride beyond time.We are Australians. And every loss makes us greater!

  • @longbody01

And they were all volunteers. It wouldn't happen nowadays.

  • they where far from volunteers,,,,most didnt even want shit to do with it,,,look up conscript,,

  • Australia never conscripted anyone in the 1st world war. They never shot any deserters either due to the fact that they were volunteers. Check out your history dude.

  • "were" - wrong, clown. That occured after Gallipoli.

  • The guys who "call the shots". Yeah

    greedy, power hungry pricks caused

"the armless, the legless, the blind

the insane". Young men in this and

other wars pay for power hungry

big shots for whom hell is too good..

  • i hear ya my friend.

  • I am with you there mate.

    I know personally the types.

Rotten brains and hearts by pride and petty of "class".I come from one of such families.

  • @JCPUTT

For King and Country, Yea Right

  • in 7 weary

  • Some of the lrycs are rong

  • dont matter my friend.

  • god bless their souls

  • "They shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them."

Always applied to the battlefields of the Western Front, but no less poignant here. This is a beautiful song, beautifully sung. The most powerful version not by an Australian, certainly.

  • here, here.

  • by far the best version of this song!

  • Few can lament like the Pogues

  • great song. My Grand father was at Gallipoli and latter at the western front.

His sentiments were the same as whats in this song and he never marched on ANZAC day as he thought it was too much a glorification of war. However the sacrifice that those yong men went thru will always be rembered

    lest we forget

  • This is a tremendous version of a wonderful song. I salute our ANZAC brothers who still remember what it takes to protect freedom.

  • I've loved this song for years and your slide show was really moving. The song always chokes me up, but the pictures added gives me a combination of anger, pride and loss. I'm pretty anti-war anyway, but the youth and innocence lost, and for what? Thanks!

  • brilliant, well edited...thanks

  • Beautiful - have no idea if Shane MacGowan is catholic or prod - But in WW1 PM Billy Hughes tried to intoduce conscription twice. The two groups that opposed were the Irish Catholics and the Diggers themselves. Those great men in the trenches were overwhelmingly opposed to conscription. Makes this song even more interesting in a strange way.

  • does anybody know what software you need to do this? It seems simple but i want to change the pictures to the music when i want to not every soy many seconds. would be great to find out, if anybody knows please let me know, thanks

  • Windows Movie Maker'd do it, I think

  • Great Song.

By the way, the lyrics you posted are the ones for the original song by Eric Bogle. So there are a few differences, and the end is not in this song. Anyway, nice slideshow.

  • im glad ya like it.

  • Another good one

  • Lyrics that should reach deep in anyone with feelings. Thanks for great posting.

  • An awesome video, majorsnag. The song is well done and you put it to great pictures. A brutal story of men trying their best to kill each other out of greed and prejudice. Peace.

    (Thanks for the share, Morthund!)

  • Ooopps, I meant the bloody Pogues. Its late and I hit my bloody head today.

  • hence ya "Bloody bloody head"

Yeah, and just to make sure I posted that bloody comment twice on your profile.

  • My bloody all-time favorite Pogoue songs.

    Amongst others.

The lyrics are etched into my brain.

  • Great video to a great song. Thanks for posting.

  • Great video!

BTW: If you are a Turk watching this, you should know that the Aussies honour the Turks as well.
