  • I don't think it is wise to just run to your opponent.. I would rather seek mensura and then attack with lungo... no need to strike from that distance. Opponent has plenty of time to make scanso de la vita, or perry and strike in your huge tempo

  • @kajaba Every technique has its weaknesses. This pass down the inside line provides a more powerful thrust and closes the distance to ensure you aren't struck with an afterblow. This is a principal often forgotten in fencing, that a struck opponent is not immediately finished. This principal is much like Fabris' running up to the hilt. When done right this is a very fast technique that has a lot in its favour.

  • Nikko, am I wrong to assume your rear foot is in a specific stance as it is pointing slightly backward. This contra the rear foot pointing slightly forward?

  • @777snoons The rear foot facing slightly backwards is a characteristic of Capo Ferro. It is not an absolute rule, but a preferance. What you will find is that in a fairly upright posture or backweighted (as Capo Ferro is so commonly associated), twisting the rear foot slightly backward allows the rear knee to bend comfortably in guard, and allows for a comfortable lunge.

  • This is so interesting. I wish I could study historical fencing / western martial art here in Canada! ;) It looks like a lot of fun. Thanks for the video.

  • @Queensthief195 Thanks. There are groups in Canada, I visited Academie Duello a couple of years ago in Vancouver, I know there is also one in Toronto, I suppose it depends where you are, its a big country! Otherwise, start your own study group and get going, which is the way all of these groups have formed.

  • I really like the slow motion. That is quite innovative.

  • Again, thanks a lot for this, mate.

  • ..

    hmm..

i prefer to pass on the outside when i use a quart.

specially when the oponent has a dagger in his left arm..

    .

    great videos..

    .

    cu in vienna ..

    .

  • That is doable, but you are then passing with the false edge in to their blade, which is already weaker, and being even more vulnerable to their dagger if they have one, as your blade is stuck on the outside, unable to defend from his dagger.

Striking in quarta on the outside is generally very dangerous, as doing it with a safe line of engagement if very tough, Capo Ferro plate 24 is one example, but utlilises the dagger to do so. Definately see you in Vienna.

  • I think the two rapier lesson vids are excellent.. It's great to see this kind of thing, because so many of us rapier students don't have clubs or instructors (or in a lot of cases even a regular training partner). I'm working through Tom Leoni's translation of Fabris and find it a very comprehensive sytem what are your views? I think it complements Capofero really well. Thanks for the vids, please keep them coming.

  • Thanks! Nice to see they are doing the job intended. I hav Tom's book on Fabris (and pretty much every book written on the subject then and now), it is an excellent peice of work.

However, I have never got on particularly well with Fabris' work, though I am including little bits here and there in my classes for flavour, I still use Capo Ferro for almost everything, it has just always appealed to me on so many levels, nothing wrong with drawing from different sources though.

  • thanks Nick, here's a practical question; what make of rapier are you using? the blades look quite firm but flexible enough to be comfortable when recieving a hit. I have a Hanwei practical rapier, which I find ok.

  • In this video I am using a Darkwood Armory Single Recurved Quillon 42" Practice rapier, my opponent a Hanwei Practical 43", but with a much heavier pommel. These are the two most common in our club.

The Darkwoods are excellent but too expensive for many, the Hanweis are a bit too flexible, but for the money they are excellent, a heavier pommel makes them better again, we use Hanwei sidesword pommels to sort the problem which any retailer will order in for you.

  • Also, I forgot to mention, I am planning to do a video shortly on this subject, outlining all of the training weapons and equipment we use and why, as I get questions about all of it constantly.

  • Thanks for that info Nick, I didn't know you could order Hanwei sidesword pommels seperately.. that would improve the balance of their practical rapier no end, especially with the 43" blade. I think your latest video's are great (as usual). Have you thought of producing a DVD?

  • Yep, I figured out you could get suppliers to order parts seperately, the pommels cost just under 20 euros or so.

Thank you very much, I have thought about a DVD, but this way will get to so many more people, it is too specialist a subject to make serious money on, and by this time next year I will have 8.5 hours of lessons on youtube, rather better than a DVD or two.

I will discuss the reasons more for this on my website artofrapier soon enough, but aditionally exposure for our art is useful.

  • That sounds sensible, youtube is an ideal medium to get exposure of Hisorical Martial arts to a much wider audience than a specialist DVD.. I'm already favouriting all your lessons, so by this time next year I should have the whole eight and a half hours.. Haha.

  • These are going to be really useful Nick, eagerly await more from you and Mike :)

  • Great! please keep them coming! I am only 30miles from your club but still can't get there so this is as close a substitute as I can find!

  • Thanks, where are you based?

  • I live in Bath and work in Bristol. Unfortunately I don't have a car and your venues are not easy to get to and back with public transport

  • Ah that is a shame, we based our Bristol locations on the road networks certainly. You may want to register on our club forum and ask around about other people that travel to the club, as we have people that come from all over, you may be able to arrange something.

  • Many thanks, this lesson was cool!

  • Thanks!!!
