I am considering renting a motorcycle to go from Vientiane to the PDJ and then back to Vientiane in December of this year. Your video showed lots of dirt/mud road but in a recent show by Anthony Bourdain he said that that whole trip is now paved. Have you heard anything to confirm that? Also, if I rent a bike in Nong Khai, Thailand, am I apt to have any trouble taking it into Laos? thanx and vbr's, Alan

If I recall, the dirt/mud roads were just when we were taking "short cuts" or else when we did a trip down to a cave down in Southern Laos. I think the road to PDJ was completely paved, minus a few gravel spots they were working on. As for borders, I found Thailand to be more strict than Laos about taking a bike across, but my girlfriend was able to talk our way through (something about not having insurance...). I wouldn't expect any trouble coming the other way from Thailand.
