what perplexes me is this: most ancient civilizations did not have much communication with many others: sure egypt was in touch with greece, but for the most part they were keeping to themselves...so why do so many ancient civilizations depict orion's belt? What are the odds that the same exact 3 stars would be prominent in nearly every ancient civilization when they didnt contact one another?
You are in the right track. You can say that it is because Orion appears in both hemispheres and is very easy to distinguish. This is not amazing. What is really amazing is that it is almost in all cultures associated to birth of Stars or Gods. We think that the Nazca Monkey represents Orion. We may have technological advances now, but are we happy?
Our ancient people/ancestors didn't have all the smart phones, and other gizmos that we have today. They were much happier without it, and much more efficient. Shame on those who think our ancient people were dumb!
@honeykisses1987 Its impossible to make those striaght lines even today without a flying instrumant of some kind. Come on now, spiders and monkeys dont even exist in the desert, how did they even know about it??
@Cenasucks0161 Yeah, this is in Peru. Lots of monkeys and spiders in Peru. And, the lines are hardly straight... they look like drawings done by a 5 year old. It's completely possible to use a little trig to figure out how to do this. I just don't get... can't explain it, must have been aliens. It's like, God of the Gaps inside out.
@HillChris1234 Facepalm* Monkeys and spiders dont live in a desert retard. And even if they were able to draw the lines, how the hell were they able to know if the drawings were proportionate? Its impossible to know from a horizontal distance.
@Cenasucks0161 There are spiders and monkeys living in areas NEEEEAAAARRRRRRRR the fucking desert. It is totally possible to use a little bit of calculus and trig to make a complex drawing just knowing when and how to manipulate the untensil... without being able to see the entire picture. Besides, if they COULD see the entire figure, the drawings probably wouldn't look like they were drawn by 5-year olds.
LOL. Good answer. The website GeekGlyph gives and explanation about all the spiders, monkey, plants, fishes and shapes (you can see them all in Google Earth). Do not forget to visit.
@honeykisses1987 Yes, I think we are. I think I'd much rather live in a world with electricity, the internet, central air and modern medicine. Sure beats scurvy and a 40-year life expectancy. Especially considering that these figures were probably drawn by slaves.
the animal drawings were quite literal. so what was the alien-looking drawing a literal interpretation of? either an alien, soldier or religious figure?
I saw the lines in 1970 when I was travelling around S. America and I'll never forget the feeling I had when standing in the Atacama desert amongst the myriad of lines. It really was quite supernatural and absolutely spectacular. There's definitely something out-of-this-world about them.
The most idiotic of all the theories proposed is von Däniken's claim that the lines are ancient runway strips for UFOs. Even Maria Reiche laughed at this notion. The earth of the plateau is extremely soft so the spaceships would have gotten stuck in the mud! Seriously though, the early Americans were brilliant mathematicians and engineers - it's very possible that they could have surveyed the areas to accurately produce the images and lines.
Ha ha! No, I think it's unfair to assume that ancient people (to us) lacked the skill to build gigantic monuments without the assistance of aliens. I mean, there were Einsteins in those days too. They just lacked our technical equipment,
However, I like the theory of "walking in the deity" best. It seems feasible to me.
Also, "John Denver" at the end has some good points.

@Cenasucks0161 It isn't the Sahara, it's Peru. There is a VAST habitat of spiders and monkeys in Peru.

maybe they weren't as limited, tool and mind wise
as we think they are, i think it's naive or ignorant
of us today that they might have been dumb and
incapable.

If you just walk on the line, why bother making it a complex shape?
