So many good comments that I agree with. Great band, song and no doubt, the signature voice of rock for me, John Kay. Also, check out the great drumming by Jerry Edmonton, laying it down. He was a very under appreciated drummer. One of the best.

My friends and I were young (14 yrs. old) burnouts when we'd listen to Steppenwolf constantly. Slow Flux, Live, #7, #2 were huge with us in South Amityville, NY in 1974. You have to love John Kay!!!!
I would say that this is one of my favorite tracks on "7". This was the first recording with new bass player George Biondo. All members involved really showed off their tallents on this album. One of the best Steppenwolf recordings ever. They performed Hippo Stomp and I believe Snow Blind Friend on a PBS show call Album of the month. It was an awesome performance. Steppenwolf was serving notice that they were heading into the 1970's just as bad as ever.with no let up. Sure wish I had the video.
STEP 7...soundtrack of my H.S. years... this album was special ! This, Renegade and Snowblind Friend are outstanding cuts on this classic. No one can growl out lyrics quite like John Kay.
I was born in 1962 and Steppenwolf Monster was the first LP I bought with my own money (as a, what, 8 year old?.) But this was always my favorite, song for song. Not a bad track on it. And this was my favorite of them all. Melody, lyrics, weird funky rhythmic guitar, harmonica, and that burning lead. And I always liked that John Kay and I shared an April 12th bday. Thanks for posting this WITH the original album art!
looking for someone who has the first album with the 27 minute long version of the Pusher on one whole side , man I got to hear that , here in Roswell, smoking my homegrown cronic
Watch where your curser is when a song auto changes, my curser was on flag & when the song ended, a bink boink sound came on, like as if I clicked on it?? I hope I didn't flag this, "cause' I dint do it yer honor!"
This band was the impetus for my learning to play guitar, (especially when I learned the chords to BTBW were to similar to Purple Haze), and as I grew older and began to peruse the lyrics more closely, Steppenwolf became the musical background for much of my 20's (in the 80's!). So I hear this and it sends chills through my core being for days long past. They truly are an unsung quantity in the olf R&R world, my unsung heroes I grew up with. And I'm sure I'm not the only one.
@andora63 I put this music on, & play along w/ it on my guitar. LOVE it! Rythems are real cool. Have a bit of problem w/ leads, but then again, I play by ear,[ never had a lesson ] I get some of them. Music w/ some balls! in my opinion.
I still say that it is the rhythm guitar (Larry Byrom?) and the variations of strumming techniques used throughout the song, that makes this such a great song (along with Kay's voice, and the way the song "moves").
I still say that it is the rhythm guitar (Larry Byrom?) and the variations of strumming techniques used throughout the song, that makes this such a great song (along with Kay's voice, and the way the song "moves"). The guitar work on this song is phenomenal.
i never had saw this album for sale in record stores. i only heard a scratched hand off that was given to me by a friend.better than never hearing it at all
Very obscure and random thing here: I bought this album when I was 14 years old when it was first released in 1970, and each time I hear this song I imagine taking a train ride across the desert. No, it's not chemically induced, then or now. BTW, I think I still have that album in my basement somewhere.
Check out Steppenwolf Screaming Night Hog 'GTK' or some three letters like that, a back and white video of them in the studio playing 'along' to the recording. Check John's perfect falceto on 'screams' at 1:58. You will watch this video many times and get what you need. Peace, EC. DFW TX USA
@Jimed756 I've been collecting albums since my first one, Out of Our Heads by The Rolling Stones in 1964. Steppenwolf is one fine band. My favorite is For Ladies Only, but 7 ranks a close second. Hell, there all good. I love a lead singer who really stands out. When you hear John Kay you know right away who it is. Great voice, great band. I'm 56 now and I'M FEEL SO LUCKY TO HAVE GROWN UP IN THE 60'S & 70'S with this fantastic music!!
@bytusr88 Hey, thanks. I remember the first time I heard Ball Crusher on 7, the guitar riff at the begining blew me away. That may be my favorite song on this album, but Snowblind Friend written by Hoyt Axton is an amazing song, and John Kay made it so memorable with his voice. Steppenwolf will always be one of my favorite bands. Oh, I'm logged on as Mr. 427 cammer today. I have two ID's.
