the melvins may have put about 50 albums since 1990, but there is nothing unforgettable (or even memorable) in their catalog. they're not bad, but it's not the sort of music you ever put on at a party or bar mitzvah.
@bongobill635 Depends on who you ask, the Melvins are a constant in the music scene and have done their own thing as well as take popular sounds and twist them to death. 99.9% of Heavy music isn't party music.
@bongobill635 Are you serious?, Heavy Metal music and its subgenres and mix genres aren't the type of music you'd use in a party or any other festivity. Melvins are Sludge Metal, and they're pretty original, they've done their own thing always and they've experimented a lot during time. Melvins was formed in 1983 and they've put up 20 Studio albums If I'm not wrong. Their most memorable albums, if we go for popularity, the ones with Atlantic Records, Houdini, Stoner Witch and Stag...
@thehackman888 The Melvins helped form the grunge sound, before Nirvana and Alice In Chains were in it (HELPED shape the sound, they didn't shape it on their own obviously...) and SUPPOSEDLY, Buzz was the one that brought drop-D Tuning to the grunge movement, leaking it to the other genres (i say Supposedly... because that's what Metal Evolution was saying...) (and i'm not arguing anything you said, i'm just stating something)
@SalientBen You mean the guys in the Melvins have never been to "real" parties but YOU have? You sound like a 14-year old schmuck who thinks he has "swag". You're a jackass of the highest order. Real parties lol, schmuck.
@TouchPeelStandMan You mean that Alice and Nirvana were a mix of this. The Melvins have been around alot longer than either of them. Kurt used to muck about with Buzzoand the guys when they did shows before he formed Nirvana. Always wanted to be their roadie, but they said he couldn't haul equipment because he was too spindly.
@TouchPeelStandMan Mix of Nirvana and Alice in Chains ? hahahahaha ... Stop to listen your '' biggest 90's grunge scene bands '' , and listen THE MELVINS.
In the sense that grunge was local seattle movement between friend's bands playing heavily distorted music that was a sort of cross between classic rock and punk. this is very much grunge.
@chippy20202 you might be right about ur definition of the so-called trendy "grunge"..but just because they inspired that shit doesn't mean they were part of it...they did took advantage of that mainstream trend, but they inspired it (which is a completely different thing).. along with other talented bands who got tagged as "grunge" ....to me this is fucking SLUDGE at its finest.. deal with it
@nick0is0ace - You and granntatta are right for the mist part. But it is my belief that The Melvins wouldn't have existed without the influence of FLIPPER. The Melvins have also covered several of their songs as well. Great stuff!
@MarionBarryIsDumb like all music genres you can keep pulling it further back. You could say the same with the likes of Meat Puppets, REM, Black Flag, Pixies etc. All though these bands influenced the grunge movement they weren't grunge bands. The thing with the seattle movement was that the bands within the scene (i.e. melvins, tad , green river etc) all influenced each other becasue there was so little outside influences. It stayed within a tight circle as it evolved.
I think some of you need a history lesson. The Melvins are pretty much the founders of grunge. If you watch Metal Evolution's episode on Grunge, Buzzo is on there alot. The took punk, like Black Flag, and slowed it down. They influenced Niravana and countless other grunge bands. They are also in Mark Yarm's book about the history of Grunge titled "Everybody Loves Our Town". If you want to find the true meaning of grunge, you needed to dig deeper than the stuff they played on the radio.
@grannytatts your wrong becouse buzz and kurt cobain where highschool friends and they started the band focal matter together. that is as proove that they started at the same time. buzz osborne not created grunge but inspired kurt
@luitenant22 Where did you get your information? Buzz and Kurt knew each other but never played in a band together. Can you cite me a source so I can go verify it for myself? Here's a direct quote from Tracy Simmons, bassist for Blood Circus, "The Melvins were the band that inspired the grunge sound more than anybody.".
@grannytatts Your totaly right dude, The true pioneers of the grunge movement/seattle sound where: Melvins, Green River (who later split to form Mudhoney and Mother Love bone), Tad, Soundgarden and a few others. The later bands like nirvana, AIC, Pearl Jam etc had a much more poliched/commercial sound, as apposed to the true GRUNDGY sounding bands which came before them.
@nick0is0ace Thank you! I'm glad that somebody else understands that there was so much more to grunge and the "Seattle Sound" than Kurt Cobain! He was a great talent but far from being the only one!
@grannytatts Haha, i know dude. It makes my bood boil when i hear or read people saying that grunge began in 1991 (cos thats when Nevermind & Ten were released). The truth is that Green River and The Melvins where performing in the early 80's. In fact Mark Arm from Green River and Mudmoney first used the word "Grunge" in 81 discribing his first band "Mr Epp". Then in the late 80's the like of Soundgarden and Tad came along an turned grunge from a styl to an entire scene/movement.
@dragonstylekungfu Sorry for the confusion, mac. I meant that, because of the geograpic proximity to the cultural blight known as grunge, the Melvins actually make up for it. The way JS Bach more than made up for the worst organ/harpsichord music of the time. The only thing grungy about these guys may be the bottoms of their shoes. Too out-there for doom(and gloom), too out-there for stoner (though closer to lsd-25 than most), the Melvins are a hideous mutant freak. Onward!
@genreslur Grunge is not a cultural blight. It's near and ear to a lot of uour hearts. POST-grunge, which is shit cleaned up for radio-friendly crap, IS a blight. Get it right.
I just got back from the hospital and I was diagnosed with Minor Schizophrenia, so I just came to the computer to listen to this to calm me down. I'M FREAKING OUT.

@Peppepoppldoppl you don't know nothing about Brazil. It's an awful country, full of idiotic slaves that are manipulated by the television networks. However, the "toilet flushed down with drugs" that you're refering to is called Rio de Janeiro, and it doesn't represents 1% of the extension of this country. Brazil really sucks, but you're ridiculous.
@Mafagafon Brazil doesn't suck at all, the problem is that it's filled with numbnuts who disrespect it's culture and don't fight for the country they live in.
The only thing worse than being buried in shit is not fighting to get out of it man.
@Peppepoppldoppl You're currently listening to Cobain's favorite band. He used to "roadie" for them...Doesn't mean you must like nirvana, of course. Just an fyi. It's still a free country until Obama gets reelected.
@ChaChaHancho The bad music and mess of lyrics overall. Also they are seemingly emotionless and all they ever had was the looks of Cobain as a rock anti hero.
@avend666 There's a lot of emotion in it though. There just aren't a lot of people that can hear it. I appreciate them as musicians, it's good music. You guys are nuts.

what's the name of the melvins song that has a music video where they play in a barn or someshit, with pigs or goats. I watched that a couple of years ago and can't find it now
Why do people find it necessary to fucking argue about Nirvana and Kurt on a goddamn Melvins video? Two different groups people, yes Kurt was influenced by Buzz and Co. But seriously what artist hasn't been inspired by another?
It's great that Melvins get more attention then they would if Nirvana hasn't been that famous. But that is just a bonus. I didn't discover Melvins because of Nirvana, that happened seperately. So, for me, they don't exist in anyone's shadow at all, they got their own universe. And they destroy and rebuild it whenever they want. And I like that.
Thank you Kurt Cobain for writing about this band<3

Nirvana SUCKS
QingLong90 3 months ago
@QingLong90 how can you be listening to Melvins and hate Nirvana? weird.
BriweCZ 3 months ago
@ChaChaHancho The bad music and mess of lyrics overall. Also they are seemingly emotionless and all they ever had was the looks of Cobain as a rock anti hero.
avend666 3 months ago
@avend666 There's a lot of emotion in it though. There just aren't a lot of people that can hear it. I appreciate them as musicians, it's good music. You guys are nuts.

@Peppepoppldoppl You suck.

Why do people find it necessary to fucking argue about Nirvana and Kurt on a goddamn Melvins video? Two different groups people, yes Kurt was influenced by Buzz and Co. But seriously what artist hasn't been inspired by another?

@darthmechis
