O'Bannon was being accepted as a student at the USC Department of Cinema, he met John Carpenter, with the two collaborating in their later student years to create Dark Star.
O'Bannon said: A lot of things bothered me with Dark Star. We had an alien in it, which was a beach ball ... I went away from Dark Star knowing I wanting to do an alien that looked real .
